Here's a piece from Colleen Long for the Associated Press about New York's "Subway Rat," a fellow who has been arrested for sexual abuse and assault...uh...53 times.
It's good reporting but it is also disturbing on many levels: the nonchalant attitude the system takes towards such crimes; the staggering costs to taxpayers even when such criminals are in stir (about $100,000 a year);and the sheer number of offenders.
There's also the outrageous commonality of sexual assault in NYC subways to fret about. A survey done by Manhattan last summer found that 63% of those responding reported they had been sexually harassed in some way while riding the subways.
Makes your travel plans to see the Big Apple a bit wormy, doesn't it?
