Democrats Don't Say Anything Stupid (According to the Media)

If the mainstream media were to be believed, the gaffes and goofballs of Washington, D.C. all come from the Republican side of the aisle. Just think of the cottage industry the liberal press made out of Gerald Ford's reputation for pratfalls, Dan Quayle's spelling or George W. Bush's slips of the tongue.

Mistakes made by Democrats, even the most egregious, mean-spirited or just plain daffy are ignored altogether. Case in point? Jimmy Carter's panic over the killer rabbit.

I thought of this over the weekend when I noticed the media had refused to even mention Charlie Rangel's latest foot-in-mouth event, let alone pass it along to the morning shows, the late night comedians and the New York Times. And it wasn't that it wasn't newsworthy on several accounts. I mean, having a Congressman (a professing Roman Catholic Congressman) publicly say of the betrayer of Jesus, "Judas was ultimately forgiven. Judas became a saint, I think."

And this was said on Good Friday!

Yet this alarming faux pas wasn't worthy of press mention -- no more so than any of the dopey statements coming from Joe Biden , Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, or any of these flubs made by the Enlightened One himself:

“I’ve now been in 57 states — I think one left to go.” (Barack Obama 2008 campaign event, Beaverton, Oregon)

“On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today — our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.” (Barack Obama, Memorial Day commemoration)

“What I was suggesting — you’re absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith…” (Barack Obama interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, who corrected him: “Christian faith.”)

“The Middle East is obviously an issue that has plagued the region for centuries.” (Barack Obama, Tampa, Fla., Jan. 28, 2010)

"In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died — an entire town destroyed.” (Barack Obama, 2007 campaign speech on a Kansas tornado that killed 12 people.)

DBKP has more here.

The point, of course, is that the media has decided that like free speech, tolerance, fair play, and other things, stupidity only cuts one way.
