Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson, the Democrat made infamous by the treacherous "Cornhusker Kickback" deal to force ObamaCare on the American people, has been among Barack Obama's earliest and most zealous supporters in Washington. However, even before this particular President, Senator Nelson's support for the big-spending schemes of the Democrat Party has been enthusiastic and solid. But because he must be elected by the generally conservative citizens of Nebraska, Ben Nelson must try and pose as a fiscal and social conservative when election season rolls around.
But the jig is up. That "Cornhusker Kickback" publicity is going to be just too much for Ben Nelson to overcome, especially because it directed Nebraskans to look closely at his broad pattern of fiscal irresponsibility.
But that hasn't kept the Senator from running for reelection anyway, trusting as he does the gullibility of the public and the false advertising he will buy with money from lobbyists and the DNC.
Nor has it kept the Senator from trying to once again present himself, despite all the evidence, as a conservative. Just a couple of days ago, for instance, Nelson told a reporter, “Debt reduction should focus on spending cuts..Raising taxes at a time when our economy remains fragile takes us in the wrong direction. That won’t create jobs in Nebraska.”
Debt reduction? Spending cuts over raising taxes? Creating jobs?
It's one thing to talk up these policies at reelection time, Ben. But it is sure another to go back and, in vote after vote after vote, support the budget-busting, economy-crashing policies of Barack Obama and the Democrats. Please, Senator Nelson, don't treat Nebraskans as complete fools any longer.
National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman Jahan Wilcox described the Senator's hypocrisy this way: “While it’s nice that Ben Nelson now recognizes the error of his tax-hiking ways, the unfortunate reality is that this comes too late for the thousands of Nebraska families and small businesses who will pay higher taxes because of ObamaCare. When Ben Nelson cut a backroom deal with President Obama and gave him the 60th vote, he didn’t just authorize a $500 billion cut to Medicare, but he also voted to raise taxes by $500 billion as well. Nebraskans deserve a Senator who is going to stand with them all the time, and not just when it’s politically convenient.”
And that's why I'm supporting for election to the U.S. Senate a genuine conservative whose credentials are proven by his record, not just his recorded statements. I'm supporting former Nebraska's Attorney General and our state's current Treasurer, Don Stenberg, a man with a lifelong commitment to the sanctity of life, religious freedom, the rule of law, and fiscal responsibility -- and a man whose character, work ethic and skill gets positive things done for the people of our state.
I believe Nebraska will be very well served by Senator Don Stenberg. Let's make it happen.
