An Open Letter Regarding Pro-lIfe Measures & Leftist Propaganda

Versions of the following letter are being sent to Senators Fischer and Ricketts, Congressman Bacon, President Trump, and Vice-President Vance. I encourage you to consider writing similar advocacy correspondence.

Dear Senator Fischer,

I wrote last week on behalf of Vital Signs Ministries here in Omaha, asking for your energetic support of the pro-life priorities which remain after the passage of the “Big Beautiful Bill” -- the complete and permanent de-funding of the mega-abortion profiteer that is Planned Parenthood, repeal of the F.A.C. E. Act, a serious scaling back of the poisonous abortion drugs that are killing millions of preborn children as well as severely injuring so many of those children’s mothers, and increased conscience protection for those who refuse to perjure their souls by supporting in any way such blasphemous actions as abortion or sexual perversion.

Thank you, Senator Fischer, for your prayerful attention to those concerns.

However, I also wanted to send along my concerns about a few other important issues, issues that are of grave concern to conservatives across the nation. 1) Would you please co-sponsor and work for the passage of S.669, Disengaging Entirely From the United Nations Debacle Act of 2025 or the DEFUND Act of 2025.

And 2) Would you please join in the move to reverse the historical revisionism, leftist ideologies, and anti-religious trends which have marked the progressives’ control of the Smithsonian, the National Art Gallery, and the National Park Service?

Again, thank you.

“Don’t Be Neutral on Abortion”

In this month’s edition of the Vital Signs Ministries newsletter,
Denny talks about the March of Dimes’ “neutrality on abortion” and the extreme moral danger of Christians adopting the same attitude.

An Open Letter to Senator Deb Fischer

Dear Senator Fischer,

Just a quick list of a few of the reasons I am writing you this morning...

* As you know, Senator, Planned Parenthood is NOT a charity nor is it an honest health care provider. It is, in fact, a mega-abortion profiteer which not only charges women for barbarically destroying their preborn children but which also sucks in an almost unbelievable flood of dollars from federal and state governments.

* Indeed, more than 1/3 of Planned Parenthood’s millions come from American taxpayers. And that amount is more than $2,000,000 a day!

* The scandal of Planned Parenthood’s lack of integrity and quality care is increasing as more women are maimed and even killed by shoddy and callous abortionists. My goodness, even the New York Times has begun to report on the botched abortions, the IUDs implanted in pregnant women, the delays in calling for emergency medical care when their patients are in life-threatening distress, and so on.

* And those vast amounts of money that Planned Parenthood draws isn’t going to help women. It is instead going to further the efforts of the Democrat party. Oh yes, except for the money needed for the exorbitant salaries of their leadership. Case in point? Planned Parenthood CEO Alexis McGill Johnson’s yearly salary of $904,014.

Senator Fisher, as a dependable friend of the pro-life movement, you know this is the best chance the nation has had in many years to defund Planned Parenthood. So, let’s get this thing done, okay? Thank you.

Most sincerely,

An Open Letter to Congressman Don Bacon

Dear Congressman Bacon,

I write this morning with a polite appeal for you to spend less time and effort on criticizing President Trump’s long overdue actions to save the Republic and instead pursue with greater dedication the conservative goals you have promised your constituency over the years. Yes, I know you might be enjoying these new opportunities to make a small splash with the liberal media by playing the contrarian to President Trump, but the tone and timing of your criticisms have been a very sad disappointment to those of us who have enthusiastically supported you in the past.

We certainly wish you would concentrate less on being popular with the cool kids of the discredited “old guard” media and more on de-funding the mega-abortion profiteer Planned Parenthood, better protecting voter integrity and efficiency, and helping the President overcome the attacks of far-left judges in his attempt to make America more prosperous, more free, and more safe.

And, before I close this letter, may I quickly return to my request for greater involvement on your part on the pro-life issues that you have publicly pledged support for in the past. We would like to see inspiring, efficient leadership on this front. Why not take some of these new media opportunities to champion the cause of preborn boys and girls? Also, I note (again with disappointment) that you have declined to co-sponsor several very important pro-life measures in the current Congress. Among those have been H.R. 7 (No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2025), H.R. 272 (Protecting Life and Taxpayers Act of 2025), H.R.589 (FACE Act Repeal Act of 2025), and H.R.682 (Heartbeat Protection Act of 2025). Let’s remedy that oversight this week, okay?

Most sincerely,

EPS Event Inspires 800, John & Mary Ann Kellogg Honored

Claire and I were honored to be the guests of Dr. Ed and Sandy DeSimone at the Glow fundraising banquet for Essential Pregnancy Services last night. It was a great evening and among the special highlights were the conversations around the table, the unique and inspirational address by keynote speaker Steventhen Holland, and the excellent news that the EPS Board had confirmed interim Director Dennis Waggoner to be the new Executive Director.

