FRC alerts us to the misuse and overspending of our taxes by the government. Somebody needs to put the brakes on -- the American people aren't made of money.
As the U.S. Congress continues to deficit-spend their way into the future, clamor continues to rise for more transparency in government budgeting at all levels. A draft report from the Government Accountability Office, obtained yesterday by the Associated Press, examined one year's worth of travel expenses at just a dozen federal agencies and found at least $146 million that was unauthorized or unjustified. Most of the dollars were spent on first-class airfare for federal executives, who are obliged to use coach travel in most circumstances. Many ignore the rules, regarding the premium travel as a perk. Meanwhile, the liberal majority on Capitol Hill continues to press for new spending commitments and new taxes. Railing against the "Bush tax cuts," they are making no moves to extend such provisions as marriage penalty relief and the expanded child tax credit beyond their expiration date in 2010. The majority claims that an expanded state child health insurance program they want will be paid for with increases in the tobacco tax. But those taxes will not cover the millions of children who will be added to the program if eligibility for it continues to climb up to annual family incomes of $80,000 or more, as its sponsors contemplate.
