Adultery, Payoffs, Hypocrisy: It's Washington Politics As Usual

Democrat Congressman Tim Mahoney (representing West Palm Beach in Florida) got his chance for a Washington post when his predecessor, Republican Mark Foley, was caught in a most ignominious sex scandal.

Foley resigned after it was revealed that he had sent sexual internet messages to teenage boys and Congressional pages. The resultant scandal was played very heavily in the national media (rightly so) and it helped secure the subsequent election for Mahoney who ran hard on a "Faith and Family" theme. Indeed, Mahoney's chief promise was to create "a world that is safer, more moral."

Well, it turns out that Mahoney's world is different from the one he promised to build for his constituents. For in Mahoney's world, there is not only room for adultery but also for hefty payoffs to his former paramour to keep her quiet about the affair.

Don't worry about the Congressman, though. He's getting plenty of help. Perhaps not for his marriage or any depression he might have experienced from such a dramatic plunge into sin and hypocrisy.

No, his help is of a different nature.

According to ABC News reporters, "Senior Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives, including Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), the chair of the Democratic Caucus, have been working with Mahoney to keep the matter from hurting his re-election campaign, the Mahoney staffers said."

Here's more.
