Among the points arising from the Notting Hill Napoleons' discussion Saturday night of Alexander Solzhenitsyn's November 1916 was the comfortability of modern Democrats with socialism. Most in our group are old enough to remember when Democrats, even if they wanted bigger government, considered "socialist" a most outrageous and unfair epithet. But no longer. Leaders like Barack Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and John Kerry strive for the most far-reaching socialist programs while openly waging war on individual liberties, property, strict interpretation of the Constitution, religion and capitalism.
And it's trickled down fast.
From the Gallup organization this morning comes the results of a recent survey showing that more than one-third of Americans have a positive image of "socialism." Among Democrats and what Gallup calls "Democrat leaners," the percentage having a positive image of socialism is 53%.
I guess the government school system is effective in teaching something.
