Henry Louis Gomez' post, "On Illegal Immigration," presents some of the most relevant, common sense and hopeful ideas you'll find on this critically important matter. It deserves a wide hearing and I'd like to help that along by wholeheartedly recommending it.
A particular strength of his essay (posted on Cuban American Pundits) is his advice to Republicans to denounce racial prejudices and avoid nativist irrationalities. Instead, conservatives must honestly evaluate the history of the United States and learn to appreciate the vast (and ongoing) contributions made by immigrant populations.
Then some far-sightedness about such things as language and party affiliation is called for which will lead, Gomez hopes, to a deeper consideration of the moral and family values of Hispanic immigrants, their desire to learn English, their desire to start businesses, and their natural yearning for freedom and security for their families.
An enlightening, helpful piece.
