Alexander Solzhenitsyn once described legalism as that stage of cultural devolution where the law protects the wicked rather than the just. 81-year old Robert Wallace of Wheat Ridge, Colorado must be thinking the same thing after being arrested for attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon because he fired two shots at criminals who were stealing his trailer.
By the way, the two thugs who attempted the theft were left uncharged (and unbothered) by police for months -- even though the police knew for certain they had done it! The men have long arrest records and are believed by police to be illegal immigrants.
For what its worth, Colorado does have a law allowing homeowners to protect themselves inside their homes. But prosecutors say the law doesn't apply to someone who is trying to protect their personal property.
For crying out loud.
There is a very real possibility here that Mr. Wallace will end up spending the rest of his life in prison -- this while real criminals work the system (legal loopholes, bail, suspended sentences, plea bargains, light sentences, reduced sentences) so they can continue their villainy, stealing the hard-earned wealth of others and endangering the well-being of society at large.
Goodnight, America.
