The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Lathrup Village police and a hazardous waste disposal company showed up yesterday at two abortion clinics operated by WomanCare, an abortion chain business conducted at six Mid-Michigan locations. Their job? To gather up blood-soaked gauze, improperly disposed surgical instruments, and other biomedical waste found in the dumpsters.
Pro-life activists who monitor the abortion clinics had prompted the investigation, claiming that their own search efforts had discovered improper disposal of biomedical waste, including remains of aborted babies. They also alleged that confidential medical documents had been tossed in the dumpsters.
According to the Detroit News story, Robert McCann, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, plans to determine the magnitude and seriousness of the situation before levying any sanctions. But it was unlikely the clinic would face serious repercussions. "Our priority is always to work with them and get them into compliance," he said.
No criminal charges were issued Monday because no laws were broken, said Lathrup Village Police Sgt. Vincent Lynch. His office planned to share the evidence they collected with the offices of the attorney general and Oakland County prosecutor. If any charges were filed, the maximum penalty would be a misdemeanor charge of improper disposal of medical waste, Lynch said.
"This ought to be a felony," Lynch said. "This is a neighborhood. Animals could get into the Dumpster they could drag the stuff around and you could end up with contamination as a public health issue far beyond the radius of the Dumpster.
"We have greater law enforcement for people who throw things outside the window of their car."
Not surprisingly, this isn't the first time that the WomanCare abortion mills have soiled the headlines. For instance, it was one of their abortionists, Alberto Hodari, who bragged to an audience at Wayne State University last December about misleading clients, not properly washing his hands between abortions, and other disgusting practices. And this LifeNews.com story reminds us of other travesties involving WomanCare including a botched abortion which resulted in the death of a 15-year-old girl, as well as her unborn child, and the dangerous misuse of digoxin as an abortifacient.
