A little-noticed Washington event this past week saw the veteran pro-life champion, Rep. Chris Smith teamed with ABA/NBA star Julius Erving at a news conference urging quick approval of the Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act of 2005. This legislation would increase the abilities of scientists to conduct morally-sound research on umbilical blood cord cells. It passed the House last May with only one Congresswoman voting against it but the Senate hasn't yet got around to this much needed bill. The Senate version is S. 1317.
By the way, the news conference in which Smith and Dr. J. participated also included several kids who have already benefited from cord blood treatment for such conditions as Leukemia, Krabbe's Disease, and Sickle Cell Disease.
Urge your Senators to support S. 1317 to help advance ethical cures that do not destroy human lives.
