Last week I posted an Action Alert item about the proposed change in the City of Omaha's policies, "Will Omaha Protect 'Sexual Orientation' and 'Gender Expression' as Civil Rights?"
It's received quite a bit of attention and, as the e-mail pile indicates, it has been attached or linked to the e-mail lists of several Christian activists around town. That's great...but only if it is helping generate a lot of courteous, principled protests of this proposal.
So, let's keep it up because: 1) we don't have much time; 2) the stakes are very high; and 3) the post-Sigerson City Council is proving to be a disaster for our community. Citizens who yet care about the moral and economic health of Omaha must make clear to the Council how dramatically unpopular with the citizens are outrageous new taxes, adding "gender expression" as a special politically empowered class, refusing to act on the increasing prostitution traffic occurring under the banner of "escort" and "massage" services (salaciously advertised in the Yellow Pages), and refusing to act upon the illegality of "adult" shops in the Old Market and elsewhere.
The City Council dares to refuse CVS the right to build a pharmacy but nonchalantly allows sex shops to operate in Omaha's most important tourist area. This is responsible civic government?
Of course not. So I encourage you again to contact your City Council member and the Mayor of Omaha as soon as possible to let them know your opinions about the proposed change in determining that "sexual orientation" and "gender expression" deserve the same legal status as race or religion. And while you're at it, let them know your disappointment with their other actions -- and lack thereof.
If you've already contacted them -- great; now do so again. And then suggest to your friends, neighbors and church members they do the same. And quickly.
