Here's An Everyday Hero For You

"I am convinced that the greatest heroes are those who do their duty in the daily grind of domestic affairs." (Florence Nightingale)

You want to see one such hero? Here's Mike, an SEIU member who dares to speak publicly about his union's improper practice of requiring dues from him that are then used to support political and ideological things he vehemently opposes.

Note how the reporter naturally assumes that the union will, contrary to Mike's constitutional freedoms of speech and conscience, retaliate against him. That's what Big Labor has come to -- unfairness, arrogance and mean-spirited coercion.

She knows it. You and I know it too. And so does Mike.

But he speaks out for what's right anyhow.

I'd suggest we pray for him and his family, asking God to protect them and bless them. And let him be an inspiration to all of us to speak up for what's right too...no matter what it may cost. (Hat tip to Health Care BS and Blogs Lucianne Loves.)

What's Behind Global Warming Mania? Politics and Money.

Harold Lewis is Emeritus Professor of Physics, University of California, Santa Barbara, former Chairman; Former member Defense Science Board, Chairman of Technology panel; Chairman DSB study on Nuclear Winter; Former member Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards; Former member, President’s Nuclear Safety Oversight Committee; Chairman APS study on Nuclear Reactor Safety Chairman Risk Assessment Review Group; Co-founder and former Chairman of JASON; Former member USAF Scientific Advisory Board; author...and much more.

But he has just resigned from the American Physical Society.

Why? Because he so adamantly opposes the ongoing contortions of the APS to fit science into a politically-correct ideology of global warming.

You gotta' read his eloquent letter of resignation. James Delingpole over at the Telegraph prints the whole thing. (Unlike the American media, there remains some sense of journalistic integrity on the other side of the Pond.) But here are a couple of excerpts to tease you over there.

...How different it is now. The giants no longer walk the earth, and the money flood has become the raison d’ĂȘtre of much physics research, the vital sustenance of much more, and it provides the support for untold numbers of professional jobs. For reasons that will soon become clear my former pride at being an APS Fellow all these years has been turned into shame, and I am forced, with no pleasure at all, to offer you my resignation from the Society.

It is of course, the global warming scam, with the (literally) trillions of dollars driving it, that has corrupted so many scientists, and has carried APS before it like a rogue wave. It is the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist...

So what has the APS, as an organization, done in the face of this challenge? It has accepted the corruption as the norm, and gone along with it...

APS management has gamed the problem from the beginning, to suppress serious conversation about the merits of the climate change claims. Do you wonder that I have lost confidence in the organization?

I do feel the need to add one note, and this is conjecture, since it is always risky to discuss other people’s motives. This scheming at APS HQ is so bizarre that there cannot be a simple explanation for it. Some have held that the physicists of today are not as smart as they used to be, but I don’t think that is an issue. I think it is the money, exactly what Eisenhower warned about a half-century ago. There are indeed trillions of dollars involved, to say nothing of the fame and glory (and frequent trips to exotic islands) that go with being a member of the club...

I want no part of it, so please accept my resignation...

Public School System Inserts Islamic Holiday Into The Calendar

As the public schools veer further away from any recognition (let alone respect) of America's Christian heritage, they move steadily towards a friendly relationship with other religions. Buddhism gets applause as does Hinduism and the pantheistic renderings of pre-Christian native religions.

And then there's Islam.

Not content merely to slant textbooks or to take kids on field trips to mosques where they are indoctrinated into the way of Islam, some school systems are considering inserting a Muslim religious holiday into the calendar. Yes, while Easter and Christmas holiday breaks must be re-named to the seasons (some are trying to remove them altogether), the progressives are embracing the coercive, harsh, fiercely intolerant, woman-subjugating religion of Islam.

A case in point. In Cambridge, Massachusetts next year, the schools will close for either Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha, depending on which holiday falls within the school year. And you can bet that each grade level in school will be getting a heady dose of what that day signifies. Tutorials on Islam. Special readings. Special speakers. Re-enactments of ritual.

All will be cool.

But let a music instructor let a Christmas carol slip into the school assembly?

Forget about it.

Alveda King on the Komen/Planned Parenthood Connection

I went to Kroger this weekend and as I was checking out through the self-checkout lane, I noticed a sticker on the register that read, “Susan G. Komen for the Cure”. I called the attendant over and asked her what the sticker was for. She very proudly said, “We’re collecting money for them to find a cure for breast cancer.”

So I then began to tell her that Susan G. Komen for the Cure donates millions of money to Planned Parenthood. I then asked her if she knew who Planned Parenthood was. She said that she didn’t. I then explained to her that Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of abortions in the United States and that here is a link between abortion and breast cancer.

I said, “Isn’t it funny that Susan G. Komen for the Cure is raising money to find a cure for breast cancer while at the same time giving millions of dollars to an organization that performs abortions on women and provides birth control both of which have been linked to breast cancer.” She said, “I didn’t know that.”

I bet next time someone asks her about that sticker, she won’t be so proud that they are collecting money to find a cure for breast cancer or at least share more with the shopper.

What a scheme. Planned Parenthood does abortions and provide birth control pills which are linked to breast cancer and then Susan G. Komen for the Cure raises money to give to Planned Parenthood to do mammograms. They make you sick then raise money to treat you and then butcher you with breast surgery. Does anyone see anything wrong with this picture?

Mattel Toys: Paranoid, Grubby and Heartless

As the Christmas shopping season approaches, please keep in mind this heartless action of Mattel Toy Company. In their greedy paranoia, they sued Super Duper Publications, a provider of educational materials for children with autism and other communication disorders, for infringement of copyright. Why?

Because SDP used the words "Say" and "And Say" in some of its product lines. And that, Mattel argued, infringed upon two of the Mattel's toys, "See 'N Say" and "The Farmer Says."

