A new Gallup Poll, conducted May 7-10, finds 51% of Americans calling themselves "pro-life" on the issue of abortion and 42% "pro-choice." This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup began asking this question in 1995.
News stories based upon opinion polls are often skewed 1) by the way in which the questions are worded (note how Gallup didn't even poll this question until 1995) and 2) by the way those results are interpreted and reported.
When polls have been carefully and honestly presented, they have consistently shown that a substantial majority of Americans favor restrictions on abortion.
Nevertheless, this latest Gallup poll is significant in that it specifically measures the response towards the terms "pro-life" and "pro-choice." Imagine -- with all of the MSM's diligence in glorifying the latter term and castigating the former (that is, when they weren't ignoring it altogether and replacing it with "anti-choice" or "anti-abortion"), 51% of the public are willing to embrace the description of "pro-life" as their own.
It also is significant that the Gallup poll suggests an increase in pro-life idenitification despite the election of a Democrat with an extreme record on abortion. Who knows. Maybe it's because of the election of a Democrat with an extreme record on abortion.
There are other items uncovered by accompanying poll questions in the Gallup survey plus another done by the Pew Research Center that can be found in this story from the Gallup web site.
