The Education System Is Failing America

...Even the smart kids at Harvard failed the test, scoring on average 69, which is a D. Since the vast majority of the students tested are products of public schools, the results represent a comprehensive indictment of public education, the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers.

These are the people who year after year graduate classes in which one of every four kids cannot read at even a basic level. If you can't read the Constitution, or the Declaration, or The Federalist Papers, you won't understand their essential concepts or why they represent so much wisdom.

When even our elite colleges and universities aren't teaching the next generation the basic concepts of the American republic like federalism or the difference between Thomas Jefferson and Karl Marx, it ought to be obvious that American public education is failing American democracy.

Does anybody on America's college faculties remember or care that once liberty is lost, it is almost never regained?

Rather Than Obey Sanitation Laws, Abortionist Closes Down

A telling story from the "Do Abortionists Really Care About Women?" file.

When Pennsylvania began inspecting abortion clinics again (after years of neglecting to enforce basic health and sanitation laws...and only after a change in governors...and only after the unspeakable crimes of Dr. Kermit Gosnell's abortion mill were exposed to the public), two abortion clinics run by Soleiman M. Soli were found to contain their own horrors.

The inspections showed conditions in these two clinics were so bad they were ordered to close until such time as the problems were fixed. Those problems included drugs that were decades out of date (decades!) being given to women, lousy equipment, dirty equipment, lousy record keeping, and a highly dangerous mishandling of fetal tissue, In addition, life-saving resuscitation equipment required by law was completely missing. And when asked by inspectors to demonstrate how to work the oxygen tank, it took Dr. Soli and one of his secretaries 10 minutes to figure it out!

But when faced with the necessity to "clean up" his abortion business; that is, to simply provide qualified personnel, efficient equipment and an operating space that was sanitary, Dr. Soli decided it would be too expensive and require too much hassle. So, proving that profits had always trumped proper respect and concern for his patients, he closed down the abortion clinics.

How many other abortionists around the country are running dirty shops that not only kill preborn children but also endanger their paying customers? You know there are plenty. So why do state inspectors and state attorneys general and investigative reporters continue to avert their eyes? Indeed, why does Planned Parenthood and other abortion organizations continue to work against laws that would merely require a strict observance by abortionists to safe conditions?

The answer, of course, is because abortionists and the supporters of that violent, exploitative industry do not really care for women at all. They care about money.

Now This Is Moral Responsibility. This Is Fiscal Leadership.

Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Jordan is voting AGAINST the 3-week spending bill unveiled in the House last Friday. Why? Because it is merely a delay game that refuses to defund ObamaCare, refuses to defund Planned Parenthood and NPR, that refuses to get down to enacting the very things Republicans have promised to work for.

The 3-week spending bill is nothing but a loaded, bloated compromise with Democrats who continue to close their eyes to the desperate condition America is in.

When are Republicans going to start standing up to foot-dragging Dems?

Thank you, Congressman Jordan, for doing the right thing.

“Americans sent us here to deal with big problems in bold ways. We’re borrowing billions of dollars a day, yet Senate Democrats have done little more than wring their hands for the last month. With the federal government facing record deficits and a mammoth debt hanging over our economy and our future, we must do more than cut spending in bite-sized pieces.

“Democrats control both the Senate and the White House, and it’s time they stopped dithering. We need swift action to deal with spending for the rest of this year. We need to stop sending taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood, and we need to defund ObamaCare. And we need to start tackling next year’s budget, the debt-ceiling, and other challenges standing in the way of job creation. We've made some solid first downs on spending. Now it's time to look to the end zone.”

Please forward this post to your own Congressman and Senators, asking them to follow the principles of this genuine conservative leader.

Uneducated in the Scriptures, Young Evangelicals Are Opting for Socialism

The headline of this intriguing OneNewsNow story reads, "Young evangelicals high on social issues, but lean toward socialism."

This is yet another tragedy caused by modern evangelical churches (Roman Catholic and Orthodox should certainly pay attention too) who stopped teaching the Bible to their congregants, loading them up instead with self-help tips, lessons from big business consultants, and greeting card sentiments.

That irresponsibility opens up a Pandora's Box of confusions, errors and outright heresies. Like socialism. So check out the corrective offered by Ryan Messmore of The Heritage Foundation and  James Rose of the American Christian History Institute.

Messmore: "What we found is that a lot of young evangelicals have a good passion about caring for people in need and we want to say 'Amen' to that passion. The problem is that that passion is often directed in bad policy initiatives and approaches."

Messmore says many young evangelicals interpret God's call to help those in need as providing more government assistance and redistribution of wealth from the rich to the poor."What we're trying to argue is that if you really care about poverty, if you really understand what poverty is, it's not just material in nature," he says. "It's not just a lack of money or finances that the government can come along and meet. Given who we are as human beings, we have a wide range of needs -- and a true approach to helping people in need takes into account all of those approaches."...

Historian James Rose says socialism is an "unbiblical" idea of man and government that has become very popular with many Americans. Rose, founder of the American Christian History Institute, says many Americans are welcoming European-type socialism as a model for the United States. Rose points to the biblical story of Israel when the nation cried out for a king to rule over them instead of God. When God responded to their request, he told them their king would "take" from them all that they had -- an early example of socialism, Rose suggests.

"Socialism is a false, deceitful view of man and government. It seeks to do things to people while it undermines individual responsibility and private capital," he explains. "This view of man and government appears to offer safety and security and to supply our needs and wants, [but in fact] it makes the individual more and more dependent on public policy and less and less able to be independent and self-governing."

The Institute's president explains that socialism "thrives" when people are afraid and insecure. He points out that the consequences of the system are more government control, less independence, more public property, less private property, more taxes and fees, and less saving. In contrast, Rose says that the character of self-government is productivity, diligence, and more local care with less national control.

TSA Machines Show Radiation Levels 10X Higher Than Claimed

The Transportation Safety Administration (the dreaded TSA that has made groping, see-through cameras, and gross insensitivity to personal privacy and dignity a staple of your airport experience) does not want the public to know this.

In recent tests at least 247 of their scanning machines showed radiation levels 10 times higher than expected.

Hmm. The TSA demands to see everything you've got. But there's no trade off here. For the TSA definitely wants to keep you from seeing what they've got, especially their arrogance, their inefficiency and their endangerment of air travelers via extensive radiation.