But if Mattel demanding a monopoly on the word "say" isn't outrageous enough, consider that they convinced 4 numskull judges (trial court judge Henry Floyd and then U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals judges Dennis Shedd, G. Steven Agee, and Clyde Hamilton) to go along with this madness.

Furthermore, the ruling not only requires SDP to cease and desist "saying" the word "say;" SDP must 1) pay Mattel a million dollars, 2) pay nearly $2.7 million of Mattel's legal fees, and 3) destroy all of the SAY materials and advertising. That in itself will cost over a half million dollars.

Nonsense triumphs? Of course it does. But so does Waste and Meanness. For Mattel insists (and the judges agree) that these materials cannot be given away to kids with special needs. The materials must be destroyed.

It seems that the spirit, not of Santa Claus, but of the pre-repentant Ebeneezer Scrooge lives on in the Mattel Company.

"I believe it is a tragedy that Mattel brought this action against us and that the Courts have concluded that we must destroy our SAY special needs materials," said Thomas Webber, CEO of Super Duper. "We wanted to at least be able to donate these items to charity so children with autism and others who desperately need speech and language therapy products could benefit from using them. But Mattel and the Courts did not provide for this option in their orders..."

Sharon Webber, a speech-language pathologist, created Super Duper's first SAY workbook in 1987 to help children with speech articulation problems say their R sound correctly. Over the years, Super Duper developed 15 lines of different SAY products like FOLD AND SAY articulation and language books, FISH AND SAY speech and language floor games, and SEE IT SAY IT flip book for children with severe speech problems known as apraxia.

Super Duper registered these SAY trade names with the full approval of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. No one objected to these names until 2004, when Mattel opposed Super Duper's filing of a trademark application for the name SORT AND SAY on a line of magnetic educational board games.

Today, Super Duper provides children with autism and others with over 900 unique special needs educational items. It also has over 100 employees...

Mr. Webber contends, "The issue in a trademark infringement case is whether or not consumers are likely to be confused between who makes and sells a product. In my opinion, there is virtually no evidence to support the finding that consumers would likely to be confused between our SAY educational materials and Mattel's SAY toys. NO ONE has EVER been confused between our products over the 23 years we have been in business. Plus, our special needs educational materials are NOTHING like Mattel's toys."

"We also disagreed with the court that we had diluted Mattel's trade names. The judges ruled the trade names SEE 'N SAY and THE FARMER SAYS were "famous" under dilution law. Everyone knows BARBIE is famous, but I don't think one person in a hundred can tell you what the SEE 'N SAY or THE FARMERS SAYS toys are."

Once again, a huge company which outsources most of its work to foreign nations, is assisted by the U.S. courts to severely damage an American business. And on the most ludicrous of legal arguments.

Super Duper Publications, is, by the way, appealing this most unjust decision. It's very existence as a company could be at stake.

In the meantime, however, Mattel should definitely be crossed off your Christmas list. Buy your kids and grandkids something from another company. And consider sending the company a Christmas card letting them know they made the "Naughty" list. (Mattel, Inc., 333 Continental Boulevard, El Segundo, CA 90245-5012)

Oh yes. One more item from this story has special relevance to the voters of South Carolina. For Mattel's lead attorney in this monstrous action is one Frank Holleman, the Democrat candidate for South Carolina Superintendent of Education.

New York City Council Shills for Abortionists

The New York City Council is the latest government body going bonkers in its abortion advocacy as they propose legislation against pro-life pregnancy centers. The City Council thus serves (quite openly, even proudly) as the handmaiden to NARAL and the abortion profiteers in the city.

The new rules would require the pro-life CPCs to post on their walls, their brochures and their websites that they do not perform abortions. Such rules are, of course, are unconstitutional as well as unfair. What other businesses are required to advertise what they do not provide?

Indeed, in the case of Planned Parenthood and other abortionists, there have been numerous revelations of their lies to clients (Lila Rose and her team have a shelf full of videotapes) and of deliberate obfuscation of intensely relevant information -- not revealing to their clients the scientific findings of fetal development, fetal pain, post-abortion trauma, severe complications for the mother's health following the abortion, and so on.

Where is the City Council in correcting those terrible abuses of women's trust?

The Wall Street Journal reports:

To demonstrate support for the legislation, NARAL Pro-Choice New York Foundation and the National Institute for Reproductive Health, organizations that support abortion rights, will release Tuesday a report exposing what they call the "lies, manipulations and privacy violations" of these centers.

The groups sent women pretending to be pregnant to the centers, and they received misinformation and experienced scare tactics, the report says. At one center in Queens, a woman was falsely told abortion could cause breast cancer, and there was literature there asking, "Is it really necessary to kill your baby?" the report says.

NARAL thinks it has some kind of coup because they report that a CPC counselor refers to the breast cancer/abortion link. So do many scientists in the field. And NARAL is shocked that a CPC counselor refers to abortion as killing a baby and asks about other ways in which the CPC can help the woman avoid such a terrible sin. That's truth coupled with mercy. That's what is called genuine ministry. And CPC's do this every day -- prayerfully, conscientiously and completely free of charge.

No wonder the likes of NARAL and Planned Parenthood can't understand them.

Indeed, NARAL's thrill in their "discoveries" only emphasizes the underhanded, sleazy tactics of the abortion centers; that is, Planned Parenthood and its ilk do everything they can to ignore the truth that a real, live human baby is killed in every abortion AND that they do not counsel the client about any other alternatives except that baby's extermination.

No, it is the abortionists who are guilty of dealing in lies and deception. It is the abortionists who are pulling down huge profits from peddling abortion. And it is the abortionists who should be subject to the strict scrutiny of government.

And that, of course, would be the case in a saner, more humane America.

Pray for justice. Pray for the pro-life CPCs under attack by the evil one. And pray that the sinister thugs of NARAL and Planned Parenthood don't end pulling your City Council by the nose like they are here in NYC.