But we were also delighted that The Spirit of EPS Award for 2025 was given to pro-life heroes (and our dear friends of longstanding) John and Mary Ann Kellogg. In fact, you can watch right here the brief but very moving testimonial video EPS presented to the 800 or so assembled at the CHI Center last night.

A Jan. 22 Open Letter to President Trump

(Of course, we encourage your letters and emails of a similar nature.)

A Jan. 22 Open Letter

Dear President Trump,

Congratulations on what was a most dramatic and encouraging inauguration!

You are making America stronger and fairer and more efficient -- and doing it with much needed speed. Thank you, Mr. President. (Yes, it’s terrific to be able to say that again!) We will continue in our frequent and fervent prayers for you, your family, and your efforts to make America great again.

And, to that noble end, Mr. President, we would like to urge you (on this the anniversary of Roe v Wade) to quickly enact the following policies -- each one representing a key priority for the reversal of the Biden administration’s wicked worship of abortion.

1) The immediate release of all pro-life advocates who the Biden administration had thrown in jail because they dared pray in front of an abortion mill.

2) The defunding of Planned Parenthood.

3) The reinstatement of the Mexico City policy and the cutting off of all other funding to anti-life agencies and programs.

We have so appreciated your quick, decisive moves to move our nation back from the brink of disaster to which the Biden administration had brought it. But, Mr. President, please now mark these 3 items as immediate priorities as well.

Thank you.

An Unforgettable NFA Breakfast

Claire and I enjoyed a very inspiring morning down in Lincoln where we were blessed to attend the Nebraska Family Alliance breakfast with their very special guests being the 6 N.U. athletes whose late-minute pro-life TV ad was so profoundly valuable to the defeat of Amendment 439, the abortion extremists’ effort to enshrine unlimited abortion into the state constitution. Indeed, the testimonies of these noble, courageous young women was a momentous and memorable treasure to all of us in that large audience. Thank you, ladies. You were terrific! And thank you NFA for a most stimulating program.

Also noteworthy was that the audience this morning included more than half of the state senators of the Unicameral which started its session earlier this week. We were pleased to get better acquainted with to two of those senators who sat at our table -- Beau Ballard from District 21 (northwest Lincoln) and Stan Clouse, Kearney’s former Mayor who is beginning his first term in the Unicameral for District 37. Also at our table were Gary & Sue Bunjer, longtime friends and colleagues, especially in our mutual involvement with Assure Women’s Center.

Why A Pro-Life Witness Outside Abortion Businesses?

Claire and I and many of our close friends have participated in a peaceful, prayerful pro-life witness and sidewalk counseling outside abortion mills for over 40 years. Here are 5 quick reasons why.

1) The presence of peaceful, prayerful pro-life advocates outside an abortion clinic has a profound and ongoing effect on those with abortion appointments, on the abortionist and his/her employees, on the people walking or driving by the business.  It provides effective (and memorable) messages regarding the wrongness of abortion, the availability of alternatives, and the offer of forgiveness of abortion sins through the mercy of Christ’s gospel.

2) A pro-life witness outside an abortion business means that men and women -- even those who ultimately decide to commit the abortion -- will forever remember that someone was there to plead with them, “No, don’t do this. Please let us help you and your baby.”  They will retain in the memory of their abortion experience that someone was standing up for their child…and for the mother herself -- for her spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being. Such memories provide a persuasive incentive for repentance, to seek forgiveness and healing from the God Who delivered His Son to die for mankind’s sins.

3) Being regularly at an abortion clinic and coming face to face with the persons availing themselves of the demonic opportunities for child sacrifice fuels, as nothing else can, one’s commitment to fight against abortion on all other fronts. Political action?  Spiritual intercession?  Crisis pregnancy work?  Pro-life education?  Chastity campaigns?  Efforts to de-fund Planned Parenthood?  Medical ministries? Use of the arts to rebuild a culture of life, love, and justice?

All of these (and more) are profoundly stimulated by a person’s being there at the very doors of death, being regularly reminded by just what the stakes are in this fight.

4) Pro-lifers outside abortion mills save lives by dissuading people from aborting their children...even when they are not aware of their impact. For instance, a winsome pro-life witness challenges the consciences of would-be abortion clients, oftentimes encouraging them to forego their appointment and drive on home. Even clients inside the place will sometimes change their minds and leave.  And, of course, among the dozens or hundreds or thousands who drive by and see peaceful protestors who carry beautiful pictures of babies and signs with such kindhearted messages as “Choose Life,” “Mother and Child: Love Them Both,” and “Life: What a Beautiful Choice,” there will be countless numbers of people who will be moved to reconsider their opinions on abortion. Do you not expect that the Lord carefully tends those seeds of truth thus sown? Do you doubt that people will take what they’ve seen and heard into future meditations, conversations, and especially, abortion temptations? Oh yes; the presence of pro-life advocates outside a place where preborn boys and girls are barbarically destroyed will provide illumination and spiritual conviction that goes far beyond what we can imagine.

