Can Obama Win Over Religious Conservatives? He's Certainly Trying.

Barack Obama is aggressively reaching out to religious conservatives and though he has to hide and distort his record when trying too woo them, his efforts are paying off in positive publicity that no doubt he will further exploit in the coming months.

Below are excerpts and links (David Brody of CBN News and Steve Strang) regarding Obama's recent meeting with such leaders as Franklin Graham and Max Lucado. You'd do well to also look at this Jill Stanek post which not only discusses the meeting with religious conservatives but a more wide-ranging campaign whereby Obama, a fellow who is as abortion-happy as any politician around, is cleverly being re-cast as a pro-lifer!

Folks, I've been telling you for awhile now, the rules of the game have definitely changed during this election. Obama has made religion a very important part of the presidential race. He is reaching out to conservative and liberal religious leaders alike.

The fact that Billy Graham's son, his successor, met with Obama before he met with McCain says a lot about Obama's religious outreach efforts. They are being VERY pro-active.

Look, it's not as if McCain's religious outreach team isn't present. They are working behind the scenes too but Obama has been clear from day one that reaching out to faith voters was going to be a top priority. Obama's team made an important statement when they invited conservative religious leaders who WOULD NOT see eye to eye with Obama...

More now on Barack Obama's meeting with religious leaders in Chicago this afternoon. As we first reported on The Brody File, Obama is meeting with influential mega-pastor TD Jakes and pro-life Catholic constitutional law professor Doug Kmiec. Read more here on that. That's a big deal. A really big deal. The fact that these two conservative men are meeting with Obama may be a signal that Obama's campaign is ready to break down the traditional wall of separation between conservatives and liberals when it comes to religious talk. Read the discussion parts of the meeting here.

This meeting with Obama is made up of religious leaders from several denominations including Evangelicals, Mainline Protestants and Catholics. There are about 30 people there and these are leaders from Chicago and outside Chicago. Some in the meeting have shown their support for him. Others have not. I'm told that the meeting consisted of prayer as well and it lasted two hours. A campaign source tells me that besides Jakes and Kmiec, other religious leaders in the room today include Religious leaders include Rich Cizik with the conservative National Association of Evangelicals, best selling Christian author Max Lucado, Luis Cortes, Paul Corts, Cameron Strang, Bishop Phillip Cousin, Rev Stephen Thurston, Glenn Palmberg and Dr T Dewitt Smith. This campaign source tells me:

"Reaching out to the faith community is a priority for Barack Obama and will be a priority under an Obama Administration. This is one of several meetings he will have over the coming months with religious leaders."

Folks, this is an important development. It shows that the game has changed. Old rules don't apply. We're in uncharted territory. John McCain's religious outreach team has to now step to the plate and work hard for faith voters. It's not automatic.

From Steve Strang, the founder of Charisma Magazine:

Sen. Obama personally took time to meet each person and shake their hand. He’s not as large a man as I envisioned from seeing him on television. But, he’s warm and personable --- obviously one of the reasons why people like him. He seemed to remember names well. He hugged a couple of the participants—mostly the black preachers who attended. He also seemed to be on top of the issues; and he’s obviously very intelligent.

The questions were mostly “softball” questions in my opinion. I was concerned after three or four general questions that we wouldn’t ask the most important questions. So I raised my hand and he called on me. I said, “Senator, I want to ask a question I'm sure you are expecting regarding your position on abortion. I represent a segment of the church where nearly everyone considers the issue of supporting life to be the most important issue and where nearly everyone would be opposed to abortion. I want to ask what your stand on abortion is and if you believe what I think you believe, how you justify that with your Christian faith and why you think we should vote for you.”

Since his response was “off-the-record,” I can say that the time he took to answer was probably 15 minutes. He came across as thoughtful and much more of a “centrist” than what I would have expected. He did not appear to be the crazy leftist that is being supported by George Soros and his radical leftist friends. Sen. Obama looked me in the eye as he answered my question, almost as if it were a one-on-one interview. I had already read the chapter on “faith” in his book the “Audacity of Hope.” If you want to know how he answered the question, read that chapter. In other words, other than his demeanor and obvious attempt to win over the Christian leaders in the room, he didn’t say anything new.

