Having frequently been followed and having my phone calls monitored when traveling in a certain Eastern European country may have hardened me a bit to the experience I've endured in this country when my pro-life activities have, in various instances, been watched over by local police, federal marshals, and even the FBI.
I haven't been doing anything immoral, illegal or even uncivil in either place but, in the case of the "other" country, there are not the protections of justice which provide we Americans a "safety net" when we're on our own soil -- for a little while at least. The KGB, however, aren't known for their attention to such legal guidelines.
So no, having government agents keep an eye on me for peacefully protesting the killing of preborn kids here in the States hasn't been all that disconcerting. After all, I'm not doing anything wrong. I know that the government agents will, no matter their official directions or personal opinions on the issue, have to eventually report that fact to their superiors who will have to...aw, shucks...assign them to go catch real criminals.
With all this being said, however, I am getting a bit bothered about the increasingly intrusive actions of government agencies working under the Obama administration. We know the impact of liberals creating such monstrosities as Roe v Wade, the FACE Act, bubble zones, and so on and we know how leftist judges (and MSM reporters) throw the book at peaceful pro-lifers while coddling violent criminals whose cause is more politically correct: firebombing animal test labs, destroying property and risking the lives of sailors on fishing or whaling ships, disturbing the peace and social decorum with obscene displays, assaulting pro-lifers...I could go on.
We know that at least some of the key members of Team Obama consider pro-lifers a greater threat to the American public than Islamic jihadists but we hoped that some sense of sanity would prevail before they actually tried to operate on such numskull notions.
I guess we underestimated the depth of zeal on their part.
Here is a story about the U.S. Department of Homeland Security gathering data on law-abiding citizens (representing both sides of the abortion issue, by the way) in order to make a "threat assessment" regarding a Wisconsin event. And though government officials are covering their backsides because the folks ticked off about this include journalists and the ACLU, there have been no apologies -- and no promises that Homeland Security will leave reliable folks alone and rather, start zeroing in on the people and places where dangerous zealotry is really brewing.
