MEDIAite has posted this picture taken outside the NBC Commissary at 30 Rock in New York City. It was originally taken by Questlove, the bandleader and drummer for The Roots (the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon) and tweeted to friends.
NBC has apologized for the sign and removed it. (As Lucianne.com expressed it, "If Fox had done this they'd be out of business.")
I must confess though that I don't have a big problem with the meal or the sign. It was, after all, prepared and promoted by a black chef who has since said, "It’s not trying to offend anybody and it’s not trying to suggest that that’s all that African-Americans eat. It’s just a good meal." Indeed. To deny that these foods are typically, historically favorites among African-Americans (and others of Southern heritage) is simply silly.
It's a case of racial sensitivity aimed at the wrong targets. For instance, why not be more concerned about the incredible abortion rates among black Americans, the numbers of black children without fathers in the home, the generational poverty created by the welfare state which inordinately affects black Americans, the violent crime rate among young black men and teenagers? These are the things that should move us to action, not playing around the edges of political correctness.
For a specific example of one group that is effectively addressing these concerns, see the post I have here today about the Hope Center in Omaha.
