Dealing in Death: "Abortion Ship" Asks for Donations

Dr. Rebecca Gomperts, captain of the "abortion ship" called Women on Waves is asking for money so that her group's stock of chemical abortifacients can be offered (illegally) to women in European countries that limit abortion.

...Rebecca Gomperts said the ship’s crew could give out abortion pills that bring on miscarriage to women who are up to seven weeks pregnant. She would like to expand this so that women up to 12 weeks pregnant can avail of the service. She asked individuals last night to donate cash for the vessel.

"If people in Ireland want us to come, they should start donating money. Ireland and other countries, including Poland and Malta, are high on our list of destinations. We look at places where the ship can be most useful."

The ship hasn’t been able to carry out its work since 2004, when the Dutch Christian Democratic Government restricted it, not allowing it outside Amsterdam.

In a related note, the Irish case that sparked this latest promotion of Women on Waves has been decided as an anonymous teenage girl has been given permission by Ireland officials to undergo an abortion in Britain.