The exposure (pun intended) of the TSA machines' radiation levels came only after USA Today joined with Republican lawmakers in demanding results of TSA reviews that started last December. Another example of Team Obama's lack of transparency.

But when the first reports of those reviews were handed over, a TSA spokesman admitted that about a third of them showed "some sort of error." No problem, the TSA insists; it's just a little matter of retraining folks.

Funny how this matter of retraining the menials is becoming a standard defense of liberal inefficiency and even corruption. For instance, Planned Parenthood is using the same dodge regarding all those video tapes showing the mega-abortion business covering up statutory rape and other crimes.

Thankfully, at least some legislators aren't buying into TSA's casual dismissal of these tardy and error-filled reports. Republican Susan Collins of Maine and Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz from Utah are among them. Says Collins, the TSA "has repeatedly assured me that the machines that emit radiation do not pose a health risk. Nonetheless, if TSA contractors reporting on the radiation levels have done such a poor job, how can airline passengers and crew have confidence in the data used by the TSA to reassure the public?"

She said the records released Friday "included gross errors about radiation emissions. That is completely unacceptable when it comes to monitoring radiation."

Chaffetz is also bothered. "At best, Chaffetz said, the radiation reports generated by TSA contractors reveal haphazard oversight and record-keeping in the critical inspection system the agency relies upon to ensure millions of travelers aren't subjected to excessive doses of radiation."

"It is totally unacceptable to be bumbling such critical tasks," Chaffetz said. "These people are supposed to be protecting us against terrorists."

Here's more in this USA Today story.

This Is Protest? Murdering Children in Their Beds?

Uh, about that "religion of peace" and the justice of Palestinian protest -- tell it to the policemen who encountered this horrific scene this weekend.

A terrorist infiltrated the West Bank settlement of Itamar, southeast of Nablus, early Saturday and stabbed five family members to death. The shocking attack occurred around 1 am as the terrorist entered the family home and murdered three children aged 11, 3, and a baby girl along with their parents. The victims were apparently sleeping as the killer came in...

The terrorist who carried out the massacre cut the fence surrounding Itamar and entered the home of the victims through the window, an initial probe of the murder showed. Authorities could not immediately discount the possibility that more than one attacker was involved in the murder...

“When rescue forces entered the house they encountered a very difficult sight...There were five people there who were hurt. We could do nothing but pronounce them dead,” he said.

Paramedic Kabaha Muayua was among the first responders at the site and described the horrific scene he encountered. “We could not help the first four stab victims. Following an inspection of the scene I spotted an infant of about three who still had a pulse. We engaged in lengthy resuscitation efforts but had to pronounce him dead,” he said. “The murder scene was shocking. Kids’ toys right next to pools of blood.”...

Yesha Council Chairman Danny Dayan, who arrived at the site, appeared shocked by the brutal attack. “This is no doubt one of the most terrible attacks in recent years," he told the reporters on hand. “Words cannot describe the extent of the horror and pain,” he said. “Those tempted to think that the Palestinians ceased their acts of murder see that they do not shy away from any tactic and any Jewish victims, regardless of how young they are.”

Dreams of My Chairman: Obama's Envy of China's Dictatorship

Last Friday's Vital Signs post about President Obama's latest whining seemed to hit the spot with an awful lot of folks. If you were one of them, you'll find Michael Goodwin's New York Post article a good read too.

First I did a double take. He said what? I read it again and the shock waves followed.

A beleaguered President Obama has told aides it would be so much easier to be the president of China, The New York Times reports.

There are two ways to read the remark, which is attributed to anonymous aides. One is that Obama resents the burden of global leadership that comes with the American presidency. The other is that he longs for an authoritarian system, where he need tolerate no dissent.

Under either or both interpretations, his confession carries a dose of self-pity that means Obama has hit a wall.

He is in over his head, and he knows it...

Joni Eareckson Tada's Cancer Battle: An Encouraging Update

Here's a message from Ken Tada and Joni Eareckson Tada that will help brighten up your weekend. And it's not just because they have some good news to report about Joni's struggle with cancer but also because they have a moving exhortation to us about pressing on to the upward calling of Jesus Christ.

Obama Expresses His Envy of Communist Dictator

The New York Times reports that Barack Obama, dithering over what to say and do about Libya, " has told people that it would be so much easier to be the president of China. As one official put it, 'No one is scrutinizing Hu Jintao’s words in Tahrir Square.'"

This is absolutely amazing. Barack Obama is an American President who has failed to stand up for American interests, who began his tenure with international "apology tours," who has repeatedly dissed our democratic allies while bowing to kings and sheiks, who has praised dictators while ignoring his responsibilities to champion human rights, and who has served as a model of cowardly appeasement as foreign countries buy up America.

And now he's whining to his staff that he envies Hu Jintao because the Communist dictator doesn't have to worry about the press, an opposition party, or the expectations of people across the globe -- people who naturally expect America's president to stand up for justice and freedom.

There is so much in Obama's complaint that is disheartening, so much that reveals how different are the capabilities and the character of this president than all others who have gone before (including even the hapless egotist Jimmy Carter) that I can only say one thing.

I wish Barack Obama was the president of China too.

About That "Outbreak of Freedom" in the Middle East...What About Religious Freedom?

It's way past time for a reality check regarding the "outbreak of freedom" in the Middle East that much of the media is hailing. The most basic question, of course, "Does this new passion include religious liberties as well?"

Hardly.

Here's an excerpt from a superb essay published by the Huffington Post and written by Ken Blackwell and Bob Morrison:

...Now, we are told, democracy is on the rise in the Middle East. It was fashionable some years ago to say that doubting the prospects for democracy in the Middle East was an example of "the soft bigotry of low expectations." So let us state, for the record, that no racial or ethnic group is incapable of democracy or unworthy of liberty. That doesn't mean the Middle East is going to be free anytime soon.

Let's start with religious liberty. Twenty years ago, Rothman and Lichter did a seminal study of the media elites. They found that more than 90% of top journalists never attend a religious service of any kind. As CNN's Bill Schneider acknowledged, the media doesn't "get religion."

So, if religion is not important to them, does that mean journalists cannot understand its importance to others? It shouldn't. Harvard's great scholar Perry Miller understood the Puritans better, perhaps, than any professor at any American university. But Miller himself was an atheist.

