In recent years Baylor University in Waco, Texas had committed itself to "Baylor 2012", a plan to return to its heritage as a Christian university while also moving to secure its standing as a first-rate research institution. Good idea. After all, even as one can walk and chew gum at the same time, a scholar can be objective, tolerant, well-studied and yet be a person of deep and biblically-centered faith. Even a cursory look at a roll call of history's great scientists, writers and other intellectual heroes proves this observation.
But Baylor seems to be balking at the challenge -- the most dramatic indication being a whopping 40% of their faculty members being denied tenure.
Rick Pearcey discusses this situation (along with links to a Baptist Press article quoting liberally from esteemed Intelligent Design theorist William Dembski and the pleasantly contrasting situation being established at Philadelphia Biblical University) in this post over at Pro-Existence. Very interesting stuff.