5) Because my honor as a Christian is at stake.  Where such brazen, violent injustice is occurring, how can I refuse the opportunity to testify against it?  Think about it -- what does it mean to the reputation of the Church (not to mention her sense of moral priority) if children are brutally murdered in our neighborhoods without us even raising our voices in principled protest?  How much is our evangelism and discipleship tarnished and weakened if we do not take seriously such charges as Jeremiah 22:3 and Isaiah 1:16-17: “Thus says the LORD, ‘Do justice and righteousness, and deliver the one who has been robbed from the power of his oppressor. Also do not mistreat or do violence to the stranger, the orphan, or the widow; and do not shed innocent blood in this place.’” And “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean. Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight. Cease to do evil. Learn to do good. Seek justice. Reprove the ruthless. Defend the orphan. Plead for the widow.”

Fewer and fewer American Christians bother nowadays to go in front of abortion mills to pray and give pro-life witness. That is an ominous warning of how far we have been cowed by the world around us.  We have become indifferent, callous, distracted, and wimpy. Nevertheless, the grace of God remains available to us all -- grace that forgives and cleanses, grace that yields wisdom and strength, grace that yet can bring personal and cultural revolution.

Our marching orders are quite clear. We read them in the Scriptures already listed. And we read them in many others, like Psalm 82:3,4: “Vindicate the weak and fatherless. Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.  Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.” And Proverbs 24: 11,12: “Deliver those who are being taken away to death, and those who are staggering to slaughter, Oh hold them back.” And James 1:27: “Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.”

Giving public witness to the sanctity of life in this darkened and depraved culture is certainly not an easy thing.  But it remains extremely high in the values expressed by our Lord. And that’s why we do it...and why, by the grace of God, we will continue to do it.

Wanna’ come along and join us?

Who Will Speak Up for the Unborn Child?

This afternoon Pastor Doug Russell from Herman Community Church sent over a link to "Who Will?", a 1989 recording by DeGarmo & Key. Though a veteran pro-life activist for more than 40 years, I had never heard this song. But  boy, I'm delighted I finally got round to it. Thank you, Doug, for your VERY encouraging remarks and for sharing this inspirational song. I couldn't help but do the same.

It's in his image they're created
Each one a precious gift of life
How can we steal away their future?
What gives us the power? What gives us the right?

Who will stand up for the children?
Who will fight the battle for them?
Who will speak up for the unborn child?

They long for life with every heartbeat
They speak with tiny hands and feet
But who will help our nation hear them?
It is up to you and it is up to me

Who will stand up for the children?
Who will fight the battle for them?
Who will speak up for the unborn child?

Who is gonna be the voice
For those who have no say or choice?
My heart tells me what I must do
It is up to me and it is up to you

Who will? (we will)
Who will? (we will, we will)
Who will speak up for the unborn child?

Who will? (we will)
Who will? (we will, we will)
Who will speak up for the unborn child?

Who will stand up for the children? (we will)
Who will fight the battle for them? (we will, we will)
Who will speak up for the unborn child?

A Top 10 Pro-life Priority List

A Top 10 Pro-life Priority List
(Encouraged for Lawmakers
by Vital Signs Ministries & Friends)

1) The defunding of Planned Parenthood.

2) The appointing of genuine pro-life people to places of high influence in the new administration and, of course, also in the judiciary.

3) The immediate release of all pro-life advocates who the Biden administration has thrown into federal prisons because they dared pray in front of an abortion mill.

4) To reinstate the Mexico City policy and cut off all other funding to anti-life agencies and programs.

5) To rescind all Biden administration orders and policies that seek to force radically immoral abortion/gender/sexuality/indoctrination practices on Americans.

6) To end the pollution of our nation’s water system from the dangerous chemicals contained in abortion pills.

7) To use the power of the federal government to defend the sanctity of life rather than undermine, even criminalize, that noble purpose.

8) To actively enforce the Comstock Act, a law that governs how the Postal Service deals with the mailing of abortion poisons.

9) To restore the real meaning of Title IX.

10) To do whatever possible to help build a culture of life in America -- a culture that applauds and encourages adoption, that protects freedom of religion and conscience from all attacks, that prohibits Big Tech from maintaining a monopoly on information, and that assists traditional values regarding sexual morality and healthy family life.