Still, the democracy boosters seem blissfully unaware that 84% of Egyptians say anyone who departs from Islam should be killed. This is a killer stat. It means, bluntly, that Egyptians are not going to see political liberty any time soon. And there is a real danger they will come under the sway of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Democracy is not just a matter of voting and showing off purple fingers. Respect for religious differences must come before anyone can accept the right of a neighbor to hold different opinions on political and social matters.

Democracy requires not only religious liberty, but representative institutions, a vibrant civil society, respect for property rights, the rule of law, and a free and open press. The Middle East has no history of these building blocks of democracy...

Are All Religions Equally Culpable for Terrorism?

Do you lie awake at night wondering when the next Tao train bombing will be? Do you worry about Buddhists, Jains or Hindus sending airplanes into buildings or blowing up schools? Are you waiting for the next terror attack led by Zorastrians, Shintos or Presbyterans?

Of course not. But that's just what President Obama's Deputy National Security Advisor, Denis McDonough, would have you believe. McDonough's recent claim (made to an audience at the Islamic ADAMS Center in Sterling, Virginia, a place that has been raided by the FBI for its suspected links to terrorism) is that members of many different religions “succumb to terrorist ideologies.”

Don't you see? It's every preacher's problem -- how to keep the folks in the pews instead of going out and throwing Molotov cocktails into supermarkets.

No, the last thing this administration wants to admit is the thing that every sane person on the planet understands; that is, that the huge, horrific and ongoing terror threat facing the West comes from a jihad-centered Islam. And since they cannot deny that completely, they try to protect the reputation of Islam by spreading the blame to all religions.

Warner Todd Huston has a terrific piece on this subject here at his blog, Publius' Forum.

While ESCR Fails, Adult Stem Cell Medicine Continues to Succeed

Over at Secondhand Smoke, Wesley J. Smith points readers to another in a long and wonderful series of medical success stories involving adult stem cells. In this particular case, the technique involved "rebuilding" the urethra of teenage boys using their own stem cells.

The boys were ages 10 to 14 at the time of the surgery. Three were accident victims, and the other two had suffered failures of traditional urethra grafts. The researchers removed small sections of the boys’ bladders, about half the size of a postage stamp, and separated out two kinds of cells: smooth muscle cells for the exterior of the tube and a type of cell that lines various tubular structures in the body, including the urethra and blood vessels. These were multiplied in a lab for a few weeks.

The researchers then used “scaffolding” made of a mesh rolled into tubes the size of the urethra they wanted to create. They applied smooth muscle cells to the outside of the mesh and the liner cells to the inside, and then incubated them for about a week to grow the tissue. The mesh, Atala said, is eventually absorbed into the tissue. The sections were then implanted in the boys at the Federico Gomez Children’s Hospital in Mexico City, the first in 2004 and the last in 2007. The boys report high levels of satisfaction, and tests show that the engineered tissue is still functioning properly.

Smith concludes, "With all the sturm and drang over ESCR and human cloning, it is beneficial to remember that much of regenerative medicine is utterly uncontroversial."

A Wifeless Wednesday

Claire was called for jury duty yesterday but, as these things are wont to go, she ended up being passed over. That's what being a pro-life activist (with a few arrests for peaceful protest at abortion mills), a co-founder of a crisis pregnancy center and the wife of an evangelical pastor gets you in post-Christian, post-rational America -- you're not wanted to weigh evidence, make moral judgments, or pass sentence in a criminal case.

Oh well, she found it interesting seeing how the system...uh...works.

Because I figured she would be dismissed pretty quick, I hung around downtown in order to pick her up. I was wrong. It took them 6 hours to decide they didn't want her. When I've been called, the system has spit me out in a matter of minutes. I've never even had time to go into the Alice's Restaurant routine I've dreamed of. Bummer. (The Alice's Restaurant reference, by the way, is solely for the former flower children reading. The rest of you just go on.)

Anyhow, I sat at the Panera's drinking decaf for three hours. I went over the agenda for the Vital Signs Board meeting this weekend and then composed most of this month's LifeSharer letter. But having a presentation of "When Swing Was King" early in the afternoon, I finally had to book it out west and pack up.

I had never attempted a "When Swing Was King" program by myself. My bit is to do the sound, the narration, the screen, the preliminary music, the "blacking" of windows and the conversation with the residents. Claire visits too, of course, but she also handles all of the skill stuff: the Power Point program on her computer, the projector connections and alignment, and the various connections that keep all these things "talking" to one another and to the power source. She had taken me through the paces the night before so I could handle her part too. But it was still awfully daunting.

But I did have a few things going for me. Her prayers were very important; so too was the generous and warm-hearted welcome we always get at this particular facility. And then there was the delight of having 4 members of Faith Bible Church show up! Alan & Cindy & Paul & Harriet were on hand to offer moral support and much more. They visited with the residents. They covered the windows so the images could be better seen on the screen. And then Alan operated the Power Point. It was a wonderful testimony to the staff and residents for our church. And it was certainly a tremendous help to me. Thanks a million, guys.

There was only one small glitch -- just another of the trials of my wifeless Wednesday. Claire's sister called on the cell phone during the program. I got the phone out of my pocket pretty quick but there was another problem when I opened it. You see, earlier in the morning I had somehow turned on the speaker phone and I didn't have a clue as to how to get it back to normal. Without Claire, I'm absolutely helpless with this kind of thing. Anyhow, I made a dash for the door to keep Peg's voice from drowning out the song that was playing. And the song that was up at that very moment? I kid you not -- The Ink Spots singing "Ring, Telphone Ring!"

The unscripted comedy was one of the afternoon's highlights for the 18 people present.

Claire found out a little before two that she wasn't going to be picked for jury duty after all. So she waited patiently with Jeff Shaara's Gone for Soldiers book until I could get down and collect her around 3:20. We then had a most enjoyable early dinner with the Nelsons at a health food place we all enjoy -- Five Guys Burgers and Fries. A couple of hours conversation about the Faith, friendship, ministry, church matters, Vital Signs, flowers (Alan sells them), and Claire's experience with the system that day was a great way to get things back to normal.

And it sure was nice to have Claire back.

Planned Parenthood Keeps Getting Busted. But Does the Media Notice. Do the Politicians Care?

