Ben Nelson's "Porker" Award Finally Gets Local News Coverage (In the "Letters" Section)

I was pleased to learn that in Saturday's "letters to the editor" column of the Omaha World Herald, they printed (though in an inexplicably edited version) the note I had sent them based on a blog post from Wednesday.

I certainly hope Nebraskans are aware of the notable prize recently given to one of our state’s political leaders.

U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson was named January’s “Porker of the Month” by Citizens Against Government Waste, the nation’s largest nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in government.

The organization believed Sen. Nelson was a slam-dunk winner this time around for “his Cornhusker Kickback boondoggle, opening the door to a congressional stampede to try to fully federalize one of the most wasteful government-run health care entitlement programs ever conceived.”

Congratulations, Sen. Nelson.

Even though I was pleased to see the OWH print a version of my letter, I would certainly have preferred to see them report the story of the Senator's noteworthy "award" on their own. Still, I'm sure the Senator and his staff were rather irked at the paper's editors for printing even this.

The lesson, of course, is to keep citizen advocacy "alive and well" through your letters to newspapers and other media, businesses, politicians, clergy, and anyone else who needs to hear your views. So sharpen those pencils, kids, and write.
