Uh, How's That "Fundamental Transformation" of America Thing Going?

There certainly is no question that Barack Obama wants to change the United States. And there clearly is no doubt that such fundamental transformation is difficult, given our tripartite system of government — even though Obama entered office with large Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress, an enthralled media, and a closely divided Supreme Court.

So to what degree, after nearly five years in office, has Obama succeeded in changing the United States?

Transnationalists Have a Wonderful Plan for Your Life (And They Will Make Sure You Follow It!)

If you thought the very idea of a sovereign republic (not to mention, your personal freedom) was under attack by judges, Nanny State bureaucrats, and United Nations busybodies, I hate to tell you this but...you're right. 

Globalism is passionately alive. And aided most willingly by the Obama administration, this transnational movement is growing by leaps and bounds.

Below are several excerpts from an alarming article published in the Wall Street Journal over the weekend, "American Sovereignty and Its Enemies." Written by Sohrab Ahmari, the article depends heavily on an interview with former Senator and veteran conservative, John Kyl. It is an article that deserves careful reading.

Proponents call this movement "legal transnationalism," and as Mr. Kyl writes in a recent Foreign Affairs magazine article (co-authored with Douglas Feith and John Fonte of the Hudson Institute), "the idea that a U.N. official can sit in judgment of the U.S." is one of its main innovations. Transnationalists want to rewrite the laws of war, do away with the death penalty, restrict gun rights and much more—all without having to win popular majorities or heed American constitutional limits. And these advocates are making major strides under an Obama administration that is itself a hotbed of transnational legal thinking.

"Transnationalists are a group of people who are convinced they are right about important issues," Mr. Kyl says as we sit down for a chat at the plush Washington office of the law firm Covington & Burling, where the 71-year-old Arizona Republican has served as an adviser since leaving the Senate in January. "But they are in too much of a hurry to mess with the difficulties of representative government to get their agenda adopted into law—or they know they can't win democratically. So they look for a way around representative government."…

Take Cedaw. If the Senate ever ratifies this piece of "1970s feminism preserved in diplomatic amber," as one commentator described the treaty, the U.S. would become subject to oversight by a Geneva-based committee that requires signatory states to, among other things, "achieve a balance between men and women holding publicly elected positions"; "ensure that media respect women and promote respect for women"; and "modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of . . . stereotyped roles for men and women….

To be clear, transnationalism isn't a conspiratorial enterprise. In the legal academy, its advocates have openly stated their aims and means. "International law now seeks to influence political outcomes within sovereign States," Anne-Marie Slaughter, then dean of Princeton's public-affairs school, wrote in an influential 2007 essay. International law, she went on, must expand to include "domestic choices previously left to the determination of national political processes" and be able to "alter domestic politics."

The preferred entry point for importing foreign norms into American law is the U.S. court system. The Yale Law School scholar Howard Koh, a transnationalist advocate, has written that "domestic courts must play a key role in coordinating U.S. domestic constitutional rules with rules of foreign and international law." Over the past two decades, activist judges have increasingly cited "evolving" international standards to overturn state laws, and Mr. Koh has suggested that foreign norms can be "downloaded" into American law in this manner…

…President Obama has given them [transnationalists] an opening to shape U.S. policy. Ms. Slaughter and Mr. Koh held top posts at the State Department during Mr. Obama's first term, and their tenures coincided with an aggressive push to ratify or recognize as customary law Cedaw and a host of other progressive causes.

For proof that the transnationalist threat isn't merely theoretical, look no further than the European Union. Says Mr. Kyl: "What they have now is a situation where their sovereignty has largely been supplanted by others who are not accountable to voters in individual European countries."

It was in Europe where these ideas were first implemented, and it is to the EU that transnationalists look as a model. Today over half of the regulations that affect Europeans' lives are made by administrators in Brussels, not by national legislatures.

These regulations include the EU's ban, announced in May, on restaurants serving olive oil in traditional glass jugs or terracotta bowls (to protect the "image" of olive oil); the prohibition against insurers charging women drivers lower premiums (sexism); and Commission Regulation 2257/94, otherwise known as the "bendy banana" law, which until recently required farmers to discard irregularly shaped bananas (don't ask).

American transnationalists look with admiration on Europe. "Once those laws are passed, EU institutions . . . look over national shoulders to ensure that they actually do what they commit to do," Ms. Slaughter has written. "This European way of law is precisely the role that we postulate for international law generally around the world."

Mr. Kyl is less sanguine. "When your society is regulated to that extent by someone who has no accountability to voters, something is very, very wrong," he says. "The transnationalists should be the last ones lecturing anybody about what ought to be because what is is the U.S. Constitution, which recognizes sovereignty in the American people. That is embedded in everything about our country. It's not outmoded—it's who we are. And if you're not willing to accept that, then you haven't signed on to the most basic notion of what it is to believe about our country."