Is a YES Vote for 434 Pro-Abortion? Certainly Not!

 Denny,

On the ballot are initiatives 434 and 439. Both are pro-abortion. From “prolife” groups, all I hear is to vote Yes to 434 and NO to 439. Why should I not vote NO to both?

My reply?

Thanks for your concerns. I'm sending along links that express my opinions about the amendments and why I'm siding with NRL, NFA, the NCC, and the other longstanding pro-life organizations who urge a vote YES on 434 and NO on 439. And though a NO vote on both amendments seems to take the high ground, the sad fact is that whichever of the amendments receive the most votes (given that they make the 50% mark) will become law. Therefore, if all of the pro-abortion voters AND all of the voters who are misled by the high-powered ads and deceptive language vote YES on 439 without a higher number voting for 434, Nebraska will see every pro-life measure we have ever passed through the Unicameral thrown out.

It's a matter of numbers. And voting YES on 434 doesn't at all mean, as its critics are saying, that it will mean no further progress can be made via the Unicameral. It simply protects what we've achieved thus far while allowing further pro-life measures be enacted in the future AND while defeating the heinous 439.

I suggest two other points be considered. 1) 434 was carefully written after national pro-life researchers did extensive surveys with Nebraska voters to see what pro-life measures could be (at this moment in history) be realistically protected. With a pro-abortion mania already having overtaken 7 states since the Dobbs ruling, pro-life advocates decided language like 434's would be the very best defense against the extremism of such horrid actions as 439.

And 2) The argument that Nebraska's constitutional language currently protects preborn boys and girls -- and therefore, that 434 would actually make of that constitution a more pro-abortion document -- is inexplicably naive. After all, the existing language has never been practically used to defend prenatal lives, has it? Alas, you might say, it should be. I wholeheartedly agree and yet it hasn't and it won't. Thus, sincere and dedicated pro-life heroes like those of Nebraska Right to Life and the Nebraska Catholic Conference have fought (most circumspectly and prayerfully) over these last several decades to implement practical, meaningful laws that give further protection to unborn children, their moms, and the moral fabric of the culture itself...with a view to always try for more. They deserve gratitude and trust, not vilification.

Vote FOR 434 & Vote AGAINST 439

October 10, 2024
From: Denny Hartford, Director of Vital Signs Ministries
To: All Interested Parties
For Immediate Release:

Vital Signs Ministries has joined Nebraska Right to Life, the Nebraska Catholic Conference, Nebraska Family Alliance, Students for the Life of America, and other pro-life organizations of longstanding in publicly opposing the zealously pro-abortion Initiative 439 which will be on the Nebraska ballot this election. And, along with their colleagues, Vital Signs Ministries is asking Nebraska voters to protect the pro-life gains that have been made through legislation in our state over the years by voting FOR Initiative 434.

In the case of 434, the laws passed thus far in Nebraska to protect preborn boys and girls, to protect girls and women from the violence of abortion, and to try to uphold the ideals of Western civilization regarding a just defense for and compassionate care to the innocent and vulnerable, would stay a part of Nebraska law. And a vote for Initiative 434 would also allow the citizens of Nebraska to persuade the Nebraska legislature to enact more pro-life protections in the future.

Standing against the progress of these just and humane laws, however, is Initiative 439 which will also be on the ballot. And if 439 were to be voted into the state’s constitution, every single pro-life law passed over the decades would no longer apply. 439 denies any limitations on abortion at all, including even regulations regarding health, sanitary conditions, safety, qualifications of abortion practitioners, age, involvement of parents, and so on. It is extreme almost beyond imagination.

The following remarks are from Vital Signs Ministries Director Denny Hartford --

“The immediate purpose of Nebraska Initiative 434 is to protect girls, women, and preborn children from the exploitation and lethal violence of abortion with the secondary effects helping to build a stronger culture of life, love, and justice in our state. On the other hand, Initiative 439 is a truly draconian measure which would eliminate every pro-life law ever passed by the Nebraska Legislature. That would include the compassionate and common-sense laws that prohibit late term abortions, require minors to inform parents of a pending abortion, require women to be fully informed about the realities and risks of abortion, and so on.

Indeed, if 439 were to become part of the Nebraska Constitution, there would be no restraint whatsoever (not even regulation) on abortion businesses, making it immeasurably unsafe for girls and women and babies. No, Initiative 439 is not designed to help women at all; it is merely a bold attempt by the abortion profiteers to increase still further their extremely lucrative businesses. Therefore, I strongly urge my fellow Nebraskans to vote FOR Initiative 434 and to vote AGAINST Initiative 439.”