I knew personally about one-third of the people in the room. I had heard of another third of the invitees. Some of the people from the more liberal part of the church were unknown to me. Those from the evangelical community tended to be more the ones who are interested in global warming and social justice as well as the two issues conservative Christians are known for—pro-life and pro-family...

But, we’re not electing the person we think is the most righteous. We’re voting on the one we think will lead America in the right direction for the next four years. Whether Obama, Sen. Hillary Clinton or any of the other Democrats had gotten the nomination, I believe the policies they espouse are dangerous not only to the security of our country if they are weak in the battle against terrorism, but they will hurt businesses if there is more governmental interference. And, on the moral issues such as the sanctity of marriage, it’s absolutely scary to think of what will happen if same sex marriage is allowed in this nation. At the same time, the next president will probably nominate not one but several Supreme Court justices to replace some elderly justices who obviously can’t live forever...

There’s probably a lot more that I could say about the meeting. But the most significant thing is just the fact that the meeting was held and that several dozen prominent leaders took time to meet with Sen. Obama who I believe won over the loyalties of many.

I urge Sen. John McCain to have a similar meeting—or several such meetings. There is a lot of latent support for him in the Christian community. But after being “still armed” by the McCain camp, while being wooed by the Obama camp, this may be the first time a majority of evangelicals will vote for a Democrat for president since Jimmy Carter, who talked of being “born again” and got many evangelical votes in 1976...

Doesn't the MSM Want to Get Their Stories Straight?

Laura Echevarria describes a couple of galling examples of how reporters (and their editors) not only distort the truth but do so with comical arrogance...or rather, it would be comical if the media's mistakes weren't as influential as they are.

The examples both come from the Orlando Sentinel and concern 1) the wildly incorrect (yet repeated) descriptions of Terri Schiavo as being "brain dead" and 2) the Sentinel's insistence that it knew the official policies of National Right to Life better than the organization itself.

More Persecution of Kazakhstan's Religious Minorities On the Way

Forum 18 is reporting that the new religion law to be passed in Kazakhstan is a travesty of justice, a law that will further promote the government's oppressive treatment of religious minorities.

Despite recent changes to Kazakhstan's draft Religion Law, the text still contains many violations of international human rights commitments, Forum 18 News Service has found. It is due to be presented to parliament for its first of three readings tomorrow (11 June) by the parliamentary Working Group.

"They put many distracting points in the draft to take away our attention from the real pitfalls," Aleksandr Klyushev of the Association of Religious Organisations complained to Forum 18. "We need to do everything in our power to stop this Law from being adopted."

Penalties for unregistered religious activity will be stepped up, and 50 adult citizen members will be required to register local religious communities. Local religious groups will not have the right to engage in educational, publishing or missionary activity.

Kamal Burkhanov, who leads the Working Group, defended the restrictions on sharing one's faith in public. "Do people go to the toilet on a bus?" he told Forum 18. "No, they go to a toilet. Therefore whoever needs to meet their religious needs should go to a synagogue, mosque or a church." He showed no sympathy for those - like Baptists - who are often fined for unregistered religious activity. "They should not violate the law."

Burkhanov said the OSCE's review of the draft Law has not yet been received, but he claimed that any criticism of any provisions would be taken into account...

Earlier versions of the draft Law were fiercely criticised by many religious communities – including Lutheran, Baptist, Catholic, Hare Krishna and other representatives – as well as by legal specialists and human rights activists... A Working Group draft from 2 June – which Forum 18 has seen – removes or softens some of the provisions that clearly violate Kazakhstan's international human rights commitments, but many violations of these commitments remain.

When Do We Get Our Apology?"

"In a historic speech," the Associated Press reports from Ottawa, "Prime Minister Stephen Harper apologized Wednesday to Canada's native peoples for the longtime government policy of forcing their children to attend state-funded schools aimed at assimilating them."