Heroes!

In case you missed it last week, here's a little inspiration for your weekend.

A Weekend Gig for "When Swing Was King"

Normally, Claire and I do our "When Swing Was King" presentations on weekdays. That's when there's more of a need in nursing homes, assisted living apartments and retirement centers for entertainment, projects and outside visitation.

But tomorrow (Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock, to be exact) we're introducing the program to a brand new audience. Would you like to join up with us and see what the excitement is all about? Zip us an e-mail at vitalsigns@vitalsignsministries if you're interested. The residents would love to meet you and Claire and I would be delighted to have you along.

By the way, if you don't yet know what "When Swing Was King" is all about, check out any of our previous posts about this new outreach...like, maybe, this one, "When Swing Was King" Invites You Along.

Nebraska AG Jon Bruning Responds

I've written three or four posts in the past few months dealing with my hopes that Nebraska's Attorney General Jon Bruning would answer a few of the questions directed at him from pro-life advocates and that he would take a more aggressive, more public leadership role to ensure that every possible action is being taken in Nebraska to defend and promote the sanctity of life, to protect women's health and safety, to require abortionists like Leroy Carhart and Planned Parenthood to fully adhere to current law, to keep such atrocious schemes as Planned Parenthood's "telemed" abortion procedures out of Nebraska, and to investigate new areas in which pro-life legislation can chip away at Roe v Wade.

Yesterday the Attorney General called and we had a friendly and, I hope, fruitful conversation about these important matters. I thank Mr. Bruning for his time and for answering specific questions I had about the investigation of Leroy Carhart over charges leveled by former employees, about the recent actions of AGs in Texas and Virginia, and about the Nebraska Health Department's investigative procedures.

I applaud him Mr. Bruning for outspoken pro-life convictions to date. And I appreciate his promise to look carefully into a couple of the other matters we spoke about. Thanks, Jon.

It's the 11th Hour

The wacky season is at its worst as the Democrats duck and dodge, pontificate and prevaricate, and engage in some of their most outrageous character assassinations ever.

* An audio tape has surfaced of an aide to Attorney General Jerry Brown referring to Meg Whitman, his rival in California governor's race as "a whore." And Brown is heard saying, “Well, I’m going to use that." Excuse me, where is the feminist uproar?

* Joe Biden's lies about the administration's economic performance wasn't thrilling the crowd -- even though the crowd was composed of Democrats who had come to give money. So what does the arrogant Vice-Preseident do? He blames them for his boring performance. “You’re the dullest audience I’ve ever spoken to."

* Democrat Congressman Alan Grayson has compared Republicans to "Nazis," likened Dick Cheney to a vampire, stated that Rush Limbaugh was "more lucid when he was a drug addict" and is now running an ad which maliciously distorts his opponent Dan Webster's religious beliefs and calls him "Taliban Dan Webster."

* The list goes on. Democrats are desperate to get some of the votes they've lost due to their own incompetence, arrogance, overspending and lack of transparency. So, it's back to the usual tactics of 11th-hour attacks (revved up a few notches) in which the other side doesn't have time to fully counter and which no court requires an ultimate payment.

Susan G. Komen Gives to Planned Parenthood?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and there's no doubt all Americans should be concerned about this devastating disease. We should, for instance, be bold enough to tell our fellow citizens some of the critical facts being left out of the discussion -- issues surrounding the connections of surgical (and chemical) abortion to greater risks of breast cancer and the demonstrable decrease in contracting the disease among women who have had children in their twenties and women who have breast-fed their children.

And among other uncomfortable facts NOT being discussed is the connection of the Susan G. Komen Foundation (that most ubiquitous of breast cancer research organizations) to Planned Parenthood, the mega-rich business that kills more preborn babies every year than any other abortion chain.

So, do you want to just go along with the flow? Or would you like to act upon the best and most comprehensive data, keeping not only a clear conscience but putting your efforts where they can truly do the most good? Then please read this enlightening, encouraging blog post from Barb Malek, veteran pro-life activist and CPC champion. In it she explains why she doesn't give to the Komen group, what research organizations she does recommend, and what crucial facts she wants every woman to know about breast cancer.

Welcome to Barack Obama's "Stimulus Follies"

While efficiency experts across the country are giggling at the ironic fumbling of the the American Postal Workers Union -- they have had to extend their union election because thousands of ballots were claimed to have been lost in the mail -- those same efficiency experts are gasping at the federal government paying out $18 million of the President's stimulus to 72,000 dead people.

But not to worry says the Social Security Administration. About half of that money has been returned. And to Washington bureaucrats, losing $9,000,000 to criminals is just chump change.

In fact, the SSA is so generous to criminals that an additional $4.3 million of that stimulus cash went out to some 17,000 prison inmates.

But are all the stories of the Democrats' stimulus spending a bad (though very expensive) joke? Of course not. For instance, out in Palm Springs, the Democrat mayor Steve Pougnet, is crediting the President's stimulus gifts as saving the city from a “major, major depression.”

True, the once-luxurious tourist destination remains a pitiful version of its former self. It's run down, plagued by fleeing businesses, empty buildings and a 14% unemployment rate. But the stimulus package gave Palm Springs $1.37 million dollars for a park with fancy lighting and two Bocce ball greens.

The net employment gain? 20. And some of those will not be permanent.

So how does this save Palm Springs? It doesn't. But to Mayor Pougnet, an open homosexual who is now running for Congress and has nothing but a lousy record to boast of, he's desperate to cook up some kind of enthusiasm for his campaign. So what else but to go "old school" Democrat; that is, brag about being in such sad shape that you need money from the public trough to survive. And then waste that survival money on projects that serve just a few folks and which generates no sustainable revenue.

