Unborn Child Killed in High Speed Chase

My brother Ric who still lives in my hometown of the Mile High City sent along this Rocky Mountain News story (via MSNBC) telling of a terrible automobile accident that ended a high speed chase.

A high-speed chase in Mesa County ended Tuesday in a head-on collision that seriously injured a pregnant woman and killed her unborn child, the Colorado State Patrol reported. The incident began around 8:16 a.m. when a trooper tried to pull over a Jeep Cherokee for speeding. That set off a 15-mile chase along northbound Colorado 65. The chase ended when the driver of the Jeep Cherokee attempted to pass a flat-bed semi, smashing into a Nissan Xterra.

The driver of the Jeep was identified as Logan Lage, 24, of Grand Junction. He sustained serious injuries. His pregnant passenger was taken to a hospital, where a doctor declared her child dead. The driver of the Nissan, Shea Lehnen, 26, of Collbran, suffered minor injuries, as did his one-year-old boy passenger.

The headline of the story was "Chase Ends in Crash, Killing Unborn Child." This prompted Ric to write, "The thing that struck me was how the media when referring to the abortion issue always refers to the child as a fetus, yet when they want to describe the drama and tragedy of a traffic accident, they go with the term, 'an unborn child.' The world [and the media] keeps spinning and spinning."

Right on, Ric. May God give solace to the young mother and thorough repentance to the criminal who so foolishly endangered them all.
