Mark Morin, a good friend and fellow pro-life activist, wrote the following letter to the Omaha World-Herald after the newspaper printed a story, "From Mercy High to White House Halls." The story concerned a Mercy High graduate who had become enamored with Barack Obama, worked tirelessly for his election and was rewarded with a job in his administration.
It was a glowing piece but one that failed to ask a few basic (and very important) questions relevant to the marked divide between Catholic Church teaching and Obama's strong positions in favor of abortion, embryonic stem cell experimentation, homosexual activity, sex education, and so on. Mark's letter (which wasn't printed by the newspaper) dares to examine these issues.
Is Mercy High School really proud of 2003 graduate Katie Bradley? Why? I thought Mercy was a Catholic high school. Doesn't the Roman Catholic Church believe and teach that abortion is the taking of an unborn baby's life? But now Ms. Bradley is working for Barack Obama, one of the most radically pro-abortion presidents we've ever elected to the White House. He's already lifted the ban on withholding taxpayer dollars for overseas abortions.
What is the point of a Catholic education anyway? Are there not a lot of girls with Ms. Bradley's mindset coming out of the public schools? Why spend the money?
The Catholic Church needs to quit playing their little chameleon game when it comes to the murder of the unborn. 56% of Roman Catholics voted for Barack Obama in this last election. You can't have it both ways. Many rank and file Catholics do care about the unborn, but their high schools, colleges, and universities send out a mixed message to say the least.
Obviously, no school has any control over what a graduate does. But a school does have control over what they do, and in this case, the Mercy community, Creighton University, and the Roman Catholic Church should be distancing themselves from Ms. Bradley -- not lauding her.
