Persecution of the Church: Lest We Forget

Amid your prayers in this Thanksgiving weekend, please be sure to remember those struggling to peacefully, orderly live out their religious faith in the midst of unjust interference, harassment and persecution.

Below are just a few recent examples of the many that could be mentioned. And keep in mind that many more atrocities never become known to the outside world.

* Harsh fines imposed non-registered churches in Belarus for things like holding a harvest Thanksgiving service in the pastor's own yard.

* Hindu extremists with wooden clubs barged into a Christian worship service in the village of Wada, India and beat several members brutally enough that they required hospital treatment. When the pastor went to the police station to file a complaint against the brutes, officers detained him instead.

* During midday Mass at Mexico City's cathedral Sunday, leftist thugs from the Party of the Democratic Revolution interrupted the liturgy chanting slogans and threatening both parishioners and clergy. A decision was announced later by Armando Martínez, the president of the College of the Catholic Lawyers of Mexico, that the cathedral will not open again until the government can guarantee the security of worshipers.

* Another mob of Indian Hindus stormed a newly constructed church in Chattisgarh State, tied the pastor to a chair, beat him into unconsciousness, and set fire to the church.

* Concerning the intense persecution of Christians in Iraq, this discussion from the radio program Faith 2 Action features host Janet Folger interviewing William Murray from the Religious Freedom Coalition.

* Anonymous threats sent through the mail to young Christians in Peshawar and Charsada of North West Frontier Province of Pakistan warn them that they must convert to Islam or die. Given the violence already demonstrated against Christians here, these threats are causing immense stress.

Olympic Prostitutes? Vancouver Ready to Turn Its Latest "Trick"

I guess the disastrous "safe injection" program, that goofy government attempt to provide heroin and cocaine addicts with clean needles and nurse supervision, wasn't enough of an embarrassment to Vancouver politicians. Next up then? A plan to get the city ready for the Winter Olympics by setting up a bunch of legal, government regulated whorehouses to "service" the throngs of visitors.

Thank You, Mr. President: Wesley J. Smith on George Bush's Contribution to the New Stem Cell Breakthrough

Pro-life ethicist Wesley J. Smith reviews the huge ESCR funding circus in this National Review article. He also has a few important things to say about the new stem cell breakthroughs (in which human lives are not sacrificed) and how President George Bush deserves thanks in this affair.

Homosexuality An Easier Path for Today's Kids

Not only is this Boston Globe article an example of the MSM's increasingly strong bias for homosexuality, it is also a disturbing revelation of how the public schools are serving as recruitment and training centers.

...But today's gay high schoolers are discovering that declaring their homosexuality - and doing it at younger and younger ages - brings little of the stigma and complications that earlier generations faced...

Emboldened by his friends' casual reaction, Peck, a slim young man with curly brown hair, told his parents that he was gay. He was only 15. Their response was equally positive and accepting. His mother, Nancy Peck, who lives in Concord, says her only concern was making sure that Russell was "safe, happy, and healthy." Her son shared his news with friends at Concord-Carlisle that fall, joined Spectrum - a school-based discussion club about gay and lesbian issues - and continued, he says, to feel "very comfortable" during his remaining three years of high school.

In the relative ease of his coming out, Russell Peck represents what one educator calls the "next wave" of gay and lesbian teenagers: adolescents who have grown up with openly gay teachers, television characters, neighbors, politicians, and even parents and who take for granted the acceptance that earlier generations struggled to achieve...

As a result of these cultural shifts, gay and lesbian teens are acknowledging same-sex attraction at ever-younger ages and questioning the concept of both "coming out" and "the closet." Increasingly, their challenges look less like the public health crisis of the 1980s and more like the ones their straight peers have always faced: How do you know when a boy likes you (versus just liking you)? How do you ask a girl out? And what do you do when your mom hears about your new boyfriend from one of her friends at the supermarket?...

Promoting Abortion: A United Nations Priority

Though not a single U.N. human rights treaty mentions abortion, treaty bodies have pressured 93 nations 122 times to legalize abortion in the last decade, says the executive vice president of a lobbying group.

In this interview with ZENIT, Susan Yoshihara of the Catholic Family & Human Rights Institute (C-FAM), discusses a recently released document she co-authored with Douglas Sylva titled "Rights by Stealth." The white paper explains how tactics by U.N. treaty bodies are being used to promote the legalization of abortion without the awareness or consensus of member states. It's an important article -- one that I hope will encourage you to pray against these sinister actions of U.N bureaucrats and to keep raising the awareness of family, friends and politicians to the very real dangers the U.N poses to life and liberty.

Thanksgiving Matters at the White House

Here's a few very interesting Thanksgiving items direct from the White House to your house.

1) The first is a brief update on the Annual Turkey Ceremony including the list of nominated names for the two turkeys to be "pardoned" by the President. And on this page you'll find a transcript of President Bush's speech at the ceremony.

