The Real St. Patrick

The arrival of St. Patrick’s Day will elicit various celebrations. For instance, there will be much made of the uniqueness of the Irish race but, at least for the duration of the holiday, the non-Irish are invited to participate in the fun: sporting green clothing, wearing leprechaun decorations, pinching, eating corned beef sandwiches, politically-correct parades, and painting big green shamrocks in the public streets...usually outside the taverns.

It's all strange behavior and quite irrelevant to the memory of St. Patrick. Indeed, when one bothers to look beneath the pagan coverings of St. Patrick's Day to the man himself, one finds a truly noble Christian hero. So, let’s take a look at the historical figure of Saint Patrick. Let’s ignore the silliness and learn the lessons God would teach us about a faithful, zealous servant of Christ.

You might know the legends - how Patrick expelled the snakes from Ireland; how he explained the Trinity by reference to the shamrock; and so on. But the historical Patrick is more intriguing and inspirational than even the Patrick of legend.

The first revealing fact is that Patrick was not Irish! He was a Scot by birth, the son of a decurio (town councilor) who served as a deacon in the church. His grandfather was also a man of the cloth. While still a youth, Patrick was captured by Irish pirates and reduced to slavery there. It was a life devoted to tending his master’s goat and sheep herds but Patrick finally began to find a measure of comfort and strength through prayer. This was in dramatic contrast to his earlier years in Britain when, as Patrick himself described it, he “knew not the true God” and did not heed the “clerical admonitions for salvation.”

Patrick escaped from his slavery -- after six years -- and made his way to a port some 200 miles away on the southeast coast of Ireland. He persuaded some sailors to take him with them, but it would still be a long time before Patrick reached home. In fact, there were various adventures in foreign lands ahead, including days where he nearly starved to death. But God was gracious to him and Patrick finally returned to his family, though very much changed. He had embraced the Christian faith of his family by his own convictions now. And he embraced too the call of service in Christ’s kingdom.

Patrick first received a basic clerical training. This would have included instruction using the Latin Bible (which he came to know well) but it was not a highly academic education, the lack of which he always regretted and for which he was sometimes criticized in later years by his enemies. His own Latin writings are certainly inelegant, even at times rustic, but they reflect a purity and power arising from a heart dedicated to the Lord.

Then, in a remarkable display of compassion and courage, Patrick decided to return to Ireland. By his own choice, he returned to the land where he had been worked as a slave, this time to bring the liberating message of the gospel. This was in 435.

Patrick worked principally in the North with his base at Armagh. It was from here that he made his many missionary journeys among the heathen Celtic tribes. Those efforts were blessed by God and were very successful. Patrick was a tireless worker, an expert organizer, and a man of consecrated prayer. By the end of his life, he had planted over 200 congregations and introduced thousands to the true religion of Jesus Christ.

Patrick’s most crucial goals were confrontational and were pursued with tremendous zeal -- abolishing paganism, idolatry, and sun-worship. He was ready for imprisonment or even death in following Christ. Nevertheless, he was generally popular. He made no distinction of classes; he was simple and unpretentious; he was compassionate and humble.  And he never forgot his origins. Indeed, Patrick retained, even in his old age, vivid memories of being an unlearned exile, a slave, a desperate fugitive, and a lost soul who, by the incredible mercies of God, had learned to trust wholly in the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross for his salvation.

Patrick lives in example, but he also lives through his writings, the earliest to still survive from the British church. They are his Confession (his autobiography), the Letter to Coroticus (which was a protest against British slave-traders), and the Lorica (translated “Breastplate”) which stands as one of the most beautiful pieces of ancient Christian literature. Here's a passage from the latter:

May the strength of God pilot us.
May the power of God preserve us.
May the wisdom of God instruct us.
May the hand of God protect us.
May the way of God direct us.
May the shield of God defend us.
May the hosts of God guard us against the snares of the Evil One and the temptations of the world.
May Christ be with us. Christ before us.
Christ in us. Christ over us.
May thy salvation, O Lord, be always ours this day and for evermore.

Among Our Ministry Heroes...Alliance Defending Freedom

Among the ministries Claire and I support with prayer, financial donations,
encouragement through letters, and passing the word along to others about their invaluable and truly superb work is Alliance Defending Freedom, the nation’s largest legal organization committed to protecting religious freedom, free speech, marriage and family, parental rights, and the sanctity of life.

And they are educators too. Case in point? This excellent article, "What the FDA Hasn’t Told You About Mifepristone," by Erik Baptist, senior counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom. It's one of the best I've read in exposing the FDA's irresponsibility.

Below is the link to that article. And then below that is a link to ADF's website where we encourage you to go and browse around a bit. You may well decide that you'd like to start supporting them also.

Jesus Hosts a "Fish Fry" (John 21:1-14)

In this recent sermon, Denny "unpacks" John 21:1-14, one of the most inviting scenes in the gospels. In this passage, we see prophesies fulfilled, Jesus' only recorded post-resurrection miracle, insights into the character of certain disciples, the wonderful hospitality of Jesus, and more.

“Lighthouse” Letters: Examples from Vital Signs’ Latest Letter-Writing Party (Part 2)

Here are a few more examples from Monday's letter-writing party, the latest in Vital Signs Ministries' quarterly ministry of this kind. As I mentioned previously, they were written by different people but all with a desire to be a light in the darkness, offering (as needed in the particular case) enlightenment, inspiration, or encouragement, instead of merely cursing the darkness.

Like those posted yesterday, today’s notes deal with various pro-life, religious freedom, and morality issues and I certainly hope they might motivate you to write some letters on your own. We always are available to help you do so with information, tips on letter-writing, addresses, and so on. Let's go...

* Dear Southwest Airlines,

Your company has fallen into the same “woke extremism” as so many others and has thereby insulted the vast majority of those who make up your would-be profit base.  Because of this outlandish promotion of leftist ideology and unnatural, dishonorable lifestyle practices, I am one of the many who will seek alternatives to your services.

* Dear CVS,

We write with profound concerns about your decision to sell the abortion drug Mifepristone.  Indeed, because you certainly know the lethal effect of this poisonous drug – it kills preborn boys and girls – we will no longer be shopping at your stores.

Please reconsider this tragic and terribly misguided decision.

* Dear Governor Jim Pillen,

I pray for you to have godly wisdom and to seek His will in all of your decisions.  I pray you will God fearing and be strong in the decisions you make for Nebraskans.  God has allowed you to be our governor.

Please take a strong stand against abortion and abortion pills, transgenderism and woke CRT ideology.

We also need charter schools and revamping our education system.  Discipline of our children needs to come back.  They are crying out for boundaries and teachers and principals’ hands are tied and can’t do their job.  My husband teaches for OPS and I work for OPS also and we have seen the decline of our school system.  We need help.

* Senator DeBoer,

I know that you have opposed LB626 – the Heartbeat bill, but I want to ask you to reconsider this opposition.  Babies in the womb deserve the protection of adults and I pray you will agree.

