Going Soft on Crime: Another Aspect of the Suicide of the West

Criminals on probation commit a murder every week, according to official figures. In the past two years, offenders on probation have committed 121 murders, 44 instances of manslaughter, 103 of rape and 80 of kidnapping. The number of convicted criminals let off with a suspended sentence has increased. Government ministers have asked courts to hand down fewer prison sentences to ease prison overcrowding...

Meanwhile the new Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, suggested sentences should punish criminals and deter crime. He said the guilty defendant should always be frightened at the prospect of going to court.