2) Here President Bush offers very moving remarks about Thanksgiving, America's history, our highest values, and more at Berkeley Plantation near Charles City, Virginia.

3) And finally, the formal Proclamation of Thanksgiving Day 2007 can be read here.

Don't Mess with Christmas: Lowe's "Family Trees" Fiasco

Blame it on the proofreader?

That's the story coming from Lowe's hardware stores whose new catalog tried to sell "family trees" instead of Christmas trees.

Frankly, it's awfully hard to believe that a major retail outfit like Lowe's releases it's most important sales pitch of the year without a very careful, very thorough, and very superintended vetting. And harder still when the apology and excuse didn't come until after catalog recipients let Lowe's know how ticked off they were at such an offensive (and silly) act of political correctness.

But okay; let's really stretch our credibility and accept Lowe's story that poor Mr. Grifolschticken from the Copy Editing Department slipped up and that he's to blame for the "family trees" fiasco. How does Lowe's explain then why the word "Christmas" was only used twice in a 56-page catalog selling...uh...Christmas stuff.

Thanks for the apology, Lowe's. But I still am going to do my shopping elsewhere this Christmas...and the rest of the year too.

Swift Kids for Truth vs John Edwards

ABC News Poll Shows A Huckabee Surge

Propelled by little more than his message and political skills, Republican presidential contender former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has vaulted into a statistical dead heat for first place in crucial, first-in-the-nation caucus state Iowa, according to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll.

Huckabee's surge is equal parts size and intensity, having gained considerable ground among key parts of the GOP base in the Hawkeye state — evangelicals, conservatives, weekly churchgoers and abortion opponents — with 50 percent of his supporters "very enthusiastic" about him, compared with 28 percent of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's supporters.

The affable underdog achieved all this on a shoestring budget with little national infrastructure and close to no support from the Republican establishment...

Huckabee's hurdle today remains the same one he faced last week when despite his more ardent opposition to legal abortion he lost the endorsement of the National Right to Life Committee to former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson: Few Americans are convinced he can actually win the White House.

In fact, only 42 percent of Huckabee's supporters in Iowa think he's going to be elected president.

"That's the hurdle I've had since the beginning, and it's also the one that's being erased by every month's standings getting better," Huckabee said. This kind of poll gives more people reason to think, 'Hmm, the guy could win.'"

In 1979, Huckabee says, Ronald Reagan was in fourth place in polls. "He was flat broke. They were living three to a hotel room, eating peanut butter, and nobody thought he had a chance. He had upset the Republican establishment. He certainly wasn't their candidate, and it looked like that he wasn't going anywhere. Now people talk about, 'Oh, the inevitable Ronald Reagan' — but that's not what was going on back at this particular point in time."...

Not Everyone Is Thrilled About Stem Cell Breakthrough

Dr. Tom Okarma, for one.

Despite across the board enthusiasm for the stem cell breakthrough announced yesterday, Dr. Okarma, president and chief executive of Geron Corporation, nastily dismissed the news, saying the new techniques were not likely "to bear any fruit."

By the way, Geron Corporation is a California biotech drug company that has spent $100 million on human embryonic stem cell research.

And, oh yes; the company's stock fell six percent Tuesday following the research announcement.

I think I see a reason for Dr. Okarma's distress.

Does the "Birth Control" Pill Cause Abortions?

The tragically misnamed "birth control" pill is used by some 14,000,000 million American women each year. The worldwide numbers reach over 60,000,000.

Wow.

That's an incredible amount of women using a very powerful drug -- a drug whose negative effects we are learning more about every year. Indeed, besides the issue of the pill's very serious side effects (which many scientists have established to include a greater risk of cancer), there is the crucial question of just how the pill "controls" birth. For instance, despite its primary action as a contraceptive, does the pill also act against a conceived child when "breakthrough ovulation" occurs?

The question of whether the "birth control" pill causes abortions has a direct bearing on untold millions of Christians, many who stand adamantly opposed to surgical abortion but who use and even recommend the pill. For those who believe God is the Creator of each person and the giver and taker of human life, this is a question with the most profound moral implications imaginable.

I have for years recommended a small book witten by best-selling author, Randy Alcorn, as the most careful, the most thoroughly researched, and the most easily read of all the studies available on this very important topic. It's simple title: Does the Birth Control Pill Cause Abortions?

Well, here's some good news. Randy Alcorn, the author of such popular novels as Deadline, Dominion, Lord Foulgrin's Letters and Safely Home (as well as non-fiction theological works as Heaven; Money, Possessions and Eternity; Pro-Life Answers to Pro-Choice Arguments; and The Purity Principle) is now offering a new book form edition of Does the Birth Control Pill Cause Abortions? for only $3.00 a copy. For multiple orders, the prices fall even more: only $2.50 each when 2 to 9 copies are ordered. $2.25 each for orders of 10 to 99. And so on.

