Flannery O'Connor on Ayn Rand

Anna Williams quotes Flannery O’Connor in The Habit of Being: “I hope you don’t have friends who recommend Ayn Rand [pictured at right] to you. The fiction of Ayn Rand is as low as you can get regarding fiction. I hope you picked it up off the floor of the subway and threw it in the nearest garbage pail. She makes Mickey Spillane look like Dostoevsky.”

Interesting.

Because I have never liked Ayn Rand. Both her plots and writing style are about as ponderous and dull as anything I've ever come across. And her much-vaunted philosophy strikes me as ugly and unrealistic.

But then I don't at all care for Flannery O'Connor either.

Now Dostoevsky and Spillane?

Them I like.
