It's especially of interest to those of you in the Lincoln, Nebraska area but, for all the rest of us too, it's a notable example of how vastly different the sexual morality of the 21st Century promises to be from all those preceding it. It's the news that outspoken lesbian Barbara Baier (who along with her longtime partner is raising a young boy that they adopted) is attempting a move from the Lincoln School Board to Lancaster County Board of Commissioners.
As described in a laudatory paragraph from the web site of the Lincoln Arts Council: The Baier-Quenzer family is headed by a lesbian couple who have had a committed relationship for 17 years. Their six-year-old son, Robbie, is in kindergarten. The couple is sharing their story because they want to see prejudicial treatment and negative stereotypes dispelled. Ms. Baier and Ms. Quenzer say many gay people live in fear of being fired, forced out of their faith communities and rebuffed by their families if they come out, but they see people’s views change when they know average gay families. Both women work for the City of Lincoln - Ms. Baier, as a grant writer, and Ms. Quenzer, as the ombudsman. Ms. Baier was recently elected to the Lincoln Board of Education.
The writer obviously didn't intend any irony in her use of the phrase, "average gay family."
And, no surprise here, Barbara Baier is endorsed by Planned Parenthood Voters of Nebraska and Nebraska Research PAC, the latter group being dedicated to the furthering of embryo-destroying stem cell research.
