The Old is New Again in Russia: Police State, Controlled Media, Rollback on Democratic Reforms

Former world chess champion Garry Kasparov, a key leader in the Other Russia movement, was roughly arrested and jailed yesterday along with 130 others in Moscow. The reason? They were participants in a peaceful (but prohibited) rally protesting the government's plans to redo the constitution in a way that would extend still further the dictatorial powers of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his corrupt Communist pals.

There were also protests in St. Petersburg and Vladivostok.

News reports of these major incidents were completely absent from the main television networks last night.

One is forced to wonder -- just how long before those Stalin statues go back up?