It's a terrific offer, representing a great chance to pursue these critical questions...and to help others who need to do the same.

Does the Birth Control Pill Cause Abortions? can be ordered from the EPM website which is right here. And, while you're there, go ahead and check out the bargain prices of Randy's other books. You'll find them quite a bit less expensive than Barnes and Noble or your local Christian bookstore. And each one is a great read.

Lying in Wait for Victims: Planned Parenthood's False Front Tells a Lot

How can a community be at peace—enjoy shalom—while babies are being put to death down the street?

Albert Schweitzer in his book Reverence for Life said that we can either make history or suffer history. It all depends on whether or not we have a reverence for human life....

I have posted a few entries here concerning how the sneaks of Planned Parenthood came to Aurora, Illinois to open one of their abortion supermarts. I've also recommended the web site of Jill Stanek as a very helpful source for those who want to keep up with the story.

However, my young friend Dan Tate drew my attention to a Breakpoint commentary written earlier this month by Prison Fellowship Ministries President, Mark Earley, that gives an excellent overview of the situation -- and which includes some very thoughtful exhortations like those that open this post.

PFM's strong and consistent defense of the sanctity of life amid their splendid gospel outreaches inside America's jails and prisons makes them one of our favorite Christian organizations. May God bless them and their critical service for the Kingdom. Again, Earley's column is right here.

(By the way, the photo accompanying this post shows Earley (who served as a Virginia state senator and attorney general before being named PFM President), sharing the Word of God with inmates of a Texas prison.)

"Lead Into Gold": Scientists and Ethicists Alike Hail Stem Cell Breakthrough

The stem cell breakthrough hinted at the last couple of days and finally revealed today is another example of how God blesses a man's work (with all kinds of delightful effects on those around him) when it is done according to just and honorable principles. Below is an excerpt of the story as reported by the Associated Press and CBS.

Scientists have made ordinary human skin cells take on the chameleon-like powers of embryonic stem cells, a startling breakthrough that might someday deliver the medical payoffs of embryo cloning without the controversy.

Laboratory teams on two continents report success in a pair of landmark papers released Tuesday. It's a neck-and-neck finish to a race that made headlines five months ago, when scientists announced that the feat had been accomplished in mice.

The "direct reprogramming" technique avoids the swarm of ethical, political and practical obstacles that have stymied attempts to produce human stem cells by cloning embryos.

Richard Doerflinger, deputy director of pro-life activities for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, tells CBS News producer Steve Baltin it's a breakthrough that can be accepted by anti-abortion advocates.
"This is a win-win. This is completely acceptable ethically and also perhaps more promising scientifically and medically than embryonic stem cells have been in the past," Doerflinger said. "Sometimes by being creative, science can help solve the moral problems that science raises."

Scientists familiar with the work said scientific questions remain and that it's still important to pursue the cloning strategy, but that the new work is a major coup.
"This work represents a tremendous scientific milestone - the biological equivalent of the Wright Brothers' first airplane," said Dr. Robert Lanza, chief science officer of Advanced Cell Technology, which has been trying to extract stem cells from cloned human embryos.

"It's a bit like learning how to turn lead into gold," said Lanza, while cautioning that the work is far from providing medical payoffs...

Mark Pickup has a stirring column in this week's Western Catholic Reporter (Canada) about the brave actions taken against the Nazi euthanasia crimes by Bishop Clemens von Galen. You'll find it here.

Lutheran Church Ordains Lesbian Who Refuses to Take a Vow of Celibacy

"We all realized that sexual orientation has nothing to do with how well a person can minister a congregation," said Kathy Young, a church member.

That was one response quoted in this ABC News story about a Lutheran church in Chicago having ordained a 27-year old lesbian as minister...a lesbian, it should be added, who refuses to take a vow of celibacy. Jen Rude (photo at left), the woman in question, is employed by Resurrection Lutheran Church (ELCA) as a Community and Youth Outreach Minister.

The story also includes this item: An ELCA task force is near the end of an eight-year study on human sexuality, which is expected to culminate in the 2009 release of a statement that will influence church policy.

Hmmm. 8 years to find a way out of the clear and unequivocal Biblical teachings regarding sexual sin? And being paid for, of course, from the tithes of ignorant parishioners?

There are definite indications when a culture has not only entered a post-Christian period but is in desperate danger of imploding due to irrational and injurious social practices. And you couldn't have a clearer indication than the pagan pageant described in this news story.

When Will the Left Leave the Boy Scouts Alone?

Good grief. The selfish, snippy snipers of the left continue to take aim at that noblest of American institutions, the Boy Scouts.

It is really outrageous behavior...but there's no doubt that the country will face yet more of this kind of cultural deconstruction if the Democrats take yet more political power in the next elections.

David Limbaugh's column gives you the details.