Planned Parenthood has been misleading Congress and American taxpayers for many years. I know -- I was part of the deception. For eight years I worked at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas, and for two of those years I was the clinic's director.

Here are the ways Planned Parenthood is deceiving the public -- and taxpayers -- about what it does...

Let Abby Johnson give you the straight skinny -- great information that you can then pass on to the ones who most need to know. C'mon, guys; let's make the very most of Abby's conversion from Planned Parenthood. The babies, the mothers, and the cause of justice deserve no less.

Economic Di$a$ter: Every Third Paycheck is Welfare

In the school days of my misspent youth, I was always lousy in math. But even I can figure out these numbers.

Government payouts -- including Social Security, Medicare and unemployment insurance -- make up more than a third of total wages and salaries of the U.S. population, a record figure that will only increase if action isn’t taken before the majority of Baby Boomers enter retirement...

The economist [Madeline Schnapp, director of Macroeconomic Research at TrimTabs] gives the country two stark choices. In order to get welfare back to its pre-recession ratio of 26 percent of pay, “either wages and salaries would have to increase $2.3 trillion, or 35 percent, to $8.8 trillion, or social welfare benefits would have to decline $500 billion, or 23 percent, to $1.7 trillion,” she said...

Only this year has the first round of baby boomers begun collecting Medicare benefits—and here comes 78 million more.

Social welfare benefits have increased by $514 billion over the last two years...

Stop Planned Parenthood from Endangering America's Daughters

The Nanny State Goes Microcosmic

One of the most stimulating and delightful discoveries of my time on Facebook has been the writing of Jack Niewold. For whether it has been his provocative book, Frail Web of Intention, or the punchy paragraphs he pens for his social network, I've found him wise, witty and consistently effective.

I think you will too. So read his latest essay for Facebook below and then go "Friend" him so that you can follow his muse regularly.

I see that a New York city teenager has been arrested for killing the hamster of a younger sibling (no genders were given). The kid faces two years in prison. After Victor Davis Hanson, I would call the speed with which this case was pursued an instance of the “Bloomberg syndrome.” The Bloomberg syndrome, which I think we can appropriately shorten to “BS,” refers to the tendency of public figures who can’t govern their own cities, states or countries to go either cosmic or microcosmic. It’s as though life on middle earth, where the rest of us live, is too difficult, or too boring, for these superior types.

In this case, a city government that can’t track down billions of dollars in waste is right there when it comes to sixteen-year-olds who mistreat family pets. That’s the microcosmic end of it. Conversely, the failed governorship of Arnold Schwarzenegger is admired as a grand effort of green energy and progressive social issues. Never mind the 13% unemployment, uncontrolled illegal immigration, and the closing down of some of the state’s seminal industries.

Bloomberg, who couldn’t manage to get the streets of NYC cleared of snow after the recent storms, still pontificates over fatty foods and second-hand smoke. Now he’s got a new notch in his belt, avenger of animal cruelty. Even Harry Reid is affected by this flight from job description; as the country stagnates and debt mounts to ever more inconceivable levels, he obsesses over whether ending funding to NPR will mean that cowboy poets will disappear.

Honestly, the Democrat Party seems to be the home of Dickens' Pecksniffs. The bunch that once wanted us top stay out of their bedrooms now wants you to stay out of McDonalds.

For liberals, when you fail at your core responsibilities, escalating or attenuating your pronouncements two or three orders of magnitude is imagined to make everything all right again. A sycophantic media culture is usually only too happy to play along with this. If Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin stops dealing with the very real issues of the state budget, and begins to crack down on plastic water bottles, maybe he’ll finally be popular with the teachers’ unions.

Ozzie and Harriet Do Not Live Here Anymore: ABC's "Good Christian Bitches" in the Works

The devolution (no, make that degradation) of American culture continues.

Today, the Parents Television Council called for members and concerned citizens to take action against Disney-owned ABC by signing a petition to protest the offensive title of its pilot, “Good Christian Bitches.”

“ABC’s decision is not only an affront to women, it blatantly attacks the world’s largest faith. The ‘B-word’ is toxic and is used to degrade, abuse, harass, bully and humiliate women. And the ‘Christian’ element only adds insult to injury. Regardless of whether the title ultimately makes it to broadcast, ABC has publicly proclaimed its values and it has tarnished the Disney brand,” said PTC President Tim Winter.

“Would ABC even consider another faith to denigrate?  Would they even consider a program title or a plot line based on ‘Bitches’ who were Muslim, Hindu, Jewish or Buddhist? I suspect not, and I certainly hope not.  So why the double standard?

“Unfortunately, this show is just one example of a larger trend. ABC already pounced on another pilot titled ‘Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23.’ From Investigation Discovery’s ‘Who the [Bleep] Did I Marry?’ to CBS’ ‘$#*! My Dad Says,’ it’s clear the pattern will continue unless Americans speak out and advertisers come to their senses.

“This is the latest strike in what appears to be a concerted effort to popularize profanity on network television. On prime time broadcast TV, use of the b-word alone increased from 431 instances in 1998 to 1,277 in 2007.

“Unless or until ABC realizes that its decision about ‘Good Christian Bitches’ was misguided, PTC will use every method at its disposal to turn advertisers and viewers away from a provocative title that compromises respect for both women and Christians in an attempt to draw ratings,” Winter concluded.

On Obama's Watch, Gas Prices Up 67%

When Barack Obama took the helm in January of 2009, gasoline was selling at less than $2 a gallon. The costs have soared an amazing 67% since then.

Here's 4 observations about this phenomena. 1) The price of oil continues to soar under Obama's failed presidency.

2) It's been established by NewsBusters that the media connected higher gas prices to George W. Bush 16 times more than they have to Obama. This despite the much higher prices under Obama's tenure.

3) Even in view of how terribly Americans are being effected by enormous gas prices, Barack Obama refuses to allow petroleum companies to go get the oil that we (not the Saudis or Chavez) already have access to!

And 4) Yesterday it cost me $61 to fill my tank. And, because of Obama's disastrous policies (no drilling, incompetence in dealing with the Middle East, etc.), there's no relief in sight.

Indeed, it could get even worse real quick. Remember, President Obama's Secretary of the Interior once said he didn't mind if gasoline hit $10 a gallon.