* Mr. Tucker Carlson,

It is with great gratitude that I write to thank you for your courage in reporting what so few are willing to cover. You stand out among your peers.  I have been skeptical for a long time about reporting on the major networks and print publications because I have seen firsthand how they lie about pro-life Americans. It is amazing you are able to break through.

I pray that you are protected in all that you do and that you know the One Who is truth in fulness.

* United Airlines

Mr. Gary C. Kelly,

My #1 priority when traveling by air is safety and so I am concerned about the best qualified pilots, co-pilots, mechanics, and technicians. I do not care about your employees' sexual proclivities, so please do not think that virtue signaling about how biologically or sexually diverse your crews are is going to impress me as an air traveller. Indeed, I am actually less inclined to use your airlines now that I know this is a priority in your hiring.

* Dear Alliance Defending Freedom,

Part of every Vital Signs Ministries letter-writing party – after we have written letters urging actions on sanctity of life, religious freedom, and other values arising from biblical truth – we make sure we write with thanks and encouragement to a few of the genuine “good guys” in the fight.  And, we wanted to make sure we acknowledge the excellent work being done by your team in enlightening, inspiring, and helping equip saints across the country to stand strong for these values.

Way to go, guys.  You will remain in our frequent prayers.

* Dear Rev. Graham,

In this tempestuous and decadent culture, you and Samaritan’s Purse and BGEA remain beacons of light for the Lord Jesus.  And you do so with winsome and wise service that has such an effective, persuasive effect.  Thank you so much.  And may our Lord continue to lead, protect, purify, and empower you and your colleagues.

We are honored to support Samaritan’s Purse with only a little bit of money but with a whole lot of prayer and public praise.

* Dear Senator Ricketts,

We send along our sincere congratulations for your appointment to the U.S. Senate. It is a much deserved honor and a great blessing to the people of Nebraska…and the nation. We are certain that the same quality of wise, principles leadership that make your tenure as Governor so effective will be a hallmark of your services in the Senate.  And we will be praying to that end.

And, of course, we will pray that you will become one of the strongest of voices there in D.C. for the sanctity of life, religious freedom, and family values.

Again, congratulations.

"Lighthouse" Letters: Examples from Vital Signs' Latest Letter-Writing Party (1)

As promised in this post from yesterday, I’m printing below a few samples of the letters and cards that were written at the two Vital Signs Ministries letter-writing last Monday. They represent, by the way, several different letter writers.

Today’s notes deal with various pro-life, religious freedom, and morality issues and I certainly hope they might motivate you to write some letters on your own. Vital Signs Ministries always stands ready to help you do so with information, tips on letter-writing, addresses, and so on.

* Dear Coca-Cola,

For a great deal of my long life I have enjoyed Coke products.  However, as your company has gone further and further down the path of radical, unnatural “wokeness,” I have decided to forego the pleasure. No more Coke from now on…unless you quickly reconsider this counter-productive path and get back to making quality products as opposed to pushing an extreme ideological agenda that is so at odds with the best ideals of Western civilization.

* Dear Walgreen’s,

I am a pro-life woman who has shopped and even worked at Walgreens for many years. I am writing to request that you do not dispense pills that cause the deliberate death of an unborn baby and have the potential to gravely harm the mother.

This matters deeply to millions of pro-life persons who up to this time have been regular customers of yours. But you’re certainly going to lose a lot of them if you do start dispensing pills that kill preborn boys and girls.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I implore you to reconsider doing anything that would take a life.

* Dear State Senator DeBoer,

I am a retired woman who lives in your district.  I am also a strong pro-lifer, believing that abortion is the murder of innocent lives. As a young teenager many years ago, I was faced with an unwanted pregnancy.  I was fortunate to have a godly mother who helped direct me to an agency that dealt with adoption.  This happened before Roe v Wade and abortion was illegal but I never would have chosen that anyway.

My daughter eventually found me, and she is now a wonderful mother and grandmother to 6 lovely children.  How thankful I am to know I gave my child life and do not have to look back with regret of choosing to kill my child.

I pray you will turn from your liberal views and realize the value of each pregnancy as a human being and see abortion for what it is, the murder in a brutal way of an innocent child.

* To the Permanent Representative of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations.

Dear Mr. Zhang Jun,

This is just a brief but impassioned note asking that you use your influence to persuade China to exercise greater restraint, mercy, and justice in dealing with religious freedom.

We sincerely ask you to act against imprisonment and other harsh treatment of peaceful, productive citizens who simply desire to worship the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thank you for your consideration of this critically important matter.

* Senator Ricketts,

Congratulations on your new role in the U. S. Senate.  I was very pleased with your terms as Nebraska’s Governor, particularly in cutting taxes, preserving our freedoms, opposing federal government overreach, and restricting abortion zealotry. You have done a stellar job and I encourage you to continue those fights in D.C.

One particular issue I’m presently concerned about is keeping away the World Health Organization’s intrusion into our national sovereignty.  This is of the utmost importance.

I continue to pray for your courage to stand against the globalist agenda.

* Dear President Biden,

Wow -- you have certainly made a mess of things in these two years and, of course, your most grievous action has been your turning against the Catholic teachings you once claimed to be so important to you.

I urge you, Mr. President, to please reverse course and begin to honor God, speak the truth, defend the sanctity of all human life, protect America’s borders, and keep us free from entangling relationships with rogue nations.

* Dear State Senator Hunt,

Please vote against the following bills:

LB179 – Forces counselors to affirm transgenderism and same sex attraction in children.  Counselors should be allowed to practice using their own thoughts and skills and not being forced by law to say “yes” to a disorder that needs attention not promotion.

LB169 – Sexual orientation and gender identity protected class.  This undermines constitutional freedoms, unfairly targets small businesses, and gives men unfettered access to places that were formerly safe for women.

LB316 – Replaces husband and wife with spouse 1 and spouse 2.  Marriage between one biological man and one biological woman has always been the truth since God created it and even if we try to change it, it’s still going to be the truth.  Please leave this God-given institution alone.

LR26CA – Removes the definition of marriage from the NE constitution.  This also undermines the truth.  This was placed in the state constitution by over 70% of voters.

Megan, I’m praying for you.  God has allowed you to be in this position and you are accountable to Him. Jesus loves you and created you and He’s the One Who has given you opportunities, skills, and abilities. But you must choose whether to serve the Lord or the self.

John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that He gave His One and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting live.” You are included in the world, Megan.  Jesus gave His life for you and He rose again to prove the efficiency of His salvation offer.

* To the FBI,

With your absolutely unconscionable targeting of pro-life Americans instead of concentrating on what should be the priority of your agency (namely, protecting the citizenry from genuine criminals), you are bringing shame and scandal (even ridicule) to what was once one of our nation’s most respected institutions.

Please get back to the real business of the FBI…protecting the United States from the “bad guys” like terrorists, counterfeiters, kidnappers, bank robbers, sex traffickers, and murderers. And leave the innocent, peaceful, and productive citizens (like Christian pro-life advocates) alone.

And again, I’ll have a few more examples tomorrow.

Letters for Life, for Freedom, and for Sanity

It’s been quite a couple of days – preaching at Grace Bible Church on Sunday morning and then the dash to Aksarben Village Senior Living for our Sunday afternoon church service.  A very engaging time at both. And then Sunday night we were hustling to get things ready for two letter-writing parties on Monday.