Judging Zimmerman (Do Facts Matter At All Anymore?)

Has there ever been a clearer case of race baiting, irresponsible journalism, and a calculated strategy for social division than what we have seen with the news and commentary on the George Zimmerman trial?

Well, the trial is finally over and despite outlandish behavior by the prosecuting attorneys, enabling help to the prosecution by the judge, and the surrounding media circus that deliberately ignored the facts of the case in their zeal to have George Zimmerman burned, the defendant was cleared of all charges.

Following the verdict, there have been violent and destructive riots, arson, preachers "honoring" Trayvon Martin by preaching in hoodies, and death threats to Zimmerman, members of the jury and policemen. President Obama, as usual, has ignored the facts of the case and delivered comments which further divide the nation, encourage the protests, and push one of his pet projects, the counter-productive fiasco of government gun control.

Is there no shame left in America? No desire for a rational, unbiased examination of facts before making sweeping judgments -- judgments that are so bold as to include another's mind and motivations?

Say goodnight, Gracie.

NEA Spokesperson Channels, Alinsky, Obama...and Dante

Lily Eskelsen Garcia, the Vice-President of the NEA, an organization widely known for its antagonism to Christianity, nevertheless makes her claim to divine revelation on matters of eternal judgment.

Of the NRA and others who promote the 2nd Amendment, Ms. Garcia flatly decrees, "I'm not an ordained minister, I'm not a theologian, but these guys are going to hell.”

The comment was made at the annual Netroots Nation conference last week.

Ms. Garcia's foreknowledge was not the only religious element in her speech. She also managed to channel the spirits of both Saul Alinsky and Barack Obama.

"We have to make those senators as frightened of us as they are of the gun lobby. Shame on us if we give one inch to the gun lobby. They got where they are because they never give up. Now the movement is us; we are the ones we were waiting for.”

Mr. President, Tyranny Has Already Come Round the Corner

Tony Perkins, the President of the Family Research Council, has a nifty op/ed published over at Fox News entitled "With the IRS it's now your money and your life." Here's a few of the choicest bits.

President Obama’s communications czar, Dan Pfeiffer, usually chooses his words carefully. So it’s no accident when he says, “The law is irrelevant” even as he concedes that the IRS targeting scandal is “inexcusable.” The law provides more than verbal knuckle wrapping for those who violate a sacred public trust, but Mr. Pfeiffer wants us to know the law is irrelevant here.

The law must be irrelevant if the official in charge of target selection – Sarah Hall Ingram – not only has not been disciplined, but has in fact been rewarded. She was rewarded first with $103,390 in bonuses for exemplary performance.

But more than that, she has been rewarded with a major promotion. She will no longer oversee who does and who does not get their requests for tax-exempt status granted. Instead, she will oversee the entire operation of the new Affordable Care Act, commonly known as ObamaCare…

Applicants seeking to register with IRS were required to divulge what they read, whom they hired, what they talk about, even what they pray about. One pro-life group was instructed to abstain from protesting the abortions performed by Planned Parenthood. In short, they had to agree to give up their constitutional right to petition for redress of grievances as a condition for exemption from taxes. As the editors of the Associated Press are learning, under this administration, First Amendment freedoms of religion, press, assembly, and petition are all at risk…

A year ago, no one but “right-wing fearmongers” were worried about misuse of the IRS. TV comedian Jon Stewart dismissed such folks as the “tinfoil behatted” critics of enlightened government.

President Obama himself urged Ohio State graduates earlier this month to reject those who warn “that tyranny is always around the next corner.” Hardly had we turned the corner from the president’s speech than the IRS, Benghazi, and AP wiretap scandals burst into full bloom.

Tyranny is not around the corner. It is here. Not in an overt takeover, but in myriad small steps...

'We appreciate the governor’s invitation to place atheist books in the cabins and look forward to providing visitors with the opportunity to learn more about atheism when they visit Georgia’s beautiful state parks,' said Managing Director Amanda Knief."

* The federal government seizing records of reporter's offices. Seizing records of reporters' personal phones.  Seizing records of the phones of reporter's parents. Good grief...where will it end?

More Intimidation from Eric Holder's DOJ

The Department of Justice (DOJ) Inspector General published a new report Monday that confirms former U.S. Attorney for Arizona Dennis Burke leaked a document intended to smear Operation Fast and Furious scandal whistleblower John Dodson...

In addition to Burke’s involvement in leaking the document, emails the IG uncovered show senior officials at the Department of Justice discussed smearing Dodson.

One of those was Tracy Schmaler, the Director of the Department’s Office of Public Affairs, who resigned her position at the DOJ after emails uncovered through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request showed that she worked with leftwing advocacy group Media Matters for America to smear whistleblowers and members of Congress and the media who sought to investigate DOJ scandals under Attorney General Eric Holder.