Unbelievable. If a President was deliberately trying to destroy the American economy, he couldn't do a more complete job than what Barack Obama is doing.

Planned Parenthood: Where Are the Missing Millions of Our Tax Dollars?

A new report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) on federal tax money funneled into Planned Parenthood and similar organizations raises more questions than it answers about the nation’s largest abortion chain.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s (PPFA) audits show the organization spent just $657.1 million between 2002 and 2008 from federal government grants and programs, but the abortion behemoth’s own annual reports show that it took in $2.3 billion from government grants and programs during the same time period.

That’s not pocket change. Why the discrepancy?

The report (the first of its kind since 2002) was released in response to a request from 31 U.S. senators and representatives and in an atmosphere increasingly hostile to abortion. Not surprisingly. then, its findings are fueling an escalating outcry to defund Planned Parenthood.

Since 2009, at least five nationwide polls have confirmed that a majority of Americans consider themselves pro-life.

Someone, then, needs to explain to all those people why $2.3 billion in tax dollars have been doled out to an organization that admits to systematically having killed more than 1.8 million pre-born babies between 2002 and 2008 and then reports it only spent $657.1 million in federal dollars.

Has Planned Parenthood managed to tuck away megamillions of our tax dollars, seemingly unnoticed? Or is that much of its government funding coming from sources other than the federal government? Or is there a problem with the way Planned Parenthood is reporting its expenditure of our federal monies?...

Read more of Rita Diller's Washington Times report here. Read it and then forward it to your Congressmen and Senators. Maybe write a personal letter, e-mail or make a call and include a couple of the points from the news story. Tell them to defund Planned Parenthood now. No excuses. No delays. Get it done.

Wow Alert! National Public Radio Gets Busted!

In a remarkable bit of undercover film, NPR gets royally busted as an elitist and extremely biased media source. Big surprise, huh?

The video clip "stars" Ron Schiller, President of the NPR Foundation and Senior Vice-President of National Public Radio, having a luncheon with two men whom he believes are members of a Muslim Brotherhood front group and who are ready to donate a few million dollars to NPR coffers. Also present is Betsy Liley, Senior Director of NPR's Institutional Giving.

But it is Schiller whose remarks are the most shocking -- even to those conservatives who are aware of NPR's longtime liberal slant. Indeed, what this fellow says about Americans, Jews, Christians, the need for an educated elite, Republicans, the Tea Party, and more will curl the hair of liberals too. For liberals may be used to saying these kinds of things among themselves. But they loathe it when their true opinions get a public airing like they do here.

Of course, you'll see that Schiller's lines are the most laughable when he starts dissing Juan Williams. Schiller explains that NPR's "feeling is that if a person expresses his or her opinion...they are compromised as a journalist. They can no longer fairly report." Well, watch the tape and you'll hear Schiller express views that are more sinister, more despicable and more offensive to more persons than anything Juan Williams ever dreamed of saying.

You've got to pass this one around. And, as you do, also pass along your hope that people will contact their Congressmen and Senators with a demand that the taxpayer funding of NPR be ended ASAP. If there was ever any doubt of the extreme leftist bias of NPR, it's certainly been exposed now.

Democrat Leaders Denounce ObamaCare...But They Support It Nevertheless!

The Community Living Assistance Services and Support Act (called, with unintended irony, the CLASS Act) is a humongous entitlement program representing just a bit of the waste, fraud and irresponsible spending that is packed into Obamacare. It's a very bad deal, a graceless bit of fraud that promises care to America's senior citizens that it just can't deliver.

Even the Dems see through it. And they're saying so.

But that doesn't mean they're confessing any wrongdoing about forcing this convoluted and massively expensive mess onto the shoulders of working Americans. No, indeed. These Democrats remain as devoted to ObamaCare as ever.

Here's an example: North Dakota's Democrat Senator Kent Conrad called the CLASS Act “a Ponzi scheme of the first order, the kind of thing that Bernie Madoff would have been proud of.” And then Conrad turned right around and voted for it! It was a move that prompted Barack Obama's cousin Dr. Milton Wolf to quip, "I suspect Bernie Madoff would be proud of Kent Conrad."

Similarly wacky moves have been made by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius who admitted to a Senate Finance Committee last week that the CLASS Act was “totally unsustainable.” But she still wants it.

Mrs. Sebelius agrees with the Medicare chief actuary that the program “is at a significant risk for failure” with or without the accounting gimmick but - channeling the spirit of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez - she claims the law gives her “administrative flexibility” to bypass Congress and the American voters and rewrite the law to her liking. Such power.

In separate testimony last week, the HHS secretary admitted to double-counting Obamacare’s cooked books. The question posed was whether a $500 billion cut in Medicare should be counted toward preserving Medicare or funding the new law. Her own actuary previously acknowledged they must choose one or the other. Mrs. Sebelius‘ reply? “Both.”

I suggest you read the whole of Dr. Wolf's penetrating op/ed column, one that effectively debunks the administration's desperate myths about the boondoggle that is ObamaCare. It's actually a quite hopeful article and it's right here in the Washington Times.

"When Swing Was King" Is on the Road Again!

"When Swing Was King," Vital Signs Ministries' program for nursing homes and retirement centers continues as strong as ever. We've already presented Volume 9 twice last week with great success. There's another this afternoon and several more scheduled throughout the month.

Volume 9, like all of the others, brings together 13 terrific songs from the big band era with a Power Point visual show and an entertaining commentary related to the sights and sounds of the program. "When Swing Was King" thus provides for the seniors a wealth of pleasant experiences: the great music of their youth, memories, visual and audio stimulation to combat the tedium of nursing home life, stories with humor and human interest, opportunities for conversation, and the development of new friendships.

We remain delighted and inspired by the ministry "When Swing Was King' has created. And we once again invite you to come along for the fun.

The specific lineup for Volume 9? Here it is.

Glenn Miller Orchestra: "American Patrol"
Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Frank Sinatra, the Pied Pipers: "Street of Dreams"
Shep Fields Orchestra: "Lavender Blue"
Duke Ellington Orchestra: "Five O'Clock Whistle"
Vaughn Monroe & Orchestra: "Tangerine"

Sight and Salvation: The Faith of Bartimaeus

Related to a niece's prayer request for a retreat in which she is participating, I was thinking this morning about Bartimaeus (Matthew 20, Mark 10, Luke 18).

"Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me." When Bartimaeus cried out to Jesus, he didn't appeal to a mere teacher or rabbi. He used the Messianic title, "Son of David." The poor beggar who wasn't able to see could nevertheless hear. And the news about Jesus had reached him long before this momentous day. He had heard of Christ's miracles, His wisdom, and his offer of mercy to those who received Him as Savior. These were the things, promised long ago in the Scriptures, that would authenticate God's gift to man of the Messiah. And so Bartimaeus believed before Jesus even approached his city.

Therefore, Bartimaeus wasn't seeking from Jesus what he asked of others passing by. He didn't seek alms. No, he wanted to see and he was confident that Jesus (and Jesus only) could deliver this unprecedented miracle. This is why he was persistent and confident in his approach to Christ. He knew Jesus could heal him. Indeed, as the true Son of David, as the long-awaited Messiah, Bartimaeus knew that Jesus could provide something even more crucial; namely, salvation from the penalty of sin. It is why he followed Jesus after his eyes were opened. For Jesus had cured not only his blindness but had accepted his faith and made him one of His own.

The Suicide of the West: Christianity Is Being Eradicated

It’s official: Britain is no longer a Christian nation. In banning Eunice and Owen Johns, a devout Christian couple, from fostering children, Lord Justice Munby and Mr Justice Beatson declared that we live in a secular state, and that the Johns’ religious convictions disqualified them from raising citizens of that state. We’ve outgrown Christianity, the judges professed. Instead, we have graduated to the status of a multicultural nation, blessed by a plurality of faiths.

Commenting on the sad case mentioned here last week, Cristina Odone at the Telegraph pens a must-read article.

So it is not just Christians that the ruling in the Johns case will alarm and unsettle. As the judges wagged their fingers about the secularist principles that, they claim, define the nation (and which “ought to be, but seemingly are not, well understood”), they were not describing the status quo: a strong majority of Britons still consider themselves to be Christian. Instead, they were making clear their desire to steer this country in a direction of their own choosing – one that matches the views of an increasingly strident group that is determined to scrub Christianity from public life.

Its efforts to push the majority faith underground are evident everywhere, from our bus stops to our workplaces. The British Humanist Association is campaigning to discourage “cultural Christians” from identifying themselves as believers in the forthcoming census. Jo Johnson, a Tory MP, wants to drop the prayer that traditionally opens Parliamentary sessions. Companies like BA forbid their Christian staff from wearing crosses to work. Schools and offices present Christian holidays as secular breaks. And now devout Christians are to be prevented from becoming foster parents.

According to our learned judges, “the aphorism that ‘Christianity is part of the common law of England’ is now mere rhetoric”. How excruciatingly unjust.

America Is Surrendering the High Seas

Mark Helprin has a very frightening article here in the Wall Street Journal -- an article that explains not only why the U.S. response to high seas piracy has been so pathetic but what greater dangers now threaten us from the oceans we once controlled.

...Up to 30 ships, the largest ever constructed, each capable of carrying 18,000 containers, will soon come off the ways in South Korea. Not only will we neither build, own, nor man them, they won't even call at our ports, which are not large enough to receive them. We are no longer exactly the gem of the ocean. Next in line for gratuitous abdication is our naval position.

Separated by the oceans from sources of raw materials in the Middle East, Africa, Australia and South America, and from markets and manufacture in Europe, East Asia and India, we are in effect an island nation. Because 95% and 90% respectively of U.S. and world foreign trade moves by sea, maritime interdiction is the quickest route to both the strangulation of any given nation and chaos in the international system. First Britain and then the U.S. have been the guarantors of the open oceans. The nature of this task demands a large blue-water fleet that simply cannot be abridged.

With the loss of a large number of important bases world-wide, if and when the U.S. projects military power it must do so most of the time from its own territory or the sea. Immune to political cross-currents, economically able to cover multiple areas, hypoallergenic to restive populations, and safe from insurgencies, the fleets are instruments of undeniable utility in support of allies and response to aggression. Forty percent of the world's population lives within range of modern naval gunfire, and more than two-thirds within easy reach of carrier aircraft. Nothing is better or safer than naval power and presence to preserve the often fragile reticence among nations, to protect American interests and those of our allies, and to prevent the wars attendant to imbalances of power and unrestrained adventurism.

And yet the fleet has been made to wither even in time of war. We have the smallest navy in almost a century, declining in the past 50 years to 286 from 1,000 principal combatants. Apologists may cite typical postwar diminutions, but the ongoing 17% reduction from 1998 to the present applies to a navy that unlike its wartime predecessors was not previously built up. These are reductions upon reductions. Nor can there be comfort in the fact that modern ships are more capable, for so are the ships of potential opponents. And even if the capacity of a whole navy could be packed into a small number of super ships, they could be in only a limited number of places at a time, and the loss of just a few of them would be catastrophic.

The overall effect of recent erosions is illustrated by the fact that 60 ships were commonly underway in America's seaward approaches in 1998, but today—despite opportunities for the infiltration of terrorists, the potential of weapons of mass destruction, and the ability of rogue nations to sea-launch intermediate and short-range ballistic missiles—there are only 20...

Liberal, Pro-Choice Pundit Calls for De-Funding of Planned Parenthood

Yes, you read that headline right.

Kirsten Powers worked in the Clinton Administration for 5 years and has gone on to write for the New York Post and many other mainstream newspapers and magazines. You've probably seen her on television from time to time as well. She also writes a regular column for The Daily Beast which is where this eye-opening article appeared. In it Powers argues that because of Planned Parenthood's inefficiency and blatant dishonesty, they shouldn't be receiving any tax money.

Read and pass along.

...Over this time period, the U.S. government has funneled billions of dollars to Planned Parenthood, in large part because the organization claims to provide services to avoid unplanned pregnancies – a laudable goal. Yet despite a robust budget—Planned Parenthood reported a total annual revenue of $1.1 billion in its last financial filing—the organization has done absolutely nothing to change the fundamental dynamics of the United States’ abortion rate.

Asked about the “Contraception” study, the Guttmacher numbers and why no women were saying they got abortions due to lack of access to contraception, a Planned Parenthood spokesman emailed this Orwellian response: “I think the biggest barrier is access to affordable contraception.”  Huh?