But before we could get to those events, we joined Keith for prayers and our pro-life witness outside the wicked abortion profiteer that is Planned Parenthood.  And oh, what a cold, cold wind was blowing down 92nd Street!

After that, we turned the heater on high for the drive home and so we were ready to finish our preparations for miniature egg casseroles, biscuits and jam, homemade kolaches (thank you, Jean!) juice and coffee for when the Hovanecs, Lawsons, and Morans arrived. Following our meal,  we settled in to write 50 + letters. Great job, guys!

Claire ran errands in the afternoon while I worked on editing the March edition of “When Swing Was King” which needed to be ready by Tuesday morning. Yipes.  And then we enjoyed the evening letter-writing party where John, Becky, Don, Ruth, and Claire and I wrote another 40 + letters.  Unfortunately, we didn’t have very many letter-writers present -- in comparison, the last one in December drew 25 people -- but all those involved did a really terrific job.

By the way, the targets for our letters were as varied as usual.  They included:

* Urgent requests to Walgreens, CVS, and Rite-Aid to NOT distribute poisonous pills that kill preborn boys and girls.

* Polite, principled protests of the bizarre, counter-productive, and immoral “lurch to the loony left” that have been made by such companies as Bank of America, United Airlines (American and Southwest also), Best Buy, Home Depot, Kohl’s, Walmart, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Kellogg’s, and McDonald’s.

* Pro-life and pro-family concerns before the Nebraska Unicameral: LB626, LB179, LB169, LB316, and LR26CA.

* Advocacy for more just and humane treatment of religious persons from government officials in China, Eritrea, Iran, and North Korea.

* Several issues related to government action: the FBI harassing pro-life citizens; the foolish passion being demonstrated by the Department of Defense and Department of Education for formerly unthinkable immorality hiding under the terms “diversity & inclusivity;” vote fraud; and more.

* And then a lot of thank-yous to the good guys: Franklin Graham, Tim Tebow, Tucker Carlson, ADF, Nebraska Family Alliance, Joni & Friends, Samaritan's Purse, Senator Ricketts, and several others.

I may post a few sample letters tomorrow.  In the meantime, please consider grabbing paper and pen and writing a few notes of your own.  It’s way better to shine than whine!

A Few Terrific Resources

Dear friends,

We wanted to send along a few items that we think you’ll find of interest and inspiration.  Indeed, we hope you’ll find them valuable enough to pass them onto others…like your pastors and youth pastors. For instance, we are sending links to two remarkable pro-life music videos that we played at one of our sessions at the recent L’Abri conference, they received rave reviews.  We believe both of these can be life-changing, even lifesaving were they to be seen by American youth. Do check them out – you’ll never forget them.

Anyhow, here’s what we’ve got for you.

1) Two brief Bible expositions which make excellent pro-life apologetics. They are “The Real Emmanuel Moment,” and “An Old Testament Defense of Preborn Children: A Brief Exposition of Exodus 21:22-25.” You can find them under Articles at the Vital Signs Ministries website.

2) The link to the Nick Cannon video: https://youtu.be/QcW738wXoHk
(Lyrics to this song are printed at the end of this post.)

3) The link to the Matt Kennon video: https://youtu.be/YK3zs7EV6Tk

4) “Abortion and Church History” is also available on our website. It is a remarkable collection of quotations from Church Fathers and others down through the Reformation and beyond. We have a brochure version of that article which you can order from us at no cost, but you can also print off the website version as well.

Again, dear friends, we hope you find these resources of help in your pro-life service.

Can I Live? (Lyrics)

Can I live?
I'm talking, ma
I know this situation is personal
But it's something that has to be told
As I was making this beat
You was all I could think about
You heard my voice
Yeah, uh huh
Just think, just think
What if you could just
Just blink yourself away
Just, just wait, just pause for a second
Let me plead my case.

It's the late 70's, huh
You seventeen, huh
And having me, that will ruin everything huh
It's a lot of angels waiting on their wings
You see me in your sleep so you can't kill your dreams
Three hundred dollars, that's the price of living? What?
Mommy, I don't like this clinic
Hopefully you'll make the right decision
And don't go though with the knife decision
But it's hard to make the right move when you in high school
Now you gotta work all day and take night school
Hopping on the bus and the rain is pouring
What you want morning sickness or the sickness of mourning?
Can I live?

I'll always be a part of you
Trust your soul, know it's always true
If I could talk I'd say to you
Can I live?
Can I live?

I'll always be a part of you
Trust your soul, know it's always true
If I could talk I'd say to you
Can I live?
Can I live?

I'm a child of the king, ain't no need to go fear me
And I see the flowing tears so I know that you hear me
When I move in your womb that's me being scared
Cuz who knows where my future holds
Yo, the truth be told you ain't told a soul
Yo, you ain't even showing, I'm just two months old
Through your clothes try to hide me, deny me
Went up three sizes, your pride got you lying
Saying ain't nothing but a migraine
It ain't surprising you not trying to be in Wic Food lines
Your friends look at you funny but look at you mommy
That's a life inside, take a look at your tummy
What is becoming, ma? I'm Oprah bound
You can tell he a star from the Ultrasound
Our spirits connected, doors open now
Nothing but love and respect
Thanks for holding it down, she let me live.

[Hook]
[Hook]

It's uplifing for real, y'all
I ain't passing no judgement, ain't making no decisions
I'm just telling y'all my story
I love life
And I love my mother for giving me life
We all need to appreciate life
And a strong woman who had to make a sacrifice
Thanks for listening
Thanks for listening!
Momma, thanks for listening

Letters for Life...and More

As Claire and I drove to Wichita yesterday (We are spending a couple of days with my ailing sister.), we talked about the long history of Vital Signs Ministries hosting letter-writing parties.  Indeed, even at the very beginning when we had just got started as the Omaha Christian Action Council (that’s 1983 for you who are counting), we started the practice of letter-writing parties as yet another key ministry of pro-life advocacy.

We did so because we were convinced (and we are more than ever) that letters are of tremendous value as we 1) use them to be true “voices for the voiceless” before others; 2) to engage in purposeful, effective engagement instead of submitting to indifference or despair; 3) to utilize the assistance, encouragement, and accountability of fellow Christians to make our pro-life witness to others as strong and persuasive as it can be; 4) to consistently demonstrate to the Lord Jesus our willingness to “shine” rather than merely “whine” about what’s happening in our culture; and 5) to balance our letters of protest and advocacy with letters expressing gratitude and complements to the “good guys” who are fighting the good fight for Christ. (By the way, that last task has led us to always include a portion of our letter-writing parties in behalf of persecuted Christians.

So, what about you?  Have you let us know about your joining us for our upcoming letter-writing parties.  For your convenience, we do, in fact, have two of them this time around – a daytime gathering from 10 to 12 on March 6th and then the regular evening party at 7 also on March 6th.  We would sure love to have you for this important, historic, and ongoing ministry.  Please RSVP soon.

