A recent report titled "Moral, but No Compass" commissioned by the Church of England argues that Britain's Labour government pays some lip service to Christianity, but actually favors Islam and other minority religions. The report describes the Government's "religious illiteracy" and criticizes it for ignoring the moral breakdown of society.
Typical of the government's attitude is Communities Secretary Hazel Blears belief that it just makes "common sense" for Christianity to be marginalized in favor of Islam, including spending more money and effort on Muslim projects. Why? Because of the threat from extremism and home-grown terrorism. In other words, pay protection to the intolerant, coercive and dangerous religionists.
Other criticism of the government have come from the likes of The Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, Bishop of Rochester, who said the collapse of Christianity had wrecked British society, destroying family life and leaving the country in a moral and spiritual vacuum, defenseless against the rise of radical Islam. He said ‘endless self-indulgence’ had brought an explosion in public violence and binge drinking. He mocked the ‘scramblings and scratchings’ of politicians trying to establish new British values of respect and tolerance.
Meanwhile, Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, said the Government’s policies on human rights had become a threat to freedom. Human rights did not work without a moral foundation. New Labour spoke of rights and responsibilities, but rights had come to the fore, while responsibility seemed to have fallen off the radar.
