Murdered Missionaries: The NY Times Missed the Heart of the Story

The New York Times has published photos and brief stories about each of the missionaries and their Afghani colleagues who were murdered by the Taliban last Friday in a slide show entitled, "A Shared Sense of Purpose." I recommend it.

However, please note that even in this case, the Times editors could not overcome their longstanding tendency to marginalize Christianity, thus making the report not only a truncated one but a distorted one at that. The Times' comments are enlightening and moving...as far as they go. But as to the motivations and true purpose of these heroic missionaries (the Times calls them "medical workers"), the newspaper is silent. The words "Christian," "Jesus" or "gospel" are not mentioned in the slide show and "Christ" is used just once -- in a quote taken from missionary Glen Lapp.
