Ruth Denzler sent over a challenging essay about the "emerging church" and it's sometimes irrational disdain for tradition, even for objective truth. I tracked the essay down to Ingrid Schlueter. It's a piece entitled, "Not Your Grandma's Church," and was originally posted on the Christian Worldview Network, a site where many other Schlueter articles can be found. Schlueter is a producer and co-host of Crosstalk Radio Talk Show and she blogs at Slice of Laodicea, primarily about various forms of heterodoxy which are increasingly finding a home in modern evangelicalism.
It is a thoughtful essay, wry and pointed as well. I recommend it.
And, just in case you think Schlueter is overdoing it a bit, take a look at these 2 video clips about the "emerging church" movement. They were originally done by PBS and show how shockingly free these folks insist on being from the heritage of the Church, from the disciplines of learning the revealed truths of Scripture, and from the obligations of holiness and service. Stressing one's emotional experience over objective truth and with a rebellious angst that denounces almost anything traditional, the "emerging church" movement is much too like the goofy teenager who just refuses to grow up.