A Lethal Change in Language

In the passion of progressives to replace the historic and noble ideals of Western Civilization with secularism, hedonism, and statism, they understood that one of the first steps in their plan of conquest was to change the language in which the issues were framed.  For instance, the violent, immoral, and lethal act of elective abortion was eased into the social landscape by calling it a “voluntary interruption of pregnancy” or “an evacuation of uterine content” or the “restoration of normal menstrual function.”  The change in language helped progressives persuade the gullible and thus created dramatic changes in social practice.

It wasn’t rational.  It wasn’t right.  But, for passive people who had already surrendered much of their Christian heritage, their thinking, and their moral code for the self-centeredness of secularism, it worked.

Another vivid illustration of how changes in expression preceded (and thus helped to accelerate) dramatic culture shifts had taken place several years earlier and it too concerned abortion. The issue in that case was early abortions caused by chemicals and devices. You see, the proponents of the sexual revolution and its “sister cause,” the population control movement needed to overcome not only the obstacles of moral traditions, but they had to somehow get around the basic science governing human reproduction.

For the science itself couldn’t be clearer. Indeed, any embryology textbook will lay out the fact that conception occurs when the sperm fertilizes the egg.  At that very moment a new life begins. After that, it's all about growth and development.  The scientific realities do not change. They cannot change. But distorting and denying the science, controlling social trends, and using false propaganda to change minds -- including the sinister manipulation of language? Well, those are other things altogether.

The language employed to describe human reproduction first began to change in the 1960s when population control advocates were looking to sell so-called “birth control” chemicals and devices among cultures that had a high respect for prenatal life. The problem was that the action of the pills and IUDs acted (at least some of the time) after conception. That is, they didn't always prevent conception. But they did prevent the embryonic human being from developing any further. That is abortion.

The primary techniques utilized by these misnamed drugs and devices was to prevent the developing person (already begun at conception and now growing quite rapidly as he or she made their way down the fallopian tube) from implanting in the wall of the cervix or, if implantation did occur, to forcibly dislodge the embryo from its new home in the womb. But remember, this is all after conception. These drugs and devices destroy lives that have already begun.

Once again, the science couldn’t be clearer.  And the science cannot change.  Therefore, for the progressives to fool the public, they went after the words. The population control advocates (and others who wanted to promote the sexual revolution) pressured groups like the American Medical Association to simply ignore the science and change their definition of conception, moving it somewhere “further down the line” from fertilization.

But where along the timeline of the prenatal child’s development could that new definition be placed? For claiming that conception occurs anywhere except the moment of fertilization would be completely arbitrary, completely unscientific, and completely untrue. For, once again, the scientific reality couldn’t be clearer -- a new life has already begun at fertilization and will continue until…well, until death.

The response from the population controllers? “Put the new definition of conception anywhere you want -- as long as it’s after the abortifacient action that these new drugs and devices utilize. You see, we can’t push the product in certain countries (like Catholic Mexico or Hindu India or Muslim Syria) if the people there realize they act post-conception. They don’t want abortion on their conscience. So, help us change the definition so that we can sell these ‘birth control’ drugs and devices as preventing pregnancy rather than stopping a pregnancy that’s already underway.”

That’s exactly what happened. Though it makes no scientific sense, though it’s a lie of the most arrogant and dastardly design, the definition of conception was disconnected from fertilization and linked instead to the embryo's implantation in the uterine wall. The effects of this lie have been universally damaging to life, health, family, and culture. And, of course, along the way, untold millions of preborn boys and girls have been destroyed.

Of course, re-defining conception isn’t the only case where changing language was a sinister prelude to cataclysmic social change.  We see the tactic used everywhere in the culture wars.  Indeed, we live in an Orwellian world in which lies, distortion, omission, manipulation, and obfuscation fill the very air we breathe.  It is an atmosphere whose pollution is added to daily by politicians, academia, Hollywood, judges, Madison Avenue, the mainstream press, and the diversity classes your employer now requires you to attend.

But make no mistake, behind all these sources is the father of lies, he who has been wickedly determined (from his very first rebellion against God) to blind men’s minds, to spread lies, to hinder the proclamation of truth, to call evil good and good evil. Tragically, there have been many men and women giving the devil a lot of help in this campaign.

In stark contrast, however, the faithful Christian calls things by their right name. No snow. No spin. No shuck and jive. We are called to be truth-tellers, light-bearers, and prophets -- courageously, consistently and, as winsomely as possible, speaking the truth in love.

In this post-Christian phase of American history, there are certain lies which need to be opposed with particularly intense and concerted efforts. And among them are the ones I’ve described above. They are lies that have ushered in the silent holocaust of abortion as well as stimulating such corollary evils as physician-assisted suicide, lethal human experimentation, infanticide, and the deliberate cheapening of human life throughout all levels of society.