Our Church Celebrates 2 Years

Today was a very special day for the church service that Vital Signs Ministries conducts every Sunday afternoon at Aksarben Village Senior Living. Indeed, 21 of us were gathered there today for a wonderful celebration of our two-year anniversary.

We enjoyed music videos from Southern Raised, Glen Campbell, and the collected choirs from the Royal Albert Hall in London along with a brief sermon on Psalm 107:1-3.

Like usual, the service portion of the afternoon was 30-35 minutes followed by another 30-45 minutes of lively conversation afterward. And today, instead of cookies to go with our coffee and lemonade, it was a special cake from Petit's Bakery. Thank You, Lord, for a marvelous two years of this inspirational ministry.

The Christian Education Mandate: Reviewing the Latest L’Abri Conference

The snow was fast accumulating when we left Omaha for our trip to the L’Abri Conference in Rochester, Minnesota last Thursday morning.  And it was going to make for perilous driving were we to take our regular route to Des Moines and up I-35.  But a careful look at the storm’s path convinced us to head directly north towards Sioux City, Worthington, and then on east to Rochester. And, sure enough, after only an hour or so of driving, we hit clear and dry roads all the way.  Thank You, Lord.

Because I was one of the presenters in the conference, we were invited to a Thursday night kickoff gathering with a warm welcome, introductions to other speakers, lively conversations, and a good time of prayer together.  It was a nice start to the proceedings and made us appreciate all the more the hard work the small L’Abri team had put in to bring the conference off.

There were a few hundred people in attendance to participate in 6 plenary sessions; an evening “concert” featuring readings of the Dorothy Sayers radio play, The Man Born to be King; and then 28 (count ’em, 28!) elective workshop sessions scheduled in four time slots on Friday and Saturday. Oh yes, the conference theme?  “The Christian Education Mandate and its Challenges.”’

Vital Signs Ministries’ part in the conference, beside Claire and I being deeply interested members of the audience, consisted of my presenting two workshop sessions and providing one of the 7 or 8 literature tables that were displayed outside the main lecture hall of the historic Kahler Grand Hotel.

On our table were our free pamphlets “Abortion and Church History” and “Scripture References on Abortion” as well as our bookmarks for the “3 for 5” Prayer Campaign Against Planned Parenthood.  We also had single page Bible exegesis articles I had written on “The Real Emmanuel Event '' (Luke 1:26-45) and "An Old Testament Defense of Preborn Children: A Brief Exposition of Exodus 21:22-25. These are, if we say so ourselves, very good resources and we’ve now added them to the VSM website.

We also offered my novel The Christmas Room which proved a popular item.

My lecture sessions were Friday morning’s “Beware the Mad Scientist: Divine Warnings Against Playing God from Classical Literature” and Saturday morning’s “A Winsome Witness: Communicating the Bible’s Pro-life Ethics through Word and Deed.”  We were very pleased with how those presentations went and the enthusiastic responses we received.  For instance, one young fellow later wrote, “It was great to meet you and your wife this past weekend. Your workshop, "Beware the Mad Scientist," was my favorite of the whole weekend. I came out of that one edified and newly inspired for my own writings. Thank you for presenting!"

The other sessions we attended were also very enlightening and helpful with such speakers as Vishal Mangalwadi (author of The Book that Made Your World: How the Bible Created the Soul of Western Civilization, and several others), Greg Jesson, Peter Merz, Mike Sugimoto, Sarah Chestnut, Doug Groothius who we became friends with over Saturday’s lunch (author of Confronting the New Age, The Soul in Cyberspace, Truth Decay, Christian Apologetics: A Comprehensive Case for Biblical Faith, Walking Through Twilight: A Wife's Illness -- A Philosopher's Lament, and many others), and more.

We have ordered recordings of all the sessions and, as we have done before, we will probably plan at least a couple  “L’Abri Evenings” in which we will play a lecture and discuss it over coffee.  We know most definitely that we want you to hear Greg Jesson’s “Responding to the Inevitable Unraveling of Higher Education."  It was really terrific.  We’ll keep you informed.

A Word of Encouragement…From Middle Earth

To help encourage you today in your Christian mission, I have a little story for you -- one taken from JRR Tolkien’s masterful Lord of the Rings trilogy. Now, as a Baptist preacher, I’m usually using a different text for public exhortations, but I don’t think you’ll mind if I use this one today. The scene I’m drawing to your attention comes from the last book in the trilogy. The brave hobbits Frodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee are struggling through Mordor on their way to Mt. Doom and, in this terrible moment when Frodo is nearly overcome with despair, fatigue, and dread, he turns to his dear friend and moans, “I can’t do this, Sam.”

At which Sam Gamgee, one of the most wonderfully heroic characters in all literature, responds, “I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness, and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened?

But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it’ll shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.”

Frodo then asks, “What are we holding on to, Sam?”

The answer? “That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo…and it’s worth fighting for.”

My friends, we have things good and worth fighting for too – the biblical ideals of truth, justice, and the sanctity of human life. So the decision of these two characters must be, in real life, our decisions too. Oh yes; we have a God-given opportunity to be heroes just like Frodo and Sam, Merry and Pippin, Aragorn and Gandalf, and all the rest of that noble fellowship of the ring. We too must carry on with our part in the adventure story God has written us into. True enough, it’s a story that has real danger, real enemies, and real sacrifices. And yet it has spiritual rewards that are unimaginably rich and fully deserving of our boldest efforts.

So, what do you say? Let’s get after it!

“Thank You So Much for Doing This for Us!”

“Thank You So Much for Doing This for Us!”

That’s what Norma said to me as she squeezed my hand after our church service. “You do such a good job and you’ve really become our friends. And after we all had to stop going to our old churches, you and Claire and all these friends of yours have given us a church fellowship again. And we all so appreciate you doing this week after week.”

As we come up on the 2nd anniversary of the church service that Vital Signs Ministries conducts every Sunday afternoon for residents of Aksarben Village Senior Living, we can say with confidence and enthusiasm that it has been a very successful experiment.  The structure of the service has proven an excellent fit for the needs of our small congregation: three superb music videos (heavy on the great hymns of the Faith), an 8–12-minute expositional sermon, participation in communion the first Sunday of the month, and a lengthy time after each service of purposeful fellowship over coffee and cookies.  And substantial thanks for this ministry are due to the efforts of our visitation team members -- Don, Allen, Patrick, Keith and Carol, Dick, and Ruth.

The ministry has been an important extension of Vital Signs’ longstanding concern for seniors. Indeed, it’s a tradition spanning 40 years which has included the years of visiting and entertaining residents of Mercy Care Center and other facilities, advocacy articles on the website and blogs, the creation over 50 Anti-Boredom packets during the worst of the pandemic scare, the writing of The Christmas Room, and the remarkably popular “When Swing Was King” program which has now started into its 13th year with a schedule involving 10 senior facilities every month. And each month’s show is a new one, featuring 12 classic songs from the 30s, 40s, and 50s with fascinating commentary and a Power Point visual accompaniment of over 200 photographs from the same era.

