Bush Veto of SCHIP, Contrary to What the MSM and Democrats Say, Was a Good Move for Children

In again vetoing the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) bill, President George W. Bush is taking some extreme heat from the Democrats and their pals in the mainstream media. But then, as is usually the case, the Democrats and the MSM are not telling us all of the salient facts. Indeed, rather than showing President Bush as a mean-hearted enemy of children, his veto underscores his willingness to take the heat for being a true champion of children.

"This bill does not put poor children first and it moves our country's health care system in the wrong direction," Bush said in his veto message. "Ultimately, our Nation's goal should be to move children who have no health insurance to private coverage - not to move children who already have private health insurance to government coverage."

There were other major problems with the bill, problems that would exacerbate the problems of American kids, not help them. For instance, Dr. Daniel P Moloney explains to readers of the Heritage Foundation that SCHIP had provisions for yet more "birth control" for minors (including abortifacients) while reducing even further the involvement of parents in their children's decisions.