It was to help counter this dissembling culture of death that Claire and I formed Vital Signs Ministries more than 40 years ago. And, because the liars and cheats haven’t gone away, it is what we’re still about today. Of course, we serve in this mission alongside many, many others who haven’t given in or given up. For despite the enveloping cloud of lies in our era, the Holy Spirit reminds us that the obedient Christian can indeed overcome evil with good. Not only can we escape the tyranny of lies ourselves, but we can also even beat them back as they try to claim new victims.

So refuse to compromise with the lies, distortions, and manipulations of language for evil purposes. Instead, shine as a light in the darkness; speak the truth in love; and call things by their right names.

Postscript -- Do the exhortations in this brief essay also apply to the Christian’s responsibility to address the lies about evolution, sexual practice, gender manipulation, the claims of false religions, and so on? No doubt about it.

Save One or Save None? Some Thoughts on the “Abolitionist” Criticism of the Pro-Life Movement

After a couple of queries regarding the “abolitionist” approach to the scourge of abortion, I’ve decided to post a slightly edited e-mail conversation I recently had with a young friend on the subject.

Hi, Denny and Claire,
Hope you guys are doing well.
Thank you for all you do to love people and protect life!

My wife and I recently ran into someone who is a strong abolitionist against abortion. I was taken aback because they are strongly against any kind of “incremental” pro-life legislation against abortion. They actually oppose such measures believing they are guilty of injustice -- they believe such laws acquit the guilty. I listened to a 2-hour dialogue of an abolitionist trying to convince other pro-life advocates to accept the same views.

I certainly disagree with some of the abolitionist perspective, as it seems very all or nothing. At the same time, I admire their desire to follow the Word of God regarding how full justice should administered. I was wondering what your stance is on Abolitionism.

Don’t feel like you need to give a big response. I know you guys are busy but I really value your thoughts.

Here’s my answer

Hey ----- !

My apologies for not replying sooner. I had planned to do so but then the storm hit us; we lost electric power (still don't have it); and we have been busy the last 3 days doing neighborhood clean-up of big limbs, smaller branches, and so on.

Anyhow – here’s the deal. I too can admire much of what “abolitionists” say. After all, the goal of protecting all innocent human lives is shared by all pro-lifers. Where I part company is when someone criticizes those pro-lifers who are trying to save lives and serve women and families right now...while yet working to create intellectual foundations, laws, and moral momentum to save more in the future.

In a fallen world, a world in which you must deal with current laws, social norms, and other unavoidable practical restraints, to insist on “all or nothing” almost always means you will get the nothing. And way too many of the “abolitionists” seem to be okay with that as long as they can feel (and tell each other) that they and they alone are the purest, the most noble, the true pro-lifers. But not content with merely patting themselves on the back, they often become extremely harsh and unfair in their criticism of other pro-lifers -- and not only in matters of methodology and strategy. Indeed, they end up castigating the sincerity, motives, and personal character of those pro-lifers they disagree with. I know; I am one of the fellows who has been roundly slandered by these folks.

So, here’s the deal. The pro-life champions of the last 60 years have always made the ideal our goal and the standard by which we measure the impact of our prayers and efforts. And that ideal is “the protection by law and social practice of all innocent lives, born and preborn.” But, the dedicated pro-life heroes are not content with ideals or long-term goals. They are intent on saving preborn kids from the wickedness of abortion right now! And as many as possible! So, they do not surrender the ideal, but they do engage in whatever lifesaving measures can be enacted in the meantime. We get what we can actually get; we save whatever lives we can right now even as we challenge the culture to more seriously consider the truths of God.

And remember, it is these same pro-life activists who are now dismissed as compromisers and cowards (and worse) who have not only led the fight in Congress and the state legislatures, they are the same people who started the pro-life pregnancy centers, do the sidewalk counseling, organize the Walks for Life and the Life Chain, put up the pro-life signs in farm fields all across the country, preach the pro-life sermons, write the pro-life books, broadcast the pro-life radio programs, and engage in frequent and fervent prayers against the evils of the anti-life mentality. Good grief.

Let me hearken back to the lifeguard training of my far distant past. Our swim coach/certifier posed this dilemma to us. “Okay, guys; a boat capsizes with 10 people on it. None of them can swim. You’re alone on the beach and it’s all-too-obvious you cannot save them all. So, what do you do?” We all knew the answer. You save someone! And, then if you have a chance, you save another! But, for goodness sakes, the one thing you do NOT do is to just stand there on the shore, bemoaning the sad fact that you can’t save them all. And, related to the present subject, neither does it help to stand there doing nothing except criticize the lifeguard who is trying to save lives!