And finally, one more delicious item showing the Obama administration handing out your money for things you definitely do not want. In this case, $700,000 is going from your pockets through the National Science Foundation to a New York theater company. For what? The NSF commissioned the thespians to come up with a musical touting the need for America to act against climate change. Thinking Al Gore in a top hat? No, this one stars a lovely photojournalist working in the rain forests of Panama with all of the music, dancing, and propaganda that you'd expect.

Your money doled out to the dead. To prison inmates. To Bocce ball greens. To agitprop toe-dancers.

Feeling stimulated yet?

ACLU Gets "Pierced" By Religion

Yes, I know that you're used to hearing about the ACLU stepping in to stop the exercise of religious expression in the public square. They don't like prayers at football games. They're horrified by plaques with the Ten Commandments. They are aghast at lighted crosses (even in people's yards), at teachers who have Bibles on their desk or speakers who dare to mention religious faith in a school assembly.

But here's a case where the ACLU is defending the public expression of a high school student's religion!

It involves a North Carolina high school which observes the county's dress code prohibiting fashion statements deemed distracting or disruptive. These include droopy pants, short skirts, "abnormal hair color" and facial piercings.

Thus enters the ACLU to defend 14-year-old Ariana Iacono whose nose piercing is...ahem...part of her religious expression. That's right; it seems that Ariana and her mother "belong to a small religious group called the Church of Body Modification, which sees tattoos, piercings and the like as channels to the divine." And that means, says the ACLU, that the high school is violating the young woman's constitutional rights.

"This is a case about a family's right to send a 14-year-old honor student to public school without her being forced to renounce her family's religious beliefs," wrote lawyers from the ACLU and the Raleigh firm of Ellis & Winters in a brief supporting the lawsuit.

You can dream up the wildest, wackiest of satires to illuminate the post-Christian madness of the West. But when you get up in the morning, you read stories like this -- real life accounts that go farther into the surreal and sinister than you could ever imagine.

Goodnight, Gracie.

Claire Talks with Her City Councilman

We had already contacted the office of our new Omaha City Council member to voice disagreements with votes he had made but after yesterday's post ("Citizens Paying A Criminal's Bills, Drunks at the Movies -- Omaha's City Council At Work"), Claire made another attempt to talk to him personally.

They did. In fact, they talked for 15-20 minutes yesterday afternoon and, as a proper follow up to yesterday's post (as well as an encouragement for you to engage your own City Councilpersons), I asked Claire to write a brief summary of their conversation.

I had left a message for Thomas Mulligan (the Omaha city councilman for our area), asking him to please return my call to discuss concerns I had about how the city of Omaha is being run nowadays. Having received a rather brusque reception on other times I had called, I was pleasantly surprised when Mr. Mulligan did call a couple of hours later.

We had a very calm, personable conversation but one in which I raised my disagreement with his votes on the new city budget, new taxes, paying $39,000 for a criminal’s hospital bill and granting a liquor license for a movie theater. I also expressed my concerns about the need to clean up the Old Market of sex shops and the failure of city officials and police to pursue illegal actions by these shops, the massage and escort services. I asked how he was going to vote on the upcoming “gender ordinance” proposed by Ben Gray and inquired about what he had done regarding the Planned Parenthood opening in his district.

His answers? Well, Mr. Mulligan explained how he had tried to whittle down Mayor Suttle's exorbitant budget and was pleased at being able to cut it down by several million dollars. Not enough, I told him. Citizens are tightening their belts all across the country and yet we can't convince government to do the same. Councilman Mulligan agreed and spoke of the Council's efforts to deal with the police and fire unions to renegotiate contracts to bring down Omaha’s huge unfunded liability concern.

About the criminal's hospital bill, Mr. Mulligan said they had no choice. The city would have ended up paying more had they faced a lawsuit from UNMC.

He told me he had met with city planners about the Planned Parenthood facility and will "keep an eye on it." Same for the Old Market and the other things I had mentioned. Indeed, that was a frequent sentiment -- he's going to keep an eye on a lot of stuff. Like the liquor license granted to the movie theater. Mr. Mulligan voted for that because other theaters had one and that they promised to "regulate" sales and behavior. He would keep an eye on that too.

The councilman explained that a "task force" was looking over the Ben Gray ordinance about gender protection and he would review the information. Huh? What's a task force needed for? Why do we elect you guys then? I urged him to think about his vote very carefully because protecting gender orientation (let alone, "gender expression") in the same way one does religion or race is going to present a whole pack of problems.

In general terms, I encouraged Mr. Mulligan to avoid signing away any of our culture's historic moral standards or religious liberties -- because once you do, it’s almost impossible to get them back.

We talked about a "common sense" approach to city government. He spoke of being Catholic and I emphasized that my Christian values determine everything I do; it should be the same for him. We both agreed that Omaha is good place to live and raise a family. But I expressed my fears that it won't stay that way if governing officials cave in to liberal, immoral and overly expensive policies.

I very much appreciate Mr. Mulligan calling me and taking the time to address my concerns. I told him so even as I told him I would continue to pray for him. And prayer is certainly needed frequently for these folks; theirs is not an easy job.

But remember too that they are supposed to be representing us (that's how a democratic republic works), so they need to hear our values and our ideas, courteously but frequently expressed.

Changing the Rules to Cheapen Human Life

As pro-life advocates have repeatedly warned, the grand scheme behind embryonic stem cell "research" does not involve finding medical cures and treatments for disease and disability. Rather, the drive is to further de-value human life AND to make a lot of money in the process.

This is why, despite the complete failure of ESCR to produce medically useful results, academics continue to give big promises, beg for more funds, and draw attention away from adult stem cells which is where all of the progress is being made.

Now comes a proposed change in California law which would push ESCR even further -- a law that would completely distort both the English language and the millenia-old respect of Western civilization for prenatal human life. This pending regulation change (DH-08-001) would remove altogether the consideration of "humanity" from the human embryo, equating it with nothing more sacred or deserving of dignity than an unneeded tissue specimen -- like a biopsy or an ingrown toenail.