Our only disappointment arising out of these “mercy ministries” is that we haven’t yet been able to inspire other Christians to pursue like-minded service to the marginalized, lonely, and hurting seniors who are all around us. After all, think of how many nursing homes and senior living centers there are in any given city and then consider how extremely few of those facilities have any evangelical outreach at all. No church services. No Bible studies. No visitation program, let alone any efforts at creating intergenerational friendships. No efforts whatsoever from local churches to help inspire, equip, and mobilize their members to engage in acts of compassion and encouragement to seniors in profound need of such mercies.

It’s not that difficult for churches (and small groups or even individuals) to create ministries to the seniors in these facilities or, for that matter, to others in our churches and neighborhoods who are otherwise “shut-in.” But it is of great importance.

If you’re interested in changing this sad condition, I encourage you to pray about any or all of the following possibilities. 1) Join us for one of our Aksarben Village church services to see how it works and to get some experience in visiting with seniors who will be delighted to make your acquaintance! Also, you might consider dropping into one of our “When Swing Was King” shows for a similar opportunity. (The schedule is on the Vital Signs Ministries website.)

2) Talk about this subject with your family, friends, and church colleagues. Such discussions might lead you to the activity director at one of the senior facilities near your home or church. You’ll find that a terrific ministry is right there for the taking.

3) For a bit more information and some inspirational ideas, you could always read The Christmas Room, a novel in which the most unlikely of heroes emerge. Or for something much shorter, you can start with these articles from Vital Signs Blog.

The Latest in Lawlessness: "We Just Won't Prosecute"

* A Virginia prosecutor says that her office will stop its involvement in the prosecution of some misdemeanor cases. Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney Buta Biberaj wrote in a memo that her office is "inundated" and needs to focus more on felony and violent crimes, Fox 5 reported.

In the memo sent by Biberaj to judges on Dec. 30, 2022, she wrote that hit-and-run (property damage), reckless driving (under 90 mph), trespass, drunk in public, and eluding are among the offenses that will not be prosecuted by her office. (Fox News)

More Evidence of Massive Vote Fraud

* More than 10.8 million mail-in ballots went “unaccounted for” in California’s midterm elections last year, data published by the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) reveals. In 2022, California election officials mailed out more than 22.1 million ballots to registered voters, the data published by PILF shows. Of those, more than 10.8 million went “unaccounted for” as researchers said election officials can only make assumptions as to what happened with the ballots. (John Binder, Breitbart)

Hang 'Em High

* Super Bowl wining coach and NFL commentator Tony Dungy and NHL hockey great Ivan Provorov are being mercilessly slandered all over the establishment press as right-wing bigots who deserve harsh punishment. What for? Dungy (an evangelical) attended the March for Life. And Provorov (a Russian Orthodox) for refusing to participate in Gay Pride festivities.

Christian Facing Jail Time for Being Converted...And Talking About It!

* A Christian charity worker in Malta could face jail time after he claimed that his faith enabled him to turn away from a homosexual lifestyle he no longer wanted.

Matthew Grech, 33, faces potential fines and imprisonment for allegedly falling afoul of his country's ban on "conversion practices" when he explained to a local media outlet last year how he left homosexuality behind because he came to believe it was wrong.

"I was invited by this new emerging platform in Malta called PMnews to share my story and to discuss sexuality in general," Grech told Fox News Digital, noting that he was "surprised" when police later called him early on a Sunday morning and ultimately served him with a prosecution order summoning him to court on Feb. 3.

Legal counsel for Grech maintains that his case is the first of its kind and threatens to set in motion a legal "domino effect" that could endanger freedom of speech and religious liberty throughout the Western world. (Fox News)

* George Soros Funding Leftist "Fact Checkers’ In Order to Silence the Right

George Soros is the most dangerous man in America. The investor is intent on remaking the country to his liberal image, from our foreign-policy priorities to undermining our criminal-justice system. This week, The Post takes a look at the reach of Soros’ billions. In this fourth essay, Matt Palumbo, author of “The Man Behind the Curtain: Inside the Secret Network of George Soros,” talks about how “fact checking” can shape the narrative.

It’s not enough for George Soros to fund the media and encourage stories that back up his point of view — he has to make sure no one disagrees with it.

Last year, Soros partnered with fellow leftist billionaire Reid Hoffman (the co-founder of LinkedIn) to financially back a project to fight so-called disinformation. The name they chose might have come from George Orwell himself: Good Information Inc. Branding anything that goes counter-narrative as “disinformation” has become the left’s latest strategy to fight anything that threatens their spin, and Soros has taken note. They're Gonna' Make Us Eat Bugs!

* I have been writing lately about the war on agriculture–the Left’s attack on modern, scientific farming. The Left’s two main targets, so far, are fertilizers and animal husbandry. What is the end game? Leftists want us to eat a largely vegetarian diet, with insects as a protein source instead of cows, pigs and poultry.

This is no secret if you follow leftist writing, but many people find it hard to believe. To be fair, there is a great deal about modern liberalism that I find hard to believe. But the plan to convert us all to insect-eaters is real. (John Hinderaker at Power Line)

The Latest Leftist Lunacies (Part 2)

Democrats Truly Are the Party of Death

* The House passed the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which says any infant born alive after an attempted abortion is a "legal person for all purposes under the laws of the United States." Doctors would be required to care for those infants as a "reasonably diligent and conscientious health care practitioner would render to any other child born alive."

The bill passed 220-210, and all 210 of the "no" votes came from Democrats. Only one Democrat voted for the bill — Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas — (Fox News)

* The Dire Debacle of "Green Energy"

Expensive energy equals more sickness and death. And this is totally avoidable. Responsibility lies with the anti-human environmental movement:

The current heating crisis is a direct consequence of “green” policies that have pushed up the price of energy in developed economies. An irrational insistence to transition to wind and solar has increased prices and reduced reliability of energy supplies. Blackouts like ones experienced by millions over the Christmas weekend are a serious threat to lives.

But human life and well-being are not valued by the Left. It is up to the rest of us to try to stave off the human disaster that “green” energy threatens. (Power Line)

The Latest in Transgender Silliness? Donating One's "Superfluous Parts"

* A Pittsburgh children's hospital is under fire after its gender program navigator advocated for helping transgender women get pregnant by giving reproductive organs to them from live donors.

In a presentation on "Fertility in the LGBTQIA+ community" last May that went viral this week, the community navigator for a youth gender program at the University of Pittsburgh Children's Hospital discussed the criteria the medical community uses for gender transition in adolescents, as well as a 2018 study on uterine transplants for transgender patients.

"One area that had not been looked at before in any serious way was could the donors be live donors?" Alicyn Simpson, who works with the hospital's pediatric Gender and Sexual Development Program, asked. "Live donation has been something the [transgender] community has talked about for decades, it was really thought about as magical thinking."

