The Top 5 Plus (June 6)

1) “The merciless mistreatment of Henry Nowak: The harrowing footage of Henry’s dying moments is a searing indictment of our bigoted, unfeeling state.” (Brendan O’Neill, spiked!)

From the article -- For me, the most chilling thing in the bodycam footage of Henry Nowak’s last moments of life is the cops’ cruel presumption that he is lying. As he writhes in terror and agony and cries out ‘I’ve been stabbed!’, a voice in the background – presumably that of the lowlife who murdered him, Vickrum Digwa – says: ‘He hasn’t been stabbed.’ A female officer responds. ‘I know’, she says. ‘But we have to check, don’t we?’

I know. It is delivered with dry, bureaucratic indifference. Henry is heard moaning, begging, ‘I can’t breathe’, yet here is a representative of the state seeming to agree with his knife-wielding tormentor that he is making it up. That cold, cavalier utterance – I know – will have cemented dying Henry’s great dread: that the police were taking the side of his killer rather than him. As his young, precious life came to an end, he heard himself being disbelieved, distrusted, icily written off as a fabulist. His murderer, meanwhile, was afforded respect. The state blindly bowed to his filthy lies.

The bodycam footage of the arrest of 18-year-old Henry Nowak after he was stabbed in Southampton in December last year is horrifying beyond belief. It is one of the most harrowing two minutes of video I have ever watched. Henry can be seen sprawled in agony in a stranger’s driveway, the place he sought sanctuary after being knifed four times by Digwa. His failing voice is thick with pain and fear. What he wanted in that moment – what he needed – was to be believed. The belief of others was the only thing that might have delivered him from his terror-stricken state. But it never came. He said ‘I can’t breathe’ nine times. He said ‘I’ve been stabbed’ four times. ‘I don’t think you have, mate’, said an officer with chirpy, inhumane derision.

It is appalling. A boy’s final moments were filled with the defamatory taunts of his murderer – who falsely accused Henry of racism and assault – and the sterile contempt of the state. With the gloating of the scumbag who stole his life and the clinical disdain of police officers who should have fought for his life. What comes next in the footage is almost unwatchable. The cops drag fatally wounded Henry across the gravel of the driveway. They force his hands behind his back to cuff him. ‘I can’t breathe’, he cries one more time. ‘Put the hand in the cuff, mate’, says an officer as if he were talking to a dog. Seldom has the monstrous indifference of the state apparatus been on such stark display.

Henry was not believed until his life had faded away.

2) “Can California Still Be Saved? California’s decline is no mystery: decades of one-party rule have turned America’s golden state into a warning about the costs of ideological governance.” (Victor Davis Hanson, American Greatness)

From the article -- The recent California gubernatorial and Los Angeles mayoral elections—where, remarkably, Steve Hilton and Spencer Pratt both appear to have advanced to the general election in November—offer a glimmer of hope.

Could it be that some on the Left, along with a number of Independents, have finally realized that neither wealth nor an upscale ZIP code can protect them from the Left’s vindictive socialist madness?...

About 12 million Californians have fled the state since Newsom began his uninterrupted three-decade political career in 1997. And it seems that the more Californians have left, the greater the yearly exodus grows, with a likely 400,000 to 500,000 leaving in 2026–27.

Mass flight from the most beautiful state in the Union is the greatest indictment of the Democrat monopoly—supermajorities in both houses of the legislature, overwhelming numbers of liberal-appointed state judges, and no statewide Republican executive officeholders.

3) “Why Medicare and Medicaid Fraud Won’t Go Away: The programs operate as open-ended entitlements, making it hard to separate outright scams from aggressive but routine billing.” (David Goldhill, City Journal)

From the article -- The Trump administration has discovered the crisis of Medicare and Medicaid fraud. In the words of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz, “the full weight of the federal government is going after healthcare fraudsters—protecting American families and patients.” Oz has estimated $100 billion in annual fraud in Medicaid alone. His agency recently shut down 800 Los Angeles-based hospices that were paid $1.4 billion for alleged sham services last year.

