Iran Police: Cracking Down on "Bad Veiling"

Vans full of Iranian policemen are prowling the streets of Tehran looking for "bad veiling" (women inappropriately clothed) as they now have extended strict Islamic dress code requirements to women in private offices and internet cafes.

These morality patrols have been going on for over a year with thousands of women arrested and taken to a "moral detention center" where they must sign a written pledge not to repeat the offense. They are not released, however, until family or friends have brought them more modest clothing to go home in.

The chief of police who announced the intensification of the campaign also said that police would be acting against "satan-worshipping" of other sorts but didn't describe exactly what that would entail.

The police insist that their drive has been "almost universally popular" with the public.

I can imagine.