Simpson said that trans men "assigned female at birth" would discuss the possibility of giving their reproductive organs to trans females. "Well I have these parts, but I don't want them. You want them, you need them. So what if I gave them to you? How would that work?' And apparently, based on their research this is actually viable," Simpson proposed. (Fox News)

Loudon County School Bosses: Enabling Sexual Predators & Lying About It

 * Loudoun County in northern Virginia is the epicentre of the parents’ rights movement in the US. School officials in Loudoun have aggressively pursued a cultural agenda, introducing children to ideas about critical race theory and gender-identity ideology, over the heads of parents. An enduring image from that battle came from a raucous Loudoun school-board meeting in June 2021, when Scott Smith, a father of a high-school student, was wrestled to the ground by police and arrested. Smith was angry that school officials had remained silent about the rape of his daughter in the girls’ bathroom by a ‘genderfluid’ teenage boy wearing a kilt.

That image of Smith being arrested was used by the media to portray the parents’ movement as extreme and violent. The National School Boards Association cited Smith’s arrest in a letter it sent to President Biden in September 2021, which called for protesting parents to be treated akin to domestic terrorists. In turn, that letter spurred attorney general Merrick Garland to direct the FBI to investigate threats against school officials and teachers.

Smith and other protesting parents have now been vindicated. A special grand-jury investigation found last month that Loudoun school administrators attempted to cover up two sexual assaults in the district, both committed by the same ‘genderfluid’ boy. Following the publication of the grand jury’s report, Loudoun schools superintendent Scott Ziegler has been fired. He also faces three criminal indictments.

The grand-jury report is scathing about Ziegler and other officials: ‘We believe that throughout this ordeal LCPS [Loudoun County Public Schools] administrators were looking out for their own interests instead of the best interests of LCPS.’ The cover-up began right from the start. After his daughter was sexually assaulted in May 2021, Smith went to Stone Bridge High School to get answers, but was escorted out of the building by administrators. Ziegler then sent a letter to parents warning them about Smith, while leaving out any mention of the rape in the bathroom.

A month later, at that infamous school-board meeting where Smith was dragged out, Ziegler was directly asked whether any students had been assaulted in school bathrooms. ‘To my knowledge, we don’t have any record of assaults occurring in our restrooms’, he replied. That was a lie, says the grand jury. And the rot ran deep – not only did Ziegler know, but so did other administrators. Board members kept quiet at that noisy June meeting, despite knowing that Ziegler’s response was false. (spiked!)

Drag Queens in the Schools, Libraries and Now Your Zoo?

* The "Drag Show" phenomenon—in which adult men dress up in scantily clad women's clothing, gaudy makeup, and often wear female prosthetics to mimic women—has evolved past adult night clubs and forced its way into children's spaces under the guise of "family-friendly" events. Despite what the hosts of these events would have you believe, there is nothing family-friendly about them. Simply put, they are glorified strip shows and they are giving your kids a front row seat to watch.

I first exposed these predatory events last year at the "Mr. Misster" Bar in Dallas, Texas, which brought national attention to the issue. Like the majority of "family-friendly" drag shows, the Mr. Misster event featured performers that stripped and danced in front of kids, all while the parents sat back, sipped their cocktails, and handed dollar bills to their children to tip the drag queens on stage.

Despite widespread criticism of this event, "family-friendly" drag shows have spread like wildfire across the country and made their way into Drag Queen Story Hour at your local library and most recently the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. (Fox News)

The Leftists Now Want to Mask & Diaper Your Cows

* A Tennessee farmer condemned the idea of forcing cows to wear masks and diapers to contain their methane emissions, saying the people who came up with the idea have "gone to loony town."

French dairy giant Danone announced in mid-January it is considering putting masks on cows to trap their burps in an effort to reduce methane emissions by 30% come 2030. In the future, cows could also be forced to wear diapers to trap their flatulence.

Stephanie Nash called the whole thing udder madness Wednesday on "Tucker Carlson Tonight." (Fox News)

Are You Conservative? Then Forget Teaching as a Career

* That the Left has taken over public education (and most private education) in America is common knowledge. But the extent to which it has solidified its grip, and is in the process of driving out all non-conforming thought, may not be.

This is the kicker: in order to teach in Minnesota, you will need to sign on to theories of “power, privilege, intersectionality, and systemic oppression,” and teach students to be left-wing activists...

Consistent with the local curriculum and state and local academic standards, the teacher creates demonstrates the ability to create opportunities for students to learn about power, privilege, intersectionality, and systemic oppression in the context of various communities and empowers learners to be agents of social change to promote equity.

So unless a prospective teacher promises to inculcate students in trendy far-left dogma, he or she won’t be licensed in Minnesota. We all know that our country is in trouble, but the rot goes far deeper than most realize. (John Hinderaker)

The Latest Leftist Lunacies (Part 1)

VP Harris Hopes You'll Forget What the Declaration of Independence Says

* Vice President Kamala Harris left out mentioning the right to life when quoting the Declaration of Independence on Sunday during a speech in support of abortion access. Harris' remarks in Tallahassee, Florida, came on the 50-year-anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision on Roe v. Wade, which granted women the right to an abortion nationwide. The anniversary is the first since the decision was overturned in June 2022, allowing states to set their own abortion laws.

But in Harris' speech, she quoted the Declaration of Independence in saying that Americans are entitled to the right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness, notably ignoring how that the phrase also states Americans are granted the right to life. (Fox News)

Here Come Your "Green" Blackouts

* Why, after many decades of grid stability and reliable energy, are we suddenly talking about blackouts? The answer is obvious. Across America, reliable coal and nuclear power plants are being retired, and supposedly replaced by “green” wind and solar energy. This is frankly absurd, because an intermittent energy source that works less than half the time (wind) or rarely (solar) can’t possibly replace reliable, 24/7 electricity, no matter how many billions we spend." (John Hinderaker)

Even A Democrat Politician Mourns the Death of Free Speech

* “We've entered into this period of American history where the range of permissible thought and speech has so narrowed that if you depart from it at all you are, you're labeled, you are censored, and you are silenced,” retired Democrat Sen. Robert Torricelli told Just the News earlier this month. "It's incredibly dangerous. And the odd thing about it is the very institutions which have been the safeguard of American free thought and speech — American universities, think tanks, the media — are the worst offenders."

Oxford residents will soon be prisoners of their own neighborhoods

* This is one of those stories that you’re certain is from the Babylon Bee, and that is stunning in its implications when it turns out to be the truth. In this case, the truth is that, in accordance with UN and WEF climate recommendations, the city of Oxford (home to the famed university) approved plans mandating that citizens may not drive more than 15 minutes distance from their homes without permission. It’s called the “15 Minute City” and is intended to reduce auto emissions. Mostly, though, it will reduce liberty, which is what climate change madness has always been about. (Andrea Widburg)

No, the Democrats' January 6 Hype Doesn't Pass the Smell Test

* Rogan O’Handley posted a text message from Nancy Pelosi’s staff secretly editing the J6 security plan for the US Capitol and then telling the House Sergeant at Arms to “please act surprised” when the final draft was published. The House Sergeant at Arms responded, “I’m startled!” to the request showing his willingness to play along. This is more evidence that the January 6 disruptions were planned in advance. (Jim Soft, Gateway Pundit)

Pure, Free, and Green? Hardly.