The Leftist Politics of Intimidation: One Family's Story

Good grief, what kind of country have we become?

You decide you're going to work to make your country a better place by helping insure elections are fair and aboveboard. It's not only a legal cause, it's a quite noble one and you do everything right.

What happens?

You end up hassled, intimidated, and mercilessly vilified by the IRS, OSHA, the FBI, the ATF, and leftist politicians. Oh yes, on top of all this, petty bureaucrats cite trumped up wrongs and lay down heavy fines on your family business.

Welcome to Barack Obama's progressive America.

Catherine Engelbrecht’s tale has all the markings of a classic conspiracy theory: She says she thinks that because of her peaceful political activity, she and her family was targeted for scrutiny by hostile federal agencies.

Yet as news emerges that the Internal Revenue Service wielded its power to obstruct conservative groups, Catherine’s story becomes credible — and chilling. It also raises questions about whether other federal agencies have used their executive powers to target those deemed political enemies…

"True Scandal" by Jillian Kay Melchior over at National Review is truly not to be missed. Indeed, I'd suggest you pass it along with due diligence.

The Nanny State's Unending Quest for Power

To liberal politicians, the overarching passion is not to protect the safety
and Constitutional rights of the citizen nor is it to promote their general welfare. No, the overarching goal of liberal politicians is simply to establish dominion over the citizens, to create a Nanny State in which the collective smothers individual freedom, initiative and responsibility.

The trick, of course, is to persuade citizens to surrender their rights (and even religious convictions) to the government. Fears are heavily played upon. Big lies are told. Tasty carrots are offered.

But, in the end, liberal politicians know that force must be applied. Elections are bought and rigged.  Unelected judges dismiss existing law, justice and the will of the majority in order to create completely new (yet forever binding) rules. Government clerks invade every area of the citizens' life. The taxman takes, takes and takes some more.

And, if necessary, punishment will be dealt to those who yet refuse to bow the knee.

It's happened before in other countries with violent, heartbreaking, disastrous results.

And it's now happening again...here.

First, Destroy the Language...

Imagine if, during the campaign of 2008, someone had written the following: “If Barack Obama is elected president, then each year from now on the federal budget will be a trillion dollars in the red. He will pile up in two terms more debt than all previous presidents combined. Interest rates will stay at near zero; 7.6 percent unemployment will be proof of progress in creating jobs. Record use of food stamps, unemployment, and disability insurance will be hallmarks of recovery."

"[Also], the government will take over health care, and the costs will skyrocket. During Obama’s second term, ammunition will vanish from America’s store shelves in panic buying. Gay marriage will become uncontroversial. Women will be eligible for infantry combat. The only question about amnesty for illegal aliens will be when, not if, it is enacted. States will begin legalizing marijuana.” 

Obviously, such a conspiracist would have been dismissed as an unhinged nut.

You may object that Obama himself has hardly been responsible for all these radical transformations. True, but he helped to create, in brilliant fashion, a “hope and change,” quasi-revolutionary climate — the political cover, if you will, for the media, the universities, federal judges, state legislatures, and Congress to reinvent American popular culture and tradition in a manner rarely if ever seen in the past.

How, then, did the Obama team do that?

First were the necessary changes in language. In the Obama age, as in Orwell’s 1984, the natural meanings of words had to change...

Yes, the Crooks Are In Your Neighborhood -- Practical Pointers from the Police

Don't be naive and don't be an easy target. Crime isn't something that just happens to somebody else.

Here's some very important advice from the Omaha Police Department.

The weather is getting nicer (hopefully) and more people are present and out in your neighborhoods. Burglars may be going door to door looking for houses to burglarize. They may say they are looking for their pet, directions or they may ask for someone that doesn’t live at your address. Both of those instances would be considered suspicious and warrant a call to 911. A police officer can come out and check to see if they are up to no good.

Here is some information from a burglar’s perspective. This is not meant to frighten anyone but meant to educate. Please feel free to share.

13 THINGS YOUR BURGLAR WON'T TELL YOU:

1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.

2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.

3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste ... and taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have.

4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it.

5. If it snows while you're out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.

6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don't let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it's set. That makes it too easy.

7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom-and your jewelry. It's not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.

8. It's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door-understandable. But understand this: I don't take a day off because of bad weather.

9. I always knock first. If you answer, I'll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don't take me up on it.)

10. Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.

11. Helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.

12. You're right: I won't have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me.

13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you're reluctant to leave your TV on while you're out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at faketv.com.)

8 MORE THINGS A BURGLAR WON'T TELL YOU

1. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.

2. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.

3. I'll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he'll stop what he's doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn't hear it again, he'll just go back to what he was doing. It's human nature.

4. I'm not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?

5. I love looking in your windows. I'm looking for signs that you're home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I'd like. I'll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.

6. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It's easier than you think to look up your address.

7. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it's an invitation.

8. If you don't answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in.
