Do you sometimes feel that neither one of the adult Obamas is able to speak without being patronizing, self-centered and wildly exaggerating (if not lying outright)?
The latest case in point? Michelle Obama's comments in Denmark as she tries to help her husband pitch Chicago for the 2016 Olympics.
First of all, note the grandiose lead-in to her speech from the White House website: "First Lady Michelle Obama brought American pride to the Danish capital today, her visit only adding to the Olympic-sized fervor reverberating throughout Copenhagen — also in attendance was Chicago’s other first lady, talk show host Oprah Winfrey. The First Lady, eager for the torch to shine brightly stateside, shared some favorite childhood Olympic moments and reflected on how [sic] the importance of Olympic ideals in every child’s life."
Really, these guys need to get a grip. Even liberals are finding this "Olympic-sized" ego of the Obamas way too much to excuse anymore. And the line about the loony Oprah being "Chicago’s other first lady" implies that Michelle serves as the First Lady of Chicago in addition to her national role. Wow. Only the Obamas could be expected to shoulder so many heavy responsibilities.
And from the remarks of the First Lady of Chicago and the United States comes these gems:
"We need all of our children to be exposed to the Olympic ideals that athletes from around the world represent, particularly [at] this time in our nation’s history, where athletics is becoming more of a fleeting opportunity."
Fleeting she says? With school sports dominating student life, with ubiquitous Little League baseball and Pony football leagues, with every soccer field and basketball court filled to overflowing, with dramatic increases in American kids playing golf, and with a half dozen TV channels covering sports 24 hours a day, Michelle Obama thinks athletics "is becoming more of a fleeting opportunity?" Goodness, you've heard it said that the Obamas cannot address any issue without turning it into some kind of crisis. Now you see why.
"Funds dry up so it becomes harder for kids to engage in sports, to learn how to swim, to even ride a bike."
Huh? It takes federal funds or corporate grant money to teach a kid to swim or ride a bike? My parents (and yours) never knew such money was ever available for these tasks. Doggone it, they just taught us out of a sense of love and parental responsibility. So where do they apply to be reimbursed now?
Michelle, of course, has gone beyond goofy here. Even if she was just mouthing what some dolt wrote for her to say, she's made a fool of herself.
And one more thing; just how will bringing the Olympics to Chicago help bring funds to those "fleeting athletics" let alone those kids otherwise doomed never to swim or bike through life?
You can read the rest of Michelle's all too vapid remarks (the ones quoted by the White House) right here. Byron York has a few more lines from her speech in his article at the Washington Examiner.