* One of my favorite indicators of ignorance are the people who buy personalized license plates, or affix stickers, for their electric cars that say “Emission Free.” Even if you ignore the enormous environmental impacts associated with manufacturing an electric car (which are significantly higher than a gasoline-powered car), if you live in a state that generates a lot of its electricity from coal, you are essentially driving a coal-powered car. The next most ignorant view is that at least you don’t have to buy expensive gasoline! People seem to forget that electricity isn’t free, from whatever source. (Steven Hayward)

Biden Administration Continues to Support Jews Being Barred from Visiting Their Holiest Site

* How do you make apartheid sound good? Easy. Just call it the “historic status quo”.

Under Muslim rule, the historic status quo by the invaders was to ban Jews from their own holiest site, the Temple Mount. When Jerusalem was liberated, there was a vocal insistence by the Muslims who had launched a war to destroy the Jewish State and by the “international community” that Jews continue to be barred from their own holy site in the name of the “historic status quo”. And if that sounds too unbelievable, here’s Ned Price, Biden’s State Department spokesman saying that Jews must continue to be banned.

So let me say broadly on the first question that the United States stands firmly for preservation of the historic status quo with respect to the holy sites in Jerusalem. We oppose any unilateral actions that undercut the historic status quo. They are unacceptable. The President has previously underscored the need to preserve that historic status quo at the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount, as has the Secretary. We have done so repeatedly with our Israeli partners; we have done so repeatedly with our Jordanian partners, whose special role as custodian of Muslim holy places in Jerusalem we deeply appreciate. That is a message we will continue to reinforce.(Front Page Magazine)

Joe Biden: A Wall for Me but Not for Thee

* President Biden's taxpayer-funded wall for his Delaware vacation home is getting built while he continues to voice his staunch opposition to building a wall at the southern U.S. border.

Photos obtained exclusively by the Daily Mail show that construction on the wall around Biden's Rehoboth Beach home began last week. The wall is expected to cost taxpayers $490,324 because it is being funded through a government contract via the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). (Fox News)

R.I.P. Religious Freedom

“So, are you praying?” asked the British policeman to the woman who had been standing quietly across the street from an abortion business in Birmingham.

“Well, I’m not saying anything.  But, yes, I’m praying in my mind.”

“So, you are praying?” the policeman repeated.

“Well, yes.”

“Then you’ll have to come to the station with us, ma’am.”  And he put Isabel Vaughn-Spruce, a local leader of 40 Days for Life, under arrest.

Tragically, denials of what have historically been the sacred freedoms of religion, speech, assembly, and conscience are happening more and more as leftist tyrants and their all-too-willing toadies in the press, schools, business, and government bureaucracies ramp up their intolerance of the ideals of Western civilization, Christianity, and Christians.

We have, of course, been dealing with this sad injustice for awhile now. Bakers, innkeepers, and florists are denied the freedoms of religion and conscience. Coaches cannot pray with their teams (no matter how willing the student/athletes are to do so) and valedictorians are not allowed to mention Jesus to their classmates. Wearing a Christian T-shirt gets you thrown out of the mall, the school, the public library, the company picnic. And on and on.

Indeed, the arrest of Mrs. Vaughn-Spruce provoked a vivid reminder of a similar situation I encountered a few years ago outside the Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C.  It was the night before the March for Life and Claire and I were in town with three of our Omaha colleagues for the event.

But on the night before the March, we had gone to spend a few minutes in prayer outside the U.S. Capitol, the Senate and Congressional offices, and now we were at the Supreme Court.  It was late.  It was very quiet.  There was no one besides the 5 of us on the whole plaza. But just a few seconds into our corporate prayer, one of the Supreme Court police (yes, they’ve got their own) interrupted us and told us that we couldn’t pray there. Though incredulous and angry, I was calm, respectful, and very courteous in my response…as was he. Here’s how it went:

“Officer, thanks for checking on us. But let me ask, did I hear you correctly that we aren’t allowed to pray here?”

“That’s right.”

“Good grief. May I respectfully ask by what authority you make this remarkably un-American demand?”

The Supreme Court policeman was a bit disconcerted.  “Look, I know it doesn’t seem right but they’ve told us not to let crowds gather here or to let anyone do any demonstrating.”

“Officer,” I spoke gently, “are you considering five people a crowd, especially when we’re the only ones in this whole plaza?  And do you really interpret the five of us quietly standing here a demonstration? And I haven’t even mentioned you telling us we can’t pray!”

“I know it doesn’t seem right, sir. But I’m just following orders.”

“Okay, let me ask you this -- when I saw you coming across the plaza, it looked to me like you were already determined to chase us away.  But what if we were simply tourists enjoying the sights of D.C.? Would you have ordered us to leave?”

“No, of course not; that would have been fine.  But I could tell that you were praying by the way you had your heads bowed.”

“Wow; that’s interesting. So, let me get this straight; you’re suggesting that it wasn’t the prayer itself that bothered you. It was seeing us in a posture of prayer.”

“Yes, I guess so.  Because the way you looked, anybody could see that you were praying. And that’s I when I could get in trouble.”

“Got it. But I’ll bet you’ll agree with me that with all the murders and the rapes and the robberies in this city, you’ve got to feel at least a little silly for telling us that praying in this empty place at night is the crime you’re determined to prevent.” He looked kinda’ crestfallen at that and so I followed up quickly, “Look, I’ve got an idea. You and I are not going to settle here tonight the Constitutional legality of our freedom to assembly. And I have no desire to get you or me or any of my friends here in trouble. So, here’s my suggestion.  Why don’t you walk away and leave us alone for another few minutes.  I promise we won’t get on our knees or bow our heads or intertwine our fingers.  We will look just like tourists -- tourists that are simply appreciating the beauty of the Supreme Court lit up at night and thinking about the things it has traditionally stood for…things like, say religious freedom and other stuff!  Then you walk back by here in ten minutes and we will be gone. What do you say?

“I guess that would be okay.  ‘Cause, you know, I don’t want to be a hard-case about all this.  Still, I’m pretty sure that when I walk away, you folks will probably start praying again.”

I smiled.  “But, officer, even if we were so bold to do that, you wouldn’t know.  Nobody would know.  And why? Because you came over here and warned us against assuming a posture of prayer. Mission was accomplished. I promise we won’t do that.  And, like I said, we’ll just be here a few minutes more.  How about it?”

The fellow paused a moment.  “Okay, goodnight, folks.”  He finally walked away and left us to finish our prayers (abstaining from a prayer posture, of course) before we headed back to our hotel. It was a memorable night, for even though we managed to escape penalties for praying in the public square, it was a clear warning of what was coming. And, as I suggested, that incident came back in a rush when I watched the video of Mrs. Vaughn-Spruce’s arrest.  “So, you are praying?  Then you’ll have to come with us.”

My friends, because of the accelerating hatred of the world for God and because the Church has cowardly surrendered so much of her responsibilities to live holy, separated lives as well as to lovingly speak truth into the culture, this is going to keep happening. The powers that be will tell us -- “Sure, it’s fine to have your religion. We will graciously allow that. However, your religion must be a totally private (even secret) thing that finds no expression whatsoever in the public square, the schools, the marketplace, politics, the local library, etc. And, as long as your convictions give way before the ideals (and compulsory orders) of Science, Progress, the State, and the “enlightened elite,” you can feel as many religious feelings as you’d like. ‘Cause, you know, we don’t want to be a hard-case about all this.”