I was pointed to a Planned Parenthood study that showed that one in three women voters reported having struggled with the cost of prescription birth control at some point.

It’s unclear whether Planned Parenthood officials simply don’t understand statistics or are so accustomed to having their claims unquestioned that they think if they repeat them often enough, the facts will disappear. Obviously, you can complain of struggling with the cost of prescription birth control and also face an unwanted pregnancy for reasons that have nothing to do with lack of access to birth control. (By the way, Guttmacher was founded by Planned Parenthood; these are the numbers the group views as the most reliable.)

The House recently approved a Republican proposal to block $363 million in federal aid for Planned Parenthood, a move wholly motivated by opposition to the abortion services that the organization provides--even though officials say they don't use federal funds directly to perform abortions. The vote was mostly along party lines, with 10 Democrats voting for the measure to defund, and seven Republicans opposing it. It is unlikely to survive in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

To preserve its federal subsidy, Planned Parenthood continues to claim that without its contraception services the abortion rate will go up. This deception smacks of a fleecing of taxpayers in an effort to promote an ideological agenda, rather than a sincere effort to help women plan families.

What is that ideology, exactly? To find out, you have to dig through Planned Parenthood’s tax forms because the group certainly isn’t going to tell you. According to its most recent tax filing, the purpose of Planned Parenthood Federation of America is to provide leadership in “[a]chieving, through informed individual choice, a U.S. population of stable size in an optimum environment; in stimulating and sponsoring relevant biomedical, socio-economic, and demographic research.”

So it is, in reality, a population-control organization. Funny, this was never mentioned in the gauzy $200,000 advertising campaign launched last week. It also doesn’t make it into the “About Us” section of the group’s website, which repeatedly claims its mission is to protect women’s health, when in fact the real mission is to keep the birth rate at whatever level the leaders believe it should be.

To hear Planned Parenthood and their supporters, they exist only to provide Pap smears or breast exams or prenatal services. In fact, President Cecile Richards has gone so far as to erroneously imply that they provide mammograms. (A spokesperson for the group confirmed to me that this is untrue.)

Planned Parenthood officials are allowed to believe whatever they want and to pursue whatever goals they choose. But their dishonesty in how they present their organization to the public, along with ignoring basic statistics about their area of expertise, makes you wonder what else they are hiding. It’s also hard to deny that they are at core a blindly ideological organization, not a run-of-the-mill charitable nonprofit.

Whatever you think of abortion rights, this is not the kind of organization that taxpayers should be funding.

Violence Erupts at Rap Music Event? I'm Shocked.

In Arlington, Virginia police were called out when fights erupted at the posh Crystal City Hyatt during an awards ceremony honoring rap and hip-hop performers. The brawl was captured on video which was then aired on a Fox News segment. Five people were treated for injuries by paramedics and one person had to be hospitalized. No arrests were reported.

Of course, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and the boys never had such problems. For that matter, neither did Elvis or the Beatles. But then the music they performed didn't glorify pimps, pushers or capping cops.

Sigh. The devolution of culture continues.

What Gives? Pro-Abortion Leader Disses Pro-Abortion Movement.

Long famous for her aggressive advocacy of abortion, Catholics for a Free Choice founder Frances Kissling surprised a few folks with her op/ed column for the Washington Post last weekend. The reason for the surprise is certainly hinted at by the title of her article: "Abortion Rights Are Under Attack -- Pro-Choice Advocates Are Caught in a Time Warp."

However, Kissling's motives for writing the piece are pretty obvious for those that have followed her well-paying career as a heretic and abortion advocate: 1) She is a sincere and energetic zealot for abortion. And 2) She loves the spotlight. Both motives were served by the article.

True, there were a few of Kissling's colleagues who were ticked off by the article, people like Maryland's former head of NARAL Karyn Strickler, a hardcore enthusiast who has championed partial birth abortion as a good and necessary thing. She interpreted Kissling's criticism of the pro-choice movement as "a total sell-out" that must be rejected. "Under not [sic] circumstances should pro-choice advocates give into the kind of surrender that Kissling champions."

But Strickler represents those obscurantist pro-abortion leaders that have done so effective job in disgusting the American people. By ardently campaigning for such obvious atrocities as late-term abortions, such leaders have demonstrated to the general public a lack of compassion, a lack of balance and even a lack of reason.

Kissling only states then what is obvious to all but the most muddle-headed when she writes, "We can no longer pretend the fetus is invisible...Very few people would argue that there is no difference between the decision to abort at 6 weeks and the decision to do so when the fetus would be viable outside of the womb, which today is generally at 24 to 26 weeks. Still, it is rare for mainstream movement leaders to say that publicly. Abortion is not merely a medical matter, and there is an unintended coarseness to claiming that it is. We need to firmly and clearly reject post-viability abortions except in extreme cases."

There are other criticisms of the pro-abortion movement that Kissling makes that are of significant interest. But no one should mistake the intent of her article. Yes, she understands why her movement is beginning to fail. Technology has opened the womb to careful scrutiny and what the public saw inside was not a mass of cells, not a blob of tissue, not a mere lifestyle choice -- but rather the wonderful, delightful, miraculous child who has an inalienable right to life. As even Sandra Day-O'Connor predicted, Roe v Wade was on a "collision course" with scientific realities. Kissling is smart enough to see that once preborn children star in TV commercials airing during the Super Bowl, the game is up.

But, despite the rant of someone like Strickler, make no mistake -- Francis Kissling remains imperiously pro-abortion. She's just trying to help get her pro-abortion colleagues to recognize the inevitable and gear up for new strategies -- strategies which will keep Planned Parenthood coffers full and abortion mills busy. Kissling isn't selling out the movement; she is only trying to repackage the rhetoric and tactics needed to keep abortion selling in the marketplace.

Thus she encourages the defense of existing abortion laws including, one is led to believe, laws prohibiting informed consent and parental consent. "Pro-choice advocates have good reason to oppose legislation that restricts abortion in any way," she writes. Kissling also denies that the preborn child has anything like a "right" to life since "its value may not be equal to that of the pregnant woman." She even thinks late-term abortion can be defended by  playing the exceptions game. "Exceptions include when the woman's life is at immediate risk; when the fetus suffers from conditions that are incompatible with a good quality of life; or when the woman's health is seriously threatened by a medical or psychological condition that continued pregnancy will exacerbate."