Think about it. Have pro-life laws, even though none of them have yet outlawed all abortions, saved lives? Of course, they have -- and in untold numbers. Thank the Lord. And have such pro-life laws also enlightened, convicted, and challenged the general culture by making people more sensitive to what abortion really is? Again, of course, they have. There’s no doubt about it. So why the passionate negativity aimed at the pro-life leaders who have ministered in this way?

Here’s another way to evaluate the absolutist strategy of the abolitionists. Imagine a Christian who understands that the Old Testament decreed capital punishment be meted out for a variety of abominable sins, including males engaging in homosexual acts and dressing up as women. Would that person then believe that a Christian who supports laws designed to, say, prohibit the public practice of sodomy, deny the use of homosexual materials in government schools, or disallow drag queen “story hours” in public libraries is wrong to do so because those laws don’t go as far as Scripture directs? Would that be a cave-in, a sell-out of principle? Would Christians who tried to get some degree (indeed, whatever degree was possible) of decency and child protection into the law be condemned as hypocrites and fakers because they are not loudly (and exclusively) demanding the guilty be executed?

Again, in a fallen world, in a darkened culture, in a society where one has to promote righteous causes within the frustrating boundaries of legislatures, judges, public opinion, and so on, you always try to get the most you can -- while always setting the foundation to go yet further towards the biblical ideals. Therefore, I repeat: “you demand all or nothing, you get the nothing every time.”

As you can perhaps tell, ---------, I have thought through these things over the years, but it hasn’t been until recently that those using the term “abolitionists" have been so unfairly critical of other pro-lifers. It is a very sad development and it couldn’t be more counterproductive to the pro-life cause.

Keeping the Killing of Innocents Out of Mind

They trudged up the street, their women in a whispering knot behind them, and now there was mud on their shining shoes. They came to the tangle of bodies and then moved closer together. The living looked at the dead and the dead stared back at them and there was no sound on the hill...

But this was not their guilt, the leading citizens of Ohrdruf explained. They had never shot a man, or used a club. Yes, they were of the same political faith as the executioners. They prospered from the work of these slaves. This camp was in their town but they had never come here before this. Therefore, the leading citizens say, they were blameless. (James Cannon, European Stars and Stripes staff writer, talking about local Germans who were forced by American military officers to march by Ohrdruf, a sub-camp of Buchenwald, after its liberation in April 1945.)

In both Christian compassion and a recognition of our common humanity, pro-life advocates still grieve for the victims of the Nazi barbarism. Yet when we read such passages as this, we also think of the abortion clinics in American neighborhoods where blasphemous brutality against preborn boys and girls (every bit as wicked as anything the Nazis did) is performed nearly every day.

And yet the citizens of American cities and towns drive, walk, and bicycle by abortion businesses without giving a single thought to what’s happening inside. Businesses -- even day care centers, doctors’ offices, and police stations -- may be located right next door. Yet their activities go on apace, very few people troubled by the unjust violence being performed so near to them.

And what about the churches and synagogues, the civic groups, the schools and the charitable organizations of the towns where abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood ply their grisly trade? Where is the protest of abortion? Where is the outcry against the barbaric injustices perpetrated therein to preborn boys and girls?

But this was not their guilt, the citizens of Ohrdruf explained to the American soldiers. Yes, this concentration camp was in their town, but they had never come here before this. They hadn’t participated themselves in the bloody deeds. Therefore, the citizens maintain that they were, in fact, quite blameless.

Shouldn’t such a conclusion alarm us, at least to cause us to honestly, humbly consider why Christians are not motivated to…say, pray at those abortion businesses, even once in awhile? To lodge principled protests of these horrors to the powers that be? To support with time and treasure the critical work of pro-life pregnancy aid centers and others who are engaged against the culture of death? To work and give what’s necessary for genuine pro-life defenders to be elected to public office? To pray fervently and frequently for a holy redress of grievances?

Make no mistake, if the Church does not do these things, Christians in the West must accept their guilt of apathy and callousness and outright disloyalty to the Lord God Who warned them, “Deliver those who are being taken away to death, and those who are staggering to slaughter, O hold them back. If you say, ‘See, we did not know this,’ does He not consider it who weighs the hearts? And does He not know it who keeps your soul? And will He not render to man according to his work?” (Proverbs 24:11-12)

And “Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.” (Isaiah 1:17) And “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.” (Psalm 82:3) And “Thus says the Lord: Do justice and righteousness and deliver from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed. And do no wrong or violence to the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place.” (Jeremiah 22:3)

Of course, many, many more Scriptures are immediately relevant to this matter and you can survey those Scriptures at “Key Scripture Passages Relating to the Sanctity of Human Life” over at the website of Vital Signs Ministries. I encourage you to do so in order to best evaluate this exhortation.

