A Desperate Lack of Quality Nominees

Among the things we prayed about while standing together in front of the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic this morning (Quint Coppi, Don Kohls, Claire and I) was the dire political situation of our Republic. For we are in a most desperate state indeed, wherein an incompetent, arrogant and unpopular socialist serves as the nation's President. Yet the only rivals in the Republican Party given much of a chance to defeat him are the likes of Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. Both are lousy alternatives. And so we were praying earnestly for either a breakthrough from Rick Santorum, Michelle Bachman (even Rick Perry) or someone of true principle and skill to join the race at this late date -- Paul Ryan, Tom Coburn, Marco Rubio, Chris Smith, Sarah Palin.

The mess we're in, of course, lies in the sad condition of the American public. We are ignorant and apathetic. We're consumed by shallow and self-serving interests. Thus, we're easily led by politicians, professional educators, advertisers, journalists, Hollywood celebrities and other opinion leaders. And, let's face it, they're the ones who pretty much decides which political personages will be in the finals. The ones they are really afraid of are treated with disdain and mockery (or ignored altogether) and the public obediently fall in line.

But we keep praying and we keep lifting up our voice. For we know miracles do happen -- even in modern politics! After all, how else does one explain Ronald Reagan!