The American College of Embryology understands the scope of this dastardly proposal and, therefore, opposes it vehemently.

$1 Billion Govt Building (That You Can't Get To!)

Facebook friends Michelle and Roy alerted me to this laughable example of government incompetence. Well, if anything that wastes $1 billion can be laughable.

Check it out -- but note that the expose' comes from a conservative Canadian newspaper who, I believe, found the original story in the Federal Times. Obviously, 60 Minutes, the New York Times and the liberal lasses from The View don't have time to cover such stories.

The federal government has built a one billion dollar office complex in Virginia to house some 6,400 Pentagon workers that are to be moved soon. It’s a beautiful new office complex that rises like a mountain next to Northern Virginia’s I-395. But there are a few little problems.

There is no parking for one thing and for another, even if there was a parking lot for 6,400 workers, there are no roads to GET them there!

That’s right, there is no access that won’t cause tremendous traffic jams for the area. Worse, there aren’t any bus or Metro train stops anywhere near the building so workers cannot even take advantage of the Washington area’s extensive public transportation network to get to their new offices...

The accompanying photo of the Base Realignment and Closure building along 1-395 comes from the Federal Times article linked above. It is a detailed review of how this debacle happened and how, after much conversation and $700,000 spent by the State of Virginia, it remains a political disaster.

UN Report Slams Arizona, Insists on Applying International Law

Critics of government globalism have always been denounced by academia and the mainstream press as nativist cranks or religious crackpots, even as the reasons for fearing a "new world order" became clearer, more compelling and more abundant -- the ascension of leftist, Nanny State politics in the West; the subjugation of sovereignty by the European Union; the extended reach of the United Nations; the surrender of national governments to "world" treaties and international courts; etc.

And this move to globalism (a move dictated by socialism, pro-abortion population controllers, the politics of envy, and disdain for Judaeo-Christian values) is increasing every day.

One of the latest examples is this week's report from the Global Migration Group (one of the innumerable UN agencies) which viciously criticizes and threatens the State of Arizona. That report equates supporters to “xenophobes and racists” and, though it did not specifically name Arizona, the intent was transparent to everyone. The report pronounced as shameful those nations who are "human rights abusers," nations who viewed illegal immigrants “through the lens of sovereignty, border security or law enforcement, sometimes driven by hostile domestic constituencies.”

Furthermore, the UN agency insisted that governments grant illegals “economic, social, and cultural rights” which, among other things, include labor protections, legal redress of grievances, health care, bi-lingual schools and, you guessed it, “reproductive healthcare.”

The report also called for "international law" to assume authority over these situations.

Do you still think critics of a one world government are the crazy ones?

And remember, the current President of the United States feels more respect and loyalty to the UN than he does to Arizona. For it is Barack Obama who refuses to enforce Arizona law or even the federal immigration laws that predate SB 1070. It is Barack Obama who shamelessly groveled before the UN, apologizing for Arizona's law and promising to use his Justice Department to defeat it.

What can be done about the encroaching powers of globalism? It's the same agenda as always: pray fervently, stand for freedom by raising its banner for all to see, and provide the encouragement and support needed to those who fight for liberty and the Rule of Law in the political arena.

Resisting The Road to Serfdom

On Monday night a few of us got together to discuss our reading of F.A. Hayek's provocative analysis of socialism, The Road to Serfdom. We all agreed it was no easy read, but very well worthwhile. Indeed, after two hours of discussion, we felt we were just hitting our stride. But then, as Christian activists, our discussion also included exploring the best responses we could employ to the book's lessons.

And The Road to Serfdom has many lessons.

The book was published in England in 1944 but Hayek's detailed, documented description of the motives and methodology (not to mention the brutish and inefficient ends) of centralized economic planning (i.e., socialism) could well be a contemporary's review of Barack Obama's game plan.

Thus, as enlightening a book as it was, it was plenty scary too.

As is always the case with these Book It! discussions sponsored by Vital Signs, we profited greatly from both the reading and the conversation. And we believe you'd find them very useful too.

Next up in our series is Malcom Muggeridge's provocative pro-life drama, "Sentenced to Life." That's coming up on November 15th.

Foreclosure Crisis Endangers Taxpayers...Again

...According to LPS Applied Analytics, 2 million households are in foreclosure, with another 2.37 million badly delinquent and awaiting foreclosure.

Nearly all foreclosure cases are handled on paper submissions -- there are no trials. But with suspect affidavits, judges will order full trials -- which could add a full year of delay, on top of the current average of 478 days between the first missed payment and a foreclosure sale.

During the delays, borrowers will stay in their houses without paying interest, while banks pay real-estate taxes and even upkeep. Since we're talking hundreds of thousands of cases, lenders are in for some pretty staggering losses.

Which means you are. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (which have already eaten $148 billion in taxpayer funds over the last two years) own or guarantee about half of all mortgages -- $5.5 trillion worth. The taxpayers also guarantee many other loans via the Federal Housing Administration (which is now insuring one in three new mortgage loans). And taxpayers own a majority stake in GMAC since advancing $17 billion to save the mortgage giant during the financial crisis.

One way or the other, the majority of these fresh losses will end up on Uncle Sam.

This problem will also make foreclosed homes much harder to sell -- because any subsequent buyer will be vulnerable to a legal claim that his title is bad. One title company, Old Republic National Title, has already stopped insuring houses sold at GMAC foreclosures.

Buyers will drop their bids on foreclosed homes, worried that they're buying a pig in a poke. And distressed sales now make up one in three sales nationally -- and more in states at the center of the mortgage meltdown, such as California.

Even people who've bought houses at past foreclosure sales -- before this problem emerged -- could have trouble selling now, especially with buyers finding it harder to get title insurance.

Banks, forced to review million of files, will have to charge higher interest rates to cover their increased costs. That could cause a further slide in home prices...

