Was it the Omaha City Council's inordinate fear of lawsuits or the typical generosity politicians feel when they're handing out someone else's money?
Whatever the motive, the Council caved in and agreed to pay the hospital expenses of William Worley, the getaway driver in a robbery who was shot when he turned his vehicle into a weapon and rammed police cruisers.
That's $39,000 Omaha taxpayers have to dish out -- with Dr. Franklin Thompson the only Council member to vote against the settlement.
But the Council was unanimous in another lousy decision, one that should make you consider more carefully where you choose to see a movie. For the Councilpersons voted 7-0 to recommend approval of a liquor license for Aksarben Cinema, a 10-screen multiplex movie theater near 63rd and Center Streets. That's right, along with the buttered popcorn and the Milk Duds, moviegoers will be able to purchase beer, wine and even mixed drinks at the concession stands.
Those who know all too well how festive and endearing drunks can be at sporting events will now have the pleasure of experiencing the same when they go to the movie show.
Good grief.
As I wrote about yesterday, Omahans are increasingly justified in being disgusted with the performance of their City Council.