Dear God, please help us to avoid the guilt of complicity, including the complicity of silence and lack of caring that has so shamefully marked the modern American church. Give us instead a new motivation to stand for righteousness. Give us courage and boldness and a deep desire to get out of our comfort zones and into Your will.

And Lord, please give us very specific directions in how we should improve our Christian service. How, for instance, should we be praying? Can we give more to Christ-honoring pregnancy centers and other pro-life ministries? How do we go about joining other Christians in prayer at an abortion business? What about those letter-writing parties that Vital Signs Ministries offers? For that matter, what about the action alerts promoted by pro-life, profamily organizations? And then there’s the annual March for Life, the Life Chain, the need to more enthusiastically support pro-life advocates running for public office, and the ongoing need to talk up pro-life issues to friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, and fellow church members.

Guys, we can do this. Unlike the people of Ohrdruf that had to be forced by foreign soldiers to look closely at the evil they had driven out of their minds, we can (by God’s ever-abounding grace) squarely face the facts…and then act wisely and winsomely to shine God’s truth abroad in our darkened culture. Indeed, the death camps are in our own cities and towns. But we can earnestly strive to be guiltless -- not by hunkering down in an illusory safety, not by ignoring what’s really happening, but by holding aloft the standards of His holiness, His truth, and His grace.

Kamala Harris & Abortion: The Short Take

A few days ago, the Omaha World-Herald published a quick note I had submitted to their "letters to the editor" column. They did so after a OWH staffer called me on the phone a few days earlier to have a "fact check" discussion regarding a couple of the points I had made. I very much appreciate their willingness to print the letter.

And for all of you who, like me, do not receive the paper, I print it below. Please make use of the information (reliably "fact-checked" as it is!) in conversations with friends, family, neighbors, and your liberal Aunt Giselda.

"A recurrent charge by Republicans is that the Democrat presidential nominee Kamala Harris doesn’t stand for anything. But, to be honest, on one point, she has been most remarkably clear and consistent. 1) She has refused to name a single limitation on abortion that she would support. 2) Harris led the way for the U.S. military to begin paying for abortions. 3) She boasted that she was “the first president or vice-president in history to visit a reproductive health clinic” and subsequently did so several times. 4) Harris praised Democrat Attorneys General who were working to shut down pregnancy resource centers. 5) As a senator, Harris voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. And 5) She has promised to make “abortion access” a central theme in her campaign. Oh no; Kamala Harris does stand – and stands strongly – on at least one political matter."

The Images That Break Your Heart

The video clips play on the television and you are strongly tempted to turn away because the topic is so tragic and the images so wrenchingly disturbing. But you watch and your heart is touched; your conscience is informed and challenged. You are seeing into the eyes of the victims -- innocent victims of man’s indifference, neglect, and even cruelty. The narrator urges you to take a good look at those in need and she then urges you to personally, immediately intervene to deliver them from further suffering, even from being destroyed out of a false sense of compassion.

The voice of the narrator, by the way, is a pleasant one for it belongs to a Hollywood celebrity. The sense of moral authority she portrays underscores for you how right and important it is to act in behalf of the innocent, to rescue the would-be victims from danger.  You are told that you can make a huge difference, that you can be a hero and a lifesaver, and that your action will enrich and ennoble your soul.  The video clip is a powerful piece and you are not surprised that the television station plays it often, unafraid of any charges of controversy, offense, or political bias. After all, the message is a critically necessary one; it is a message that the whole culture must heed if it truly aspires to be moral and kind and compassionate.

The video clips I’m talking about, as you might not have guessed, are those created by such groups as the Society for the Protection of Animals, the Humane Society, and so on.  They are run free of charge by television stations under the banner of public service and charity.  They are applauded by progressives of all sorts.

And yet, these same progressives, these same public service committees, these same television stations categorically refuse any announcement that would apply the same methods, the same reasoning, or the same emotional triggers towards action that might save human boys and girls from the wicked cruelty of abortion. Does that make sense?  No.  Is that fair?  No.  Do the so-called progressives not see the horrible irony of treating the plight of animals in shelters to be a greater moral responsibility than the fate of human children scheduled to be torn to pieces or poisoned by abortionists? Sadly, the answer again is, no.

And thus goes the terrible devolution of American culture.

(Postscript -- I have no problems with appeals for kindness to animals. Indeed, men and women are presented with a biblical responsibility to show wisdom and compassion as they serve as God's stewards over all of creation. Remember, for instance, the Sabbath rest that God commanded extended to animals as well as men. My point is a simple but profound one; namely, that Western culture has got its priorities completely turned round. Our refusal to protect preborn children, while yet posing as kind-hearted, is irrational, ugly, and evil.)