James Taranto asks, "We're sure this is long overdue, but what about us? We were forced to go to government schools. When do we get our apology?"

Why the High Gas Prices? Ask Al Gore.

The Founder of the Weather Channel once again challenges Al Gore and his minions to produce evidence of man-made global warming. Furthermore, in these strong remarks San Diego Chamber of Commerce, Coleman throws the fault for our high gas prices at the feet of the ultra-environmentalists who have forced America into energy dependency.

You may want to give credit where credit is due to Al Gore and his global warming campaign the next time you fill your car with gasoline, because there is a direct connection between Global Warming and four dollar a gallon gas. It is shocking, but true, to learn that the entire Global Warming frenzy is based on the environmentalist’s attack on fossil fuels, particularly gasoline. All this big time science, international meetings, thick research papers, dire threats for the future; all of it, comes down to their claim that the carbon dioxide in the exhaust from your car and in the smoke stacks from our power plants is destroying the climate of planet Earth. What an amazing fraud; what a scam.

The future of our civilization lies in the balance...

On a day when I've already criticized a couple of news stories for incomplete and biased reporting on abortion issues (see below), I'm pleased to say this Chandler Brown story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is an example of the kind of balanced, sensitive news coverage on the topic we would love to see more of. It's brief so I reprint it below.

And, of course, as you read the story, you've got to be asking yourself, "How many times is this kind of thing happening every day in abortion clinics?" For when officials refuse to step in and enforce the laws regarding minors and abortions (unlike their policies dealing with minors involved with alcohol, cigarettes and other matters), you know the abortion profiteers are going to skate around any law that might lighten their coffers.

A Hall County woman is serving a year in jail for pretending to be a girl's mother when she signed off on the girl's abortion. In reality, Cindi Cook was the mother of the girl's boyfriend, who also was 16 when she became pregnant in early 2007.

Displeased that the baby would ruin her son's chance of going to college, Cook, 44, pressured the 16-year-old girl to have the abortion in the spring of 2007, found a clinic that would do it without her present, and paid for the procedure, DeKalb Solicitor General Robert James said Wednesday.

Last week, a judge sentenced Cook to a year in jail — the maximum for a misdemeanor — for interfering with custody and violating a parental notification law. "This conduct is reprehensible," James said. "There's not a parent anywhere who'd be OK with what she did."

James said his office is now investigating whether the facility — Northside Women's Clinic in Chamblee— broke a state law that required parental notification when a girl under the age of 18 has an abortion. According to its Web site, Northside Women's Clinic offers abortions through the 15th week of pregnancy, usually in about 10 minutes. A woman who answered the phone Thursday morning said the clinic had no comment and did not have an attorney. She would not give her name or title.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is not identifying the girl because she is a minor. More than a year after the abortion, "she's still struggling with the loss of the baby," said Fenn Little, her family's attorney. "She's getting better, but there's going to be a lot of counseling and issues that have to be addressed."

Through their attorney, the girl's parents issued this statement: "The actions of both Cindi Cook and the Northside Women's Clinic have affected our daughter's life with much pain this past year because of the loss of her baby. It was a sense of helplessness. As for us, they took away our right to be there and help our daughter during a time when she needed us most. The outcome of the trial is a positive step forward in the long healing process that we must go through as individuals and as a family."

Abortion "Medication" Kills Two

There are many lessons to be learned from the tragic case of Manon Jones, the 18-year old British girl who died from a botched abortion three years ago but whose legal inquest was just held in Flax Bourton. Among the grave mistakes Manon made which others should carefully avoid are Manon's abandonment of her Christian teaching to become "besotted" with a Muslim college boy and become sexually involved with him. The worst decision then followed, submitting their preborn child to the cruel butchery of an abortionist.

It's interesting to note that the Mail (U.K.) news story gives no information about the abortionist or even the abortion center where the malpractice occurred. But an even worse example of the newspaper's protection of the abortion industry is the description of the prostaglandin abortifacient which killed Manon's baby and ultimately Manon herself as..."medication."