Unfortunately, medical-payment fraud is not new. The Trump administration joins every other presidential administration since Medicare and Medicaid were created in announcing a crackdown. Congress has been equally constant: the Government Accountability Office has designated both programs as being high-risk for fraud for 23 consecutive years.

No matter how successful Oz proves at catching fraudsters, he will discover what his predecessors learned: Medicare and Medicaid fraud don’t disappear. Instead, they shift—to a new billing code, specialty, or geography—and resume at roughly the same scale. That’s because there is a fundamental flaw in the programs’ design: fraud is not meaningfully distinct from ordinary billing. The fraud, in other words, is baked in.

That flaw is clearest in Medicare, which attempts something that no other major health system in the world tries: it promises to pay for essentially all health care that a senior needs—an open-ended guarantee with no defined limit. And it does so through an entitlement rather than a budget: spending is determined entirely by the volume of claims submitted and approved. There is no annual appropriation that constrains spending once exhausted, and no administrator empowered to say enough.

4) “The Death Spiral: How the West severed women from life, continuity, and civilization.” (Spyridon Andrews, American Greatness)

From the article -- And so, if you want to look at the cause for what ails Western civilization, look no further than the demonic spiral in which we now find ourselves. We wonder why we are living in a culture now that celebrates sterility, fragmentation, the rejection of inherited meaning, and hostility toward family and especially motherhood. We live in a world where modern feminism celebrates not life, but death and darkness. It celebrates the dissolution of the family, the negation of life through their dark sacrament of ending the life of a child, and treats the dissolution of the marital union as a triumph of female personhood. Modern feminism preaches that women become women through the negation of life, through denial of empathy, and through rage rather than rational and pacific strength.

Women become women today through negating their primal spirit and can only achieve fulfillment through imitating a gross caricature of the male. But, for men who want to be true heroes, only cartoonish dimwits act like a “boss babe.” Men who are small-minded and selfish have never been celebrated. Homer taught us that Achilles’s petulance not only diminished him, but his childish behavior also brought ruin on the Greeks and his friend Patroclus. Odysseus, the hero of the Odyssey, does not behave like a selfish buffoon. In fact, he forsakes living alone on an island with a goddess madly in love with him to take a perilous journey to reunite with Penelope. Buddha, Jesus, and Gandhi are all heroes not because they maximize their pleasure, but because of the otherworldly nature of their sacrifice. Men do not admire self-obsession; they admire sacrifice—even if it costs the hero his life. This is what men, deep down, are called to do: preserve and protect. Failing at this makes us less of a man.

So why must we suffer the feminist illusion that the ideal female acts like a wholly insufferable male—selfish, loud, rude, overly ambitious, and completely consumed with themselves? How is the negation of life, the negation of our inheritance, the negation of transcendence, and the negation of the future of the species somehow tied up with the ideal heroine? How is abortion a moral sacrament of autonomy—as if unlimited autonomy is even a laudable goal for either the man or the woman? On what planet is it that the ideal male walks out on his wife and children to pursue his selfish desires? What man, deep down, believes that this is a noble pursuit?

5) “Welcome To The New Post-Christian, Islamicized France” (Erick Stakelbeck, Harbinger’s Daily)

From the article -- Paris is burning. Over the weekend, one of the great cities of Western civilization was overrun by thousands of rioters who used a victory by a French soccer team as an excuse to wreak havoc. They burned cars, attacked police, and looted businesses. At least one person was killed, and over 200 more were injured. The flames even reached the base of the Eiffel Tower.

If the scenes online shock you, they really shouldn’t. It’s the very predictable outcome of cultural suicide. Over the past few decades, Europe has let in millions of mostly Muslim migrants who have transformed cities and towns across the continent. In France, Muslims now make up some 10% of the total population. In many cases, these French Muslims do not assimilate. Instead, they self-segregate, building mosques and forming Muslim-only neighborhoods where even French police hesitate to go.

What we saw in Paris over the weekend was much more than just some bad behavior over a soccer game. There’s a larger strategy at work here. “We have managed to take over Paris even faster than the German Army in 1940,” one muslim protester stated. “It took us just three hours!”

Have they conquered Paris? Maybe not quite yet, but that’s certainly the goal. This is a jihad against France.