What can be done? Stephen B. Meister, the author of this New York Post article, gives some suggestions at the conclusion. Read the whole piece here. (Hat tip: Lucianne.com)

Obama White House Guilty of Cover-Up. Press Ignores Story.

A White House cover-up, one exposed by a commission the President himself appointed?

If the President involved in this affair were a Republican, America would be treated to full court press coverage of the scandal. It would be headline news for days. 60 Minutes would feature it. Katie Couric and Stone Phillips would be doing regular updates of who knew when. Senators would initiate special hearings. Geraldo Rivera would open a musty room in a Washington warehouse.

But wait. The cover-up turns out to involve Barack Obama and his White House team blocking efforts by scientists to let America know just how bad the Gulf oil spill was.

Oh.

In that case, the AP summarizes the scandal in a 5-sentence story (no kidding, 5 sentences)...the mainstream press completely ignores the revelations...and everything settles back to normal.

Establishing Common Ground

Rusty Wright has some helpful advice for those who desire to share their Christian faith with unbelievers, especially with skeptics or adherents of other religions. He calls it Advocacy Apologetics and while it forcefully rejects cowardice or compromise, it does emphasize an initial "seeking of common ground" in order to most winsomely and effectively get a hearing.

It's a brief article -- check it out.

Communism On Trial, Finally

In the Western and Asian press, as well as in statements by various governments, a distinct effort has been made to reduce the crimes of Duch and of Khieu Samphan to matters of local circumstance. It is as if an unfortunate catastrophe had fallen on Cambodia in 1975 called the “Khmer Rouge,” killing 1.5 million Khmers...

The true explanation, the meaning of the crime, can be found in the declarations of the Khmer Rouge themselves: just as Hitler described his crimes in advance, Pol Pot (who died in 1998) had explained early on that he would destroy his people, so as to create a new one. Pol Pot called himself a Communist; he became one in the 1960s as a student in Paris, then a cradle of Marxism. Since Pol Pot and leaders of the regime that he forced on his people referred to themselves as Communists—and in no way claimed to be heirs of some Cambodian dynasty—we must acknowledge that they were, in fact, Communists.

What the Khmer Rouge brought to Cambodia was in fact real Communism. There was no radical distinction, either conceptually or concretely, between the rule of the Khmer Rouge and that of Stalinism, Maoism, Castroism, or the North Korean regime. All Communist regimes follow strangely similar trajectories, barely colored by local traditions. In every case, these regimes seek to make a blank slate of the past and to forge a new humanity. In every case, the “rich,” intellectuals, and skeptics wind up exterminated...

There is no such thing as real Communism without massacre, torture, concentration camps, gulags, or laogai...

Communist ideology leads necessarily to mass violence, because the masses do not want real Communism. This is as true in the rice fields of Cambodia as in the plains of Ukraine or under Cuban palms...

The above are excerpts from "Communism’s Nuremberg," Guy Sorman's excellent City Journal article (translated by Alexis Cornel). Read it in its entirety here.

Citizens Paying A Criminal's Bills, Drunks at the Movies -- Omaha's City Council At Work

Was it the Omaha City Council's inordinate fear of lawsuits or the typical generosity politicians feel when they're handing out someone else's money?

Whatever the motive, the Council caved in and agreed to pay the hospital expenses of William Worley, the getaway driver in a robbery who was shot when he turned his vehicle into a weapon and rammed police cruisers.

That's $39,000 Omaha taxpayers have to dish out -- with Dr. Franklin Thompson the only Council member to vote against the settlement.

But the Council was unanimous in another lousy decision, one that should make you consider more carefully where you choose to see a movie. For the Councilpersons voted 7-0 to recommend approval of a liquor license for Aksarben Cinema, a 10-screen multiplex movie theater near 63rd and Center Streets. That's right, along with the buttered popcorn and the Milk Duds, moviegoers will be able to purchase beer, wine and even mixed drinks at the concession stands.

Those who know all too well how festive and endearing drunks can be at sporting events will now have the pleasure of experiencing the same when they go to the movie show.

Good grief.

As I wrote about yesterday, Omahans are increasingly justified in being disgusted with the performance of their City Council.

"I'm An American"

From the song's writer/performer, John Schwarzman:

Does this song say what you are feeling? I'm a "spare bedroom" guitar player who was inspired to write and produce this song and video. I hope it inspires you. If you like it, please leave a comment, share it with others and pass it along! Send this video and its message around the world and back.

I'm happy to say that the song was featured on Sept 16 in an hour-long segment with Gary Sutton and Jim Horn on News Radio 910 in York PA. They invited me on the air to talk and to take calls. Never done anything like that before! Gary and Jim said it went really well. They and their listeners could not have been nicer. It was awesome!

People have asked - "I'm an American" is available at iTunes and Amazon. The album cover art has the title and says "Play it loud. Play it Proud." Can't miss it!

Thanks for viewing!

By the way, the young guy kneeling on the far right of the first row of the flight crew picture was my own Dad. The photo was taken during B-17 flight training school in 1943.

Sidewalk Counseling: Can It Get More Intense?

Yesterday's sidewalk counseling experience at the abortion clinic was just about as dramatic and emotional as you can get. For it combined the usual sadness of seeing abortion clients disregard our offers of alternatives with two exceptional situations:

1) having one of the women who took her daughter (presumably) into the abortion mill be someone Claire and I know and have regular contact with; and

2) having a woman break down into heavy crying as I shared with her the facts about abortion and the offer to take her to the nearby pregnancy center where she could find safety, peace, and compassionate care for her and her unborn baby. The woman eventually did go (with the baby's father) to A Woman's Touch as well as getting a lot of loving attention and help from us. We were, of course, very thrilled but we also know that there remain strong pressures on her to abort her child. We urge you to remember her in your prayers.

And us too.

