Dr. Philip G. Ney is a well known, well-respected child psychiatrist. He has taught in five universities in four countries (including the University of London and the University of Illinois) and has been both a hospital and university department chairman. He has authored or co-authored 66 scientific papers and 7 books. His wife, Dr. Marie Peeters-Ney, has worked at the University of Paris with the world-famous geneticist, Jerome Lejeune, and won an important scientific prize for her research into the biochemical causes of mental retardation. Both are also outspoken pro-life advocates.
Therefore, because of their expertise and because of the overwhelming interest of young people in the Harry Potter craze, I recommend this article they co-wrote for Catholic Insight in December 2003 which was recently reprinted by LifeSite News. It is entitled, "Harry Potter: The Archetype of an Abortion Survivor."
I found it quite fascinating even though I've not read J.K. Rowling nor seen the movies. If you have, I'm sure you'll relate to the Neys' insights even more. At any rate, the article poses important questions and gives meaningful insights for all of us interested in engaging our culture. Give it a read, won't you?