Mrs Jones travelled to Bristol on June 11, 2005 to be with her daughter, who had taken medication to terminate the pregnancy the day before. She said: 'She was scared. It was a very emotional experience for us both to witness her pass her baby and my grandchild into the bedpan.'

The powerful, deadly chemical that caused the awful moment just described could be properly called many things. But "medication" isn't one of them.

Following the abortion procedure, Manon was sick and bleeding excessively. But in a subsequent visit to the hospital (the story doesn't indicate whether it was Bristol's Southmead Hospital where Manon passed away or another hospital), she was told everything was normal.

It wasn't.

Yet thus assured, Manon went ahead with her plans to travel abroad with friends for a holiday. Her condition worsened still so she came back to England and was booked into the hospital. She died four days later. As the newspaper describes it:

When Mrs Jones arrived her daughter had already been sent to the intensive care unit, following seizures and cardiac arrest.

Mrs Jones said: 'I stayed with her at the bedside all day and all night and gradually realised that Manon had already left us and was not likely to recover'. Over the next few days the family and Mr Muzzafar sat with Miss Jones. Mrs Jones said: 'We kept talking to her, stroking her soft hair, holding her bruised hands clinging to any hope that she might pull through somehow while the doctors kept her vital organs stable and carried out various tests.'

On June 27 doctors took the decision to turn off Miss Jones' life support. Dr Hugh White told the inquest a post-mortem examination revealed Miss Jones died of hypovolemia, an abnormal decrease in blood volume and shock caused by retaining the embryo.

"Moderate" Democrats Are Bothered by Obama...But Not Nebraska's Ben Nelson

Oklahoma Congressman Dan Boren describes Barack Obama as the country's "most liberal senator." And so, though Boren is a Democrat, he has no plans to endorse Obama for President. "We're much more conservative" in eastern Oklahoma, Boren said. "I've got to reflect my district."

Obama's extreme liberalism poses problems for other Democrats in conservative areas as this AP story describes.

So why did Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson jump early on the Obama bandwagon? He obviously knows Obama's remarkably leftist record on economics, on defense, on abortion and other social issues. In a brazen bow to partisan politics over principles (perhaps principles that Senator Nelson only claims to hold), he touts Obama's personality, freshness and rhetoric while ignoring Obama's actual record. And that record, if expanded to become U.S. policy, will be a disaster.

For Ben Nelson to endorse Barack Obama proves that being a loyal Democrat is more important to him than representing the opinions of Nebraskans, more important than his publicized "moderate" credentials, more important than being a responsible public servant.

Nebraska Planned Parenthood Shake-Up Continues -- Media Bungles Story

Any time a Planned Parenthood facility closes it is the cause for celebration. After all, Planned Parenthood is a racist, eugenics-oriented organization that is the nation's leading abortionist. They kill preborn children through barbaric surgical operations but also through chemicals and devices tragically labeled as mere "birth-control." Furthermore, Planned Parenthood is a leader in the promotion of teenage promiscuity, a social crisis that leads to alienation, rebellion, heartbreak, training for divorce, epidemic rates of sexually transmitted diseases and, of course, more abortions.

Planned Parenthood is a "bummer deal" all the way around.

So, yes I'm delighted to hear that the Planned Parenthood facility on 46th and Dodge is shutting down. But I'm wary of what that portends for Planned Parenthood's schemes for other locations. This sketchy report in the Omaha World-Herald, for instance, informs us that the organization will be opening another center somewhere in Council Bluffs. The report also fails to explain just what plans are in order for the other existing Planned Parenthood facilities. Indeed, the news report fails to tell us many things. But then, that's typical of the World-Herald who has long supported abortion and other anti-life actions. They've run interference for Planned Parenthood for years.

Note that this report, for instance, tells the reader that abortions are not performed in the existing Planned Parenthood location in Council Bluffs. That's very misleading because abortions were performed there as little as 10 weeks ago. (They stopped temporarily because of a botched abortion lawsuit involving Planned Parenthood abortionist Meryl Severson, a relevant factor that has never been reported by the World-Herald. That's not newsworthy? Also, Planned Parenthood officials are on record as saying abortions will begin again soon. They already have at the Lincoln Planned Parenthood, another item irresponsibly omitted from the World-Herald coverage.)