Republican Heroes? Have You Ever Heard of Such a Thing?

Michael Zak takes a novel approach to the culture wars by boldly boasting the historical record of the Republican Party. Rather then sheepishly bow to the Democrat's ongoing myths (and frequently, outright lies) about the G.O.P., Zak brings the history and heroes of the Republican Party into the fray.

No political party is perfect and both parties have their share of scalawags. But Zak is evening out the playing field by bringing out the historical facts which give a more accurate, more balanced view of America's political history. In so doing, he is countering the leftist bias and obscurantism of America's media and educational establishments -- bias and obscurantism that has been of tremendous propaganda value to the Democrats.

So, you want to learn things about Republicans (and Democrats) that you'll never learn from PBS, CBS, or your daughter's high school civics book? Then bookmark Michael Zak's blog, Grand Old Partisan, and check in often.

Here's an example to show you why I've done just that.

Republicans denounce Ku Klux Klan dominance of the 1924 Democratic National Convention.

Throughout the campaign, but on this day most notably, the Republican Party denounced William Jennings Bryan (D-NE) for supporting the Ku Klux Klan at the 1924 Democratic National Convention.

Bryan, a three-time Democrat presidential nominee, also backed the Klan's favorite for the nomination, William McAdoo, son-in-law of former Democrat President Woodrow Wilson (photo at left). It was President Wilson who in 1915 helped revive the Ku Klux Klan by premiering in the White House Birth of a Nation. This pro-KKK movie was based on The Clansman, a racist novel written by one of Wilson's college pals, who had been a Democrat state legislator.

So dominant was the Klan among the delegates that the 1924 Democratic National Convention became known as the "Klanbake." The wrangling went on for nine days, exposing the Democratic Party to an appalled nationwide radio audience.

Guatemala Experiments Show Again -- Science Needs Ethical Boundaries

Americans reeled this weekend with the revelations that the United States during the Truman administration had funded scientists who intentionally infected people from Guatemala with sexually transmitted disease so they could study the disease and its potential treatments.

Hillary Clinton properly apologized to the people of Guatemala but that hardly lessens our guilt or sense of shame. To realize that our country engaged in the same kind of cruel, immensely immoral experiments as did the Nazis of the Third Reich, is indeed a horrible disgrace. But will we learn from this mortifying example of bad science? Will it cause Americans to re-think our practices of abortion, euthanasia, or embryonic stem cell research?

Wesley J. Smith comments:

This story raises several issues and teaches important lessons. Obviously, the experiments violated human exceptionalism since the scientists treated other human beings as less than equal by intentionally giving them very serious diseases so they could be studied.

It also illustrates that focusing exclusively on furthering naked science is dangerous. Here’s what I mean: I have no doubt that from a purely scientific perspective, the experimenters believed they wold obtain important and valuable information about STDs and their treatment. But gaining scientific information alone is not all that matters. Ethics are crucial if science is to be kept from doing monstrous things in the great cause of gathering and applying knowledge. Indeed, these experiments were reminiscent of the notorious Tuskegee atrocities, in which poor African-Americans were syphilis were allowed to go untreated as the disease progressed.

We hear often today in current ethical debates over the proper parameters of scientific endeavor that the desires of scientists and the advancement of science are almost all that matters. Let scientists decide the ethics of science, we are told. But history shows–and this story verifies–that such an attitude leads to disaster. Science, like any powerful sector, needs independent checks and balances. This awful story proves it.

Staying Clean & Warm to Cost a Lot More Now. Thanks, Mr. President.

The Energy Department of the Obama administration is guilty of making vastly exaggerated claims for their new "efficiency standard" laws. Some of those claims are backed by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (a government-funded group with a powerful financially-driven bias) and some seem to be invented out of whole cloth.

For instance, the Energy Department insists that the new standards it requires of 26 household products (microwave ovens, incandescent reflector lamps, washing machines, dryers, and so on) will save consumers between $250 billion and $300 billion on their energy bills through 2030.

And that's not all. The department's new standards on a variety of heating appliances (water heaters, pool heaters, gas fireplaces) will "avoid emissions equivalent to taking 46 million cars off the road for one year."

That's right. 46,000,000 cars.

But if you think those estimates are hard to swallow (and they most certainly are), wait until you have to swallow the extra outlay of cash to buy these Obama-required appliances. For instance, your new water heater is going to a lot more more expensive because of these new standards, from $67 up to $974 depending on size and type.

Don't forget, this is all courtesy of our Nanny State President. Barack Obama ordered his Energy Department to impose the efficiency rules shortly after taking office.

However, Ben Lieberman, an environmental expert at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, believes the regulations "will raise the purchase price of appliances – in some cases more than is ever likely to be earned back in the form of energy savings.Worse, several may adversely impact product performance and reliability. There are potentially problematic regulations on the way for virtually every room in the house."

Lieberman told FoxNews.com that the real issue is consumer choice."If these products can sell themselves, then they ought to sell themselves. We wouldn't need laws forcing us to make these particular choices. I think the fact that it has to be mandated is a red flag that it doesn't live up to the hype."

He also said the last regulation for washing machines both raised the cost of many models by hundreds of dollars while compromising cleaning ability. "Yet another round could make things worse." Lieberman also noted that the Energy Department acknowledged during its last round of central air-conditioner standards in January 2001 that many homeowners would never recoup the additional up-front cost of compliant models. "The new standards could be an even lousier deal."

Omaha's Civic Leaders Are Failing the City

Last week I posted an Action Alert item about the proposed change in the City of Omaha's policies, "Will Omaha Protect 'Sexual Orientation' and 'Gender Expression' as Civil Rights?"

It's received quite a bit of attention and, as the e-mail pile indicates, it has been attached or linked to the e-mail lists of several Christian activists around town. That's great...but only if it is helping generate a lot of courteous, principled protests of this proposal.

