A string of electoral defeats and the great unpopularity of ObamaCare can't stop Democrats from their self-appointed rendezvous with liberal destiny -- ramming a bill through Congress on a narrow partisan vote. What we are about to witness is an extraordinary abuse of traditional Senate rules to pass a bill merely because they think it's good for the rest of us, and because they fear their chance to build a European welfare state may never come again...
That's what the editors of the Wall Street Journal have to say this morning about the political manipulation known as "reconciliation."
But it's not just the WSJ that thinks the scheme is unfair and tyrannical. So do leading Democrats.
At least, that's what they used to think...before they were drunk with visions of shoving ObamaCare down our throats.
Jeffrey H. Anderson has assembled a string of quotes from these Democrats about "reconciliation" over at National Review Online's "The Corner" which you gotta' see. In fact, they are priceless to tell your Democrat friends and to use as seasoning in your calls to radio shows, letters to the editor, and e-mails to Democrat politicos.
Among those Democrats quoted who strongly castigate the dirty politics they now plan on using are Robert Byrd, Kent Conrad, Mary Landrieu, Russ Feingold, Blanche Lincoln, Byron Dorgan, Max Baucus, Harry Reid and, yes, Barack Obama.
Again, let their words come back to haunt them all across the country, if not from the newspapers and the networks, then from the grassroots up.