Lord, have mercy. Help us to hold on tight to a heavenly perspective regarding the trials of living all-out for You. Please be our strength and shield as we pursue godliness in our personal lives and as we undertake the light-bearing responsibilities we have been given as Your ambassadors.

An Important Addendum: A Take from Great Britain

I’ve asked our dear friend and pro-life colleague, Dr. Greg Gardner from Birmingham, to comment on Mrs. Vaughn-Spruce’s arrest and related matters.  His take is of the most profound value – enlightening and challenging and well worth the read.

I’ve been thinking a little about how to put into context the arrest of Isabel Vaughan-Spruce outside the Robert abortion centre in Birmingham for praying silently. It goes back quite a long way. In October 1967 the UK Parliament changed the law on abortion to make it permissible (not legal) to perform an abortion if certain conditions applied. The first abortuary to open its doors in the UK (in 1969) was a place called the ‘Calthorpe Nursing Home’ here in Birmingham. By 2007 it was doing around 10,000 abortions per year and was the largest single abortion provider in the country. The first prayer and pavement counselling that took place outside the Calthorpe was in 1989, kick started by Fr. James Morrow of Scotland. This continued on a weekly basis for many years. The abortion centre was eventually acquired by Marie Stopes International, now known simply as ‘MSI.’ It changed its name from ‘The Calthorpe Nursing Home’ to ‘The Calthorpe Clinic.’

Eventually ’40 days for life’ took up the challenge and would have prayer and pavement counselling for 40 days twice per year. Isabel was the local leader for this and was very diligent in organizing rotas, filling in gaps herself, if necessary, despite living a considerable distance away, exhorting people to come out and pray and generally leading from the front. She has been really inspirational. Originally the Calthorpe was open for business 6 days per week, then people began to notice that there would be some days when it would be closed and this happened more frequently. Finally, it closed its doors for good in 2019. This left only one abortion provider in Birmingham called ‘The Robert Clinic’ named after an abortionist. It is owned now by the largest National Abortion Provider called BPAS (The British Pregnancy Advisory Service).

After the closure of the Calthorpe, 40 days for life turned its attention to The Robert clinic and have had twice yearly prayer vigils there since 2019. These vigils which normally involve two, or maybe three people at most are typically attended by Catholics praying the rosary or other Catholic prayers, punctuated by offers of information to women or couples attending an appointment at the Robert Clinic. Since the place is located in a residential area, with houses adjacent and opposite, the prayer vigil can be seen and sometimes heard by local residents if they are walking past. Some of the residents have been verbally abusive and occasionally violent although others have been supportive. There are now several women who have come out in public saying that their baby was saved from abortion because of the presence of pro-lifers at the Robert Clinic and similar places. Isabel has held in her arms babies saved from abortion at the last minute. False accusations of intimidation have been circulated by local residents and subsequently spread by the local socialist MP.

In response to complaints by local residents and the police who get fed up with having to answer calls (by both sides) the local council in Birmingham decided to launch an online ‘consultation’ (see attached). The local police are funded by the local council so any perceived unnecessary increase in police activity is seen unfavourably. As you can see from the consultation, many of the questions are biased. For example, the question over whether there should be a bubble zone at all was not asked. Rather, it was assumed that they were going ahead with it and the questions were about whether the proposed area was too large/too small etc. I’m also attaching a letter written to local residents by Isabel and some of my responses to the consultation.

I attended a meeting in May with two representatives from the local council along with Isabel, her colleague Ben from ‘March for Life,’ a lawyer called Michael Phillips from the Christian Legal Centre and a local priest. The bias was plain. There was also a public meeting a couple of weeks later where the sentiments of the council representatives were clearly on display. At one point one of their team started to applaud something a resident was saying against ’40 Days for Life’ and then had to stop himself. The local ordinance was duly passed and so prevented any prayer and pavement counselling during the autumn campaign in October and November. There is however a Catholic church about 200 yards away at the other end of the road which is outside the bubble zone so people have been gathering to pray in the car park.

I have previously taken part in previous 40 Days for Life campaigns but decided not to join the latest one and keep a lower profile. One of my colleagues on the abortion/preterm birth paper is concerned that our academic credentials need to be protected so it is important to try to avoid misrepresentation – at least while we are trying to get published.

Since those meetings in the summer, Parliament has gone one stage further and voted for bubble zones outside abortion centres throughout the UK. Numbers of ‘conservative’ MPs also voted for this. Anyone breaching this could end up in jail. You have to ask what is the Conservative Party for since they have not conserved anything for a long time. In this respect they are not conserving free speech and they are not conserving/protecting unborn life or conserving the right of women attending abortion appointments to receive adequate information. The Conservative Party have also imposed abortion on Northern Ireland and introduced same sex ‘marriage’ and now ‘no fault divorce,’ thereby not conserving the status of marriage. Now there is a civil war in The Church of England about whether their clergy can conduct same sex ‘weddings.

Coming back to Isabel I think what she has done is to expose the absurdity and extremism of the bubble zone ordinance if you can be arrested for praying silently on the street (and possibly going to jail). What she has done in reality is committed blasphemy against the religion of secularism which doesn’t tolerate any rival.

Os Guinness has spoken about being against the world for the world’s sake. This is as good a recent example of this as you can find.

The Transgender Predicament (A Guest Post)

Our longtime friend and pro-life colleague, Dr. Ralph Kramper, recently penned some observations for a letter to the editor. Because he makes sage comments on the issue, I certainly hope the newspaper accepts and prints his letter. But in case they don't, I wanted to pass his remarks along.

 The Transgender Predicament

(Ralph J. Kramper MD, A Scribe of the Holy Spirit)

I was a family medicine intern and resident in the early 1970s.  I was introduced to “sex change” patients (adult males) when called to that care unit from time to time.  I recall that it was often a difficult place to visit to help.

Today, “gender identity” is at the forefront.  I would agree with those who say it is a predominantly psychological, mental issue.  However, we must call on common sense which tells us you cannot cure the “identity confusion” with surgery.

Sound reason and medical science tells us you “cannot make somebody into something they are not.”  We must all have compassion and love for those individuals and their families dealing with such a difficult dilemma.  We are taught in psychology that maturity in females arrived in the late teens, while it was mid-20s for many males.  Let’s be patient and give it the “tincture of time.”

One might ask, why is this a predicament?  Well, in medicine, there were problems and predicaments.  A problem was understandable and usually somewhat straightforward, usually solvable by human reason and thought.  Predicaments were very complex and often difficult to assess and provide appropriate analysis and treatment.  Frequently, I was somewhat overwhelmed by the scenario and couldn’t offer much advice.

I learned that only God could solve a predicament, but I could listen and pray.  Many times, I was later told how helpful I was in the process.  I knew how little advice I offered.

The transgender crisis that is pervading our society can only be resolved by listening to a Supreme Being and praying for His guidance.