The story does mention that the two other Planned Parenthood sites in Omaha are still open (5310 S. 139th Plaza and 3341 N. 107th St.) and, in fact, will possibly see "increases in staffing and hours." But will they be performing surgical abortions there? The reporter doesn't bother to ask.

So, what does this mean for the sidewalk counselors from Vital Signs Ministries who have been ministering to the clients at the Council Bluffs Planned Parenthood for the last 2 years, ever since the 46th Street abortion mill closed? There are a few options including a shift to the grisly Bellevue abortion mill run by notorious late-term abortionist, Leroy Carhart. But we will certainly be keeping a watchful eye on Planned Parenthood's shady businesses too.

Brian Fitzpatrick is grateful to the alternative media for many reasons but one reason in particular, it's willingness to tell the truth about issues that the MSM treats with either distortion or outright omission, caused him to pen this Town Hall column. In the article Fitzpatrick concentrates on how the homosexual rights movement has pursued not mere protection but unjust preference. And it has won. Indeed, the wild success they've achieved thus far has emboldened them to prosecute anyone who dares speak against them. And they're winning there too!

An uncompromising commitment to the freedom of speech, once an honored hallmark of the left (and most definitely of the press) has been ignored almost completely when it comes to those who would speak any ill of homosexual action.

Writes Fitzpatrick,

Hedonism and homosexuality cannot be legitimized without displacing the Bible’s restrictions on sex and God’s design for the family. The revolutionaries are going about it the obvious way, in our litigious society—through the courts. By redefining traditional sexual morality as bigotry, the sexual revolutionaries are using the law to assail the rights of speech, association and religion of anyone who disagrees with them.

Using “sexual orientation” statutes and hate crimes laws, they are attempting to silence anybody who believes that homosexuality is a sin, not an acceptable alternative “lifestyle.”

Why aren’t the liberal newspapers and broadcasters reporting these stories? As politically savvy secular institutions that back homosexual rights, they may be reluctant to publicize religious victims of the movement..."

And so it is left for you and I, creators and consumers of the alternative media, to speak the truth in love about this and other issues unpopular with the MSM...at least, until they shut us down too.

"According to Barack Obama, Gianna Jessen Shouldn't Exist."

That's the provocative (but fair) opening of Daniel Allott's Wall Street Journal article exploring Barack Obama's record on not only abortion, but also on what surgical room procedures are proper following the abortion. As in "Uh oh. We tried to terminate this pregnancy but here is the baby, alive and kicking! What on earth do we do now?"

That's exactly the question which draws Gianna Jessen into Mr. Allott's excellent article. For Gianna, a delightful woman who I was honored to have as a guest on "Vital Signs" radio a couple of times, is a vivacious, pretty, talented, smart, tough and highly principled young lady...a blessing to everyone around her.

But the scene of her birthday created in the minds of a medical team the very question mentioned earlier because Gianna was an abortion survivor. Targeted by an abortionist utilizing a poisonous saline, Gianna yet "made it out alive" where the nurse on hand had her rushed to a hospital. Gianna weighed only a couple of pounds and had been severely hurt by the deadly chemicals, but she was alive. And because of proper medical attention ("Physician, Do No Harm!"), she stayed alive, thrived and grew into the lovely young woman whose personality, talent and spirituality now graces the world.

Remarkably, there are many others like Gianna who have somehow survived abortion and, like any healthy full-term newborn, need immediate and comprehensive medical care. But Barack Obama has voted not once, but twice to deny abortion-surviving babies their right to such medical care. In effect, he has voted against their very right to life.

Writes Mr. Allott:

As an Illinois state senator, Barack Obama twice opposed legislation to define as "persons" babies who survive late-term abortions. Babies like Gianna. Mr. Obama said in a speech on the Illinois Senate floor that he could not accept that babies wholly emerged from their mother's wombs are "persons," and thus deserving of equal protection under the Constitution's 14th Amendment.