Note carefully Kissling's Orwellian line,"when the fetus suffers from conditions that are incompatible with a good quality of life." We know all too well how broad that "quality of life" stuff can be: Down's Syndrome, hemophilia, blindness, just about any disability you can name. Indeed, that line has even stretched to matters of gender, race, and guesses regarding the preborn's sociological future. And the "psychological condition" she mentions as an acceptable reason for post-viability abortion? Kissling well knows that's a convenient, all-purpose justification that abortionists have used for decades.

One other item. Kissling's article reveals a strategy already underway in the political debates about the de-funding of Planned Parenthood. It's a strategy that concedes a few pro-life points...but only to be used in the opening salvos of the public debate. When it comes to action, Kissling wants not only abortion protected from legal restriction, she also wants more government funding for birth control, for sex education of the progressive sort and for welfare policies that further erode family structure, moral traditions and personal responsibility.

No, it turns out that Kissling isn't surrendering a thing. Nevertheless, her article remains must reading for pro-life advocates for it does emphasize some of the points we must continue to press home to the American people. Tell the story of the marvelous advances in embryology. Talk it up about ultrasounds, about fetal surgery, about the increased survival rates of preemie babies. And make sure the agenda includes the trauma of abortion to the mother and the long-term health risks that abortion increases.  And don't neglect the moral arena. The Bible couldn't be clearer in its opposition to the murder of the innocent. Speak from that noble height as well.

The abortion movement has been weakened; there's no doubt about it. But it is still far from weak. Our moral duty is to make it more so day by day.

Jane Russell, Christian Pro-Life Advocate and Champion of Adoption

What was generally not reported in the MSM obituaries of Hollywood superstar Jane Russell is that she was an aborted woman who deeply regretted her action, believed it was probably the reason she was unable to bear other children and, after returning to Christianity, became a vocal pro-life advocate.

Jane Russell adopted three children and founded the World Adoption International Agency which has now connected over 40,000 children from overseas to adoptive parents in the U.S. She also began a weekly Bible study at her home for believers in the film industry.

In lieu of flowers at her funeral, her family asked donations be made in her name to either the Care Net Pregnancy and Resource Center of Santa Maria or the Court Appointed Special Advocates of Santa Barbara County.

China Owns Us...And So Do a Few Others

The Obama administration has admitted that China's holdings of U.S. bonds are nearly $270 billion more than what was previously claimed. But then what's a measly $270 billion mistake when you're dealing with an overall debt of $1.16 trillion to the Communist nation.

But wait, there's more. Red China only owns 1/4 of the U.S. debt that is owned by foreigners! That's right; a whopping $4.44 trillion of U.S. treasury bonds and other securities are held by foreign countries, companies and individuals.

You can take that Pepto-Bismol now.

Here's the AFP story over on Yahoo News.

A Water Bill Higher Than Your Mortgage? Atlanta Officials Ignore Citizen Complaints.

We've heard all our lives that you can't fight city hall. But in Atlanta, you can't even get 'em on the phone.

"I thought we were sinking in a hole of water," said Debbi Scarborough. "It scared me to death. I thought we had a major leak when I got the bill."

Over two months last summer, her family's monthly water bill, shot up to $1,805 In July and then $1,084 in August, leaving a balance due of more than $3,000. She said in the past her bill has averaged $200 to $250.

"I'm not paying a $3,000 bill. And for those three months, we were pretty much out of town most of the time and there's no leaks," she said, showing CNN a copy of her plumber's report.

The city installed a device on her meter to track daily usage. In the meantime, Scarborough's bill remains unpaid while she disputes the charges.

She is not alone.

Yet nobody can get city officials to answer their questions, let alone fix the problem.

Wilda Cobb, an attorney for the Environmental Protection Agency, has been shocked to get water bills totaling over $10,000. Almost $7,000 was in one month! "I am furious, I am upset, I'm confused," Cobb said. "I can't get an answer from the city because they won't admit there is a problem."

British Court: Foster Children at Risk of Being "Infected" by Christian Morality

Owen and Eunice Johns are Pentecostal Christians who have been praised by local social workers as "kind and hospitable people who respond sensitively" to the children in their care. Indeed, these dedicated grandparents have already served as foster parents to 15 children.

But not any more. For a British court yesterday has ruled them unfit for such service -- because they believe that homosexuality is "against God’s law and morals." The couple insist that they are not homophobic and would accept and love any child. They point out that they continue to enjoy a warm relationship with a nephew who is homosexual. They've even visited him in his home in San Francisco.

"We wanted to offer love and stability and security to a vulnerable child. Eight-year-olds we have looked after want to play, not talk about their sexuality."

But none of this matters to the court.

During the case, the Equality and Human Rights Commission argued that children risk being ‘infected’ by Christian moral views. Yesterday the retired couple’s request for a ruling that faith should not be a bar to becoming a carer was denied at the High Court in London.

Their case was heard by one of the most senior members of the family court, Lord Justice Munby, who was sitting alongside Mr Justice Beeston. It was ruled that there was no discrimination against them as Christians but that their views on sexual morality may be ‘inimical’ – or harmful – to children. In that situation, they ruled: ‘The equality provisions concerning sexual orientation should take precedence.’

The Johnses are considering an appeal but campaigners fear the ruling will be used as a blueprint for other councils to stop devout Christians from becoming foster parents.

The couple, who have four grown-up children and six grandchildren, had applied to be respite carers offering short-term placements for children aged between five and ten.

Mrs Johns, a retired nurse, said: ‘This is a sad day for Christianity. The judges have suggested that our views might harm children. We do not believe that this is so. We are prepared to love and accept any child.

‘All we were not willing to do was to tell a small child that the practice of homosexuality was a good thing.’

Homosexual leaders were very pleased at the ruling.

Ben Summerskill, chief executive of Stonewall, the lesbian, gay and bisexual charity, said: 'We're delighted that the High Court's landmark decision has favoured 21st-century decency above 19th-century prejudice. In any fostering case the interests of the 60,000 children in care should override the bias of any prospective parent. Thankfully, Mr and Mrs Johns's out-dated views aren't just out of step with the majority of people in modern Britain, but those of many Christians too."
