Iran's President Eliminates All Opposition

Charles Recknagel reports for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty about Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad's strongest action yet to rid himself of all political opposition.

Long prison sentences and even executions of his enemies apparently weren't enough for Ahmadinejad and so he announced the suspension of two prominent reformist factions, the Mujahedin of the Islamic Revolution which goes back to1979, and the more recent Islamic Iran Participation Front.

Iran is now completely in the grip of Ahmadinejad's cruel and expansionist "theocracy."

The Interior Ministry claimed that both groups were working against national interests, an increasingly common charge in Iran used by the thugs in power as they eliminate all political opposition. Thus they have been dealing out prison sentences of up to 6 years for reform leaders like Mostafa Tajzadeh, Davood Soleimani, Mohsen Mirdamadi, Behzad Nabavi and Fizullah Arab-Sorkhi as well as 10-year bans on any political or media activities.

Ahmadinejad's tyranny has been even more barbaric in dealing with those involved in the recent street protests. "Judges have handed down a dozen death sentences so far, and the first of those convicted of fighting against the state have already been executed."

And while these atrocities are going on, even though Mahmud Ahmadinejad's tightening of internal power forecasts much greater dangers to the international community -- the world's mainstream media and the President of the United States remain shamefully, stupidly silent.