So, let's keep it up because: 1) we don't have much time; 2) the stakes are very high; and 3) the post-Sigerson City Council is proving to be a disaster for our community. Citizens who yet care about the moral and economic health of Omaha must make clear to the Council how dramatically unpopular with the citizens are outrageous new taxes, adding "gender expression" as a special politically empowered class, refusing to act on the increasing prostitution traffic occurring under the banner of "escort" and "massage" services (salaciously advertised in the Yellow Pages), and refusing to act upon the illegality of "adult" shops in the Old Market and elsewhere.

The City Council dares to refuse CVS the right to build a pharmacy but nonchalantly allows sex shops to operate in Omaha's most important tourist area. This is responsible civic government?

Of course not. So I encourage you again to contact your City Council member and the Mayor of Omaha as soon as possible to let them know your opinions about the proposed change in determining that "sexual orientation" and "gender expression" deserve the same legal status as race or religion. And while you're at it, let them know your disappointment with their other actions -- and lack thereof.

If you've already contacted them -- great; now do so again. And then suggest to your friends, neighbors and church members they do the same. And quickly.

The Examiner Takes On the Green Monster

If you're looking for an enlightening primer on just what's happening in the convoluted, corrupt and counter-productive world of "green politics," you'll likely find no better than last week's series of articles in the Washington Examiner.

Published in association with Pajamas Media and written by such investigative reporters as Mark Hemingway, Mark Tapscott, and Ron Arnold, this series goes behind the Hollywood hype and shows you the real ethos, the real money and the real movers and shakers of the "green" power grab.

There are 25 articles in all. But don't worry. They're brief...and they're fascinating.

I'd suggest you bookmark one of them (the whole series is listed on the right sidebar) and read a few every day this week. You will thus be excellently equipped to be the effective "green buster" in your neighborhood.

And with the way these guys are amassing power over our economy and our freedoms, we need all the "green busters" we can get.

Among the titles in this superb series?

* Environmentalists aren’t really about clean air and water
* Big Green: They’re the green gorillas of American politics
* Big Green regulations suffocate jobs, economic growth
* How Wendy Van Asselt and her friends made 26 million acres disappear
* Don’t get hit on the campaign trail by this environmental wrecking ball
* Big Green: How much do they make?
* Global warming and EPA's threat to regulate everything
* How environmentalists do it when Congress fails them
* When journalists become Big Green's spinmeisters
* Portrait of a Big Green activist who scares your kids
* Schwarzenegger’s green dream for California

The Examiner and Pajamas Media have performed a terrific service in bringing these important articles forward. Don't miss 'em.

Heroes!

Earlier in the morning, I posted Vital Signs Ministries' debut YouTube presentation. I hope you'll find it of value and help us spread the word.

Now here is the second. It is a shorter piece (less than 5 minutes) which deals with heroes. We hope you find it inspiring. We certainly do every time we watch it.

You'll notice, I hope, that we try in the video to expand one's understanding of heroism. And then...we go recruiting for new heroes to emerge.

Again, we hope you like it and we ask your assistance to pass these new YouTube presentations along to others using e-mail and the other forwarding buttons below, Facebook posts, suggestions to your pastors and youth leaders, and so on. Thank you.

Pro-Abortion Isn't Only Anti-Child, It's Anti-Science

If one dares to look beyond the slogans, the grandiose hype and the arrogant (but ultimately bogus) boasts of pro-choice advocates, it's rather plain to see that it is the abortion proponents that are acting arbitrarily and against science...not the pro-lifers.

Read through Nancy Pearcey's fine essay for a bunch of telling examples.

Saturday Morning Prayer Vigil

For those interested in joining with us (or in praying along with us wherever you'll be), several of the Board members of Vital Signs Ministries and others in our sidewalk counseling team will be conducting a brief prayer meeting tomorrow morning in front of the building in northwest Omaha scheduled to be the new Planned Parenthood abortion mill.

The building is on 93rd Street, just a block north of Maple. Parking is available in the parking lot of Hope Church, located on the west side of the street just 50 yards north of Maple. We will be there for 45 minutes or so beginning at 8:30. We will not be using any signs tomorrow -- we're just praying.

Our prayers (corporate or private, as you prefer) will focus on entreating God's mercy that the wicked place never opens.

We would be delighted for you to join us.

Congress Gets One Right: Extends Cord Blood Program

How about that? Congress can occasionally do something right.

The House of Representatives, today, passed the reauthorization of the “Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act,” a bill written by pro-life Congressman Chris Smith in 2005. The vote makes it so the provisions of the bill, promoting stem cell research with umbilical cord blood, are in place through 2015.

The landmark bill, HR 2520, was signed into law by President Bush in December 2005 and today's reauthorization was approved by voice vote.

On the House floor, Smith said "it remains one of the best kept secrets in America that umbilical cord blood stem cells and adult stem cells in general are curing people of a myriad of terrible conditions and diseases."

Umbilical cords are a rich, non-controversial source of stem cells, yet hospitals throw millions of them away each year because prior to the law the infrastructure required to properly collect and store them was not available. The 2005 law increased the number of cord blood units and stem cells available for treating patients and expanded research.

“That law created a new nationwide umbilical cord blood stem cell program designed to collect, derive, type and freeze cord blood units for transplantation into patients to mitigate and even cure serious disease and pursuant to the law, also provided stem cells for research,” Smith said. “The new cord blood program was combined in the 2005 law with an expanded bone marrow initiative.”...

Church History and Abortion

Among the claims made by pro-choice members of the Religious Left is that the Christian Church didn't really oppose abortion until quite late in her history and that the post-Reformation evangelicals didn't oppose abortion at all.

This new 10.5 minute presentation created by Vital Signs Ministries blows both of those charges apart. Take a look and then, since this represents a new and, we think, valuable technological step for Vital Signs, please help us pass it along.