A federal version on the same legislation passed the Senate unanimously and with the support of all but 15 members of the House. Gianna was present when President Bush signed the Born Alive Infants Protection Act in 2002.

When I asked Gianna to reflect on Mr. Obama's candidacy, she paused, then said, "I really hope the American people will have their eyes wide open and choose to be discerning. . . . He is extreme, extreme, extreme."

Green Conservatism: Newt Gingrich Points to Norway as a Model

Newt and Callista Gingrich recently spent several days playing tourist in Norway and have become convinced that this beautiful Scandinavian nation provides an excellent role model for other regarding the compatibility of conservation, environmental protection and responsible (and very successful) energy development.

We visited an island with 1.3 million puffins, watched reindeer running five feet away from us through a fishing village (it was startling), saw sea eagles which are enormous and were once endangered but have had a huge comeback. There are now 2,500 pairs of sea eagles in Norway due to ending the use of the pesticides which were decimating them (proving, in good Green Conservative fashion, that there are good environmental causes).

All of this in a country that has made itself the 10th largest oil and gas producer in the world by doing something that is virtually off limits in the United States: Drilling offshore for oil and gas.

The United States was a leader in the creation of the offshore drilling industry in the 1950s and early 1960s, but today it's countries like Norway that are leaders in the field. Norway's annual output of 1.6 billion barrels of oil comes exclusively from offshore drilling. Oil and natural gas are transported through a network of sub seafloor pipelines. Norway is the home to the world's largest natural gas drilling platform.

And the truly remarkable fact is that Norway has built this robust offshore oil and gas drilling industry alongside large and thriving fishing and tourism industries. Norway has avoided the "everywhere versus nowhere" trap that has paralyzed U.S. offshore drilling through a common sense approach that is textbook Green Conservatism.

In Norway, strong environmental protections were part of exploration, drilling and transportation of oil and natural gas from the outset. This initial environmental emphasis has built the sense of trust necessary to allow Norway to move to a cooperative, performance-based model rather than a regulation-based model like we have in the U.S.

Norway has relatively few laws, regulations and government agencies that govern offshore drilling. Their equivalent of our Supreme Court - the Hoyesterett - reportedly declined jurisdiction over offshore drilling on the grounds that it lacks expertise!

The result is a policy in which environmental concerns are carefully balanced with energy needs. Norwegians have put some areas off-limits to drilling. In some areas, drilling is carefully circumscribed. But the point is that drilling occurs. Environmental concerns have informed - not pre-empted-Norway's oil and gas industry...

It's been awhile since I've enjoyed a Frosty from Wendy's but I'm planning on doing so this Father's Day weekend after Kurt Oyer brought to my attention that participating Wendy's restaurants will be donating 50 cents from the sale of every Frosty to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

The Foundation is the only one of its kind, one dedicated exclusively to foster care adoption and it tirelessly serves to streamline the adoption process and make adoption more affordable for families. Their motto comes from the late Dave Thomas, founder of the restaurant chain and himself an adopted kid, "Do what's best for the child."

So, c'mon; it's a good cause and a delicious treat, so join us at Wendy's this weekend for a Frosty or two.

If Barack Obama got so stressed out over Hillary that he started smoking again, just imagine the angst he's going to be feeling when those 3 A.M. hot line calls come in to the White House.

Seriously, being unable to kick the habit of smoking cigarettes may not be that significant an issue if we were talking about the average Joe, but we're not. We're talking about the President of the United States. And what this bad habit reveals about Obama's self-control, stress, health, image, judgment, and even intelligence (hasn't he read the Surgeon General's blurb on the pack?) is certainly a relevant matter.

Tony Campolo's Jihad Fixation Focuses on the Wrong Enemy

Tony Campolo was leaning so far left that he fell over a long time ago. And when he did, he must have cracked up even farther. Thus, he's joined the likes of his friends Jim Wallis, Jimmy Cater, Bill Clinton and other liberal extremists who distort Christianity (Campolo now refers to himself as a "Red Letter Christian") and then use the distortion to attack not only political conservatives but the Faith itself.
